SARAH (IN FRENCH-SERGE REGGIANI VERSION)

SARAH (IN FRENCH-SERGE REGG... Lyrics & Chords

ORIGINAL SINGER: SERGE REGGIANI

One of the most beautiful songs in French that I have heard is this song called “Sarah” sung by Serge Reggiani. Serge Reggiani is known as one of France’s greatest singers, and naturally I have had his album and this song became part of my memory.

I have managed to find a karaoke version of this song (monlolo31 in YouTube).

Here is my rendition.

LYRICS AND MEANINGS:

La femme qui est dans mon lit The lady on my bed
N’a plus vingt ans depuis longtemps not older than 20 years for a long time
Les yeux cernes with narrowed eyes
Par les annes due to the years
Par les amours due to her lovers
Au jour le jour From day to day
La bouche use her lips used up
Par les baisers by the kisses
Trop souvent, mais repeatedly given
Trop mal donnes badly, clumsily
Le teint blafard The face is pale
Malgre le fard despite make up
Plus ple qu’une paler than
Tache de lune the moon

La femme qui est dans mon lit The lady on my bed
N’a plus 20 ans depuis longtemps not much older than 20 years
Les seins si lourds Her heavy breasts
De trop d’amour thanks to too much love
Ne portent pas don’t carry
Le nom d’appats the name of (men)
Le corps lasse The body is afflicted
Trop caresse due to too much caressment
Trop souvent, mais too often, but
Trop mal aime badly loved
Le dos voute The back is bent
Semble porter seeming to carry
Des souvenirs the souvenirs
Qu’elle a du fuir that she was obliged to escape.

La femme qui est dans mon lit The lady on my bed is
N’a plus 20 ans depuis longtemps not much older than 20 years
Ne riez pas don’t you laugh, man
N’y touchez pas
Gardez vos larmes Keep up your tears
Et vos sarcasmes and your sarcasm
Lorsque la nuit because when the night
Nous reunit unites us
Son corps, ses mains her body, her hands
S’offrent aux miens mix with mine
Et c’est son coeur And it is her heart
Couvert de pleurs filled with tears
Et de blessures and with injuries
Qui me rassure that gives me solace.

Serge Reggiani was born in Sergio, Italy in 1922 and later on migrated to France.
He used to read out poetry in his deep and impressive voice to poetry lovers, and became popular among the great French poets in Paris. He got acting roles in films and much more than that he became popular for his singing. He passed away in 2004.

The lyrics for this song were written by Georges Moustaki, another famous French singer, of Greek origin.

This song number is one of the all-time greats in France. It is so moving, portraying the plight of a young lady, that the singer Serge Reggiani, sheds tears as he performs live, and you may see that in the song-video at this site:

The video has a short prelude of recitation of a poetic piece wriiten by the poet Baudelaire.

Hi Ariane,
Many thanks indeed!
I have changed it to “not older than 20 years for a longtime”! Is that right or not? It implies that women remain 20 for long and suppress their age. Is that right? What is the real meaning of “Is no more 20 since very long time”?
Merci d’avance!

" Not older than 20 years" ist false! The text means this woman is since a long time to more 20 years old = is (a bit or very )old.
