AUTUMN LEAVES

AUTUMN LEAVES Lyrics & Chords

I was used to this song “Autumn Leaves” hundreds and hundreds of times in the 1970s. It has a slow romantic allure.
LYRICS:
The falling leaves drift by my window
The autumn leaves of red and gold
I see your lips, the summer kisses
The sunburned hands I used to hold

Since you went away the days grow long
And soon I’ll hear old winter’s song
But I miss you most of all, my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall

Originally this tune was French and the French song was known as “Les Feuilles Mortes” (which means The Dead Leaves). The famous French poet Jacques Prévert wrote the lyrics and the music was given by Joseph Cosma in 1945. Yves Montand sang this in a French film in 1946. The American songwriter Johnny Mercer (of the “Moon River” fame) wrote the English lyrics in 1947. The famous Edith Piaf sang the French and English versions over the radio in 1950. It is available on the YouTube.

In the first part of my singing, words get equal time and space and the English was more chaste. In the second part of my singing, I have given more time to the last word of each line and the pronunciation is almost American!

“Autumn Leaves” has been sung by many singing stars such as Nat King Cole, Barbra Streisand, Andy Williams and others (all accessible on YouTube).
