What a song of ethereal beauty this one is, as sung by Lataji, from the movie ANARKALI (1953)! It has enraptured me over 50 years with its ineffable musical fragrance that has ingredients of every romantic aspect such as love, fearlessness, helplessness, forbearance, pathos, tragedy etc. Hearing of the Lata-song itself is like an amrit-varsha and looking at the lovely Bina Rai sends you pitiful shivers for her tragic situation. I would rate this song as one of the best of Lataji’s. Its music by C.Ramachanda is simply out of the world. Lyrics were by Hasrat Jaipuri.

This song and music is tailor-made for a female singer and I am sorry to have taken away much of its beauty thanks to my voice!

Prince Saleem (later called Jehangir) fell in love with the beautiful maid and court dancer Anarkali (pomegranate blossom) when she performed mujra in daddy Akbar’s Court. Their love also blossomed. Anarkali was a mere commoner and Akbar would not grant Saleem his wish to marry her. Many things happened and eventually Akbar ordered Anarkali’s death by live-burial with walls built around her. Such a tragic royal story has few parallels. Akbar was a generous emperor but he showed extreme meanness in killing a lovely young woman. All this took place in Lahore.

Many experts have challenged the veracity of the story. There are variations to the story too.

This was an old recording and sorry for the noise and distortion! Your constructive criticism is always welcome for otherwise there is no way to improve!
So, what I have done is to resing the song and I did that an hour ago and have uploaded the new version here! I think that it is a much more clear version in terms of sound quality!
