SUNRISE SUNSET (FIDDLER ON THE ROOF)

SUNRISE SUNSET (FIDDLER ON ... Lyrics & Chords

This lovely song “sunrise, sunset” is from the Musical “Fiddler on the Roof”, a film of great beauty (1971) which depicts the tribulations and pleasures in a Jewish family in the Tsarist Russia of 1905. Topol plays a remarkable role with great panache as the father of five girls. I do not have a count of the number of times I have seen this extraordinary movie. It was also very successful as a Broadway Play.

The “Fiddler” is used as a metaphor for someone who manages to survive bad times with good spirits. This title was conceived from a painting by Marc Chagall titled “The Fiddler”.

Music by Jerry Bock and lyrics by Sheldon Harnick.

Is this the little girl I carried?
Is this the little boy at play?
I don’t remember growing older
When – did – they?
When did she get to be a beauty?
When did he grow to be so tall?
Wasn’t it yesterday when they – were – small?
Sunrise, sunset, Sunrise, sunset
Swiftly flow the days
Seedlings turn overnight to sunflowers
Blossoming even as we gaze
Sunrise, sunset, Sunrise, sunset
Swiftly fly the years
One season following another
Laden with happiness and tears
