Vidya – you sounded very diff and bold , which was apt for the song. Sangathis sounded very effortless. If i were to pick something that could have been better, it was the way you sang the first line Oru Murai…sounded a bit jerky to me.

Pradip – excellent singing. Liked yours better than the original…superb feel.

Very good energetic singing Vidya … a side hitherto not heard by me … was awesome!. Your voice could have been more prominent in the mix I felt as the words were not all that clear in places like 2:58. Very excellent massive effort by you!. I haven’t watched the movie or heard this song, but I assume this is the equivalent of Ra ra. So you’ve done this in all there languages: ra ra, mere dholna and now this :) And a great job each time!
Had the much required “azhuththam”. Not to mention note precision! Enjoyed a lot!!
Pradipji: beautiful as well!! But the ma pa sa ni dha parts sound like it should rather be ri ga pa ma ga?? Isn’t this senjuruti? May be its again a problem with my shruthi perception. Or may be something to do with madhyama shruthi….- what I took as sa seems to be your ma!

Nice rendition, and the part where you come in with oru murai when Pradip starts is very well done specifically.

However, that being said, felt your emotions a little forced at some places. Unsure why I feel that, but my 2c’s :-) Thought a little more free flow with the same azhutham in sangathis would have been way way better. Nonetheless, absolutely not an easy number to attempt. So my salutes to you for that bows

Pradipji, thanks for the clarification. Then according to madhyama sruthi, the swaras seem to be misplaced…. Looks like it should rather be ri ga pa ma ga ppp sss ggg ppS- pl correct me if I’m wrong.
The swaras used in the song seem to be according to the normal sruthi and not madhyamam.

Great attempt Srividya. Great energy through out the song. Felt atleast one of the paarthayas seemed a tad off in the beginning. Just a nitpick in an otherwise excellent rendition.

Sindhuja, start your Tanpura on the scale “C”. You will hear the notes “pa, sa, sa, sa”. Now sing the part after thom to thom. The notes will be “sa,ri pa,ma,ga,ri,sa”.Our song is in “kunthalavarali”
Aro: sa ma1 pa da1 ni1 da1 Sa
Ava: Sa ni1 da1 pa ma1 sa
which gives importance to the ma1 or “madhyamam”. Now change the note pa to ma on your Tanpura to make it madhyamam. Now you naturally will increase your shruthi and sing the song in madhyamam (as it is now). But still since the base shruthi is the old one the sa,pa,sa remain as before.The “ma” is the same. That’s why though it is sung in madhyamam, the swaras belong to the scale taken in the shadjam.

Vidya has managed to sing a song with the “original” singer ! And that I think is a first here in audio blogs (if you discount some other performances which have karaoke tracks coming with the original singer’s voice in it).

Given you are not comfortable with Tamil, it was a hard song to pass and you have done reasonably well. Keep it up ! Pradip’s portions need no elaboration. They are just dot on. And what less to expect anyway ?

Liked your “ORRRRu Murrrrai” a lot! :). Felt that some of the sangathis weren’t freeflowing (eg.nee, unaitheda, kaathal noyaaga). Agree with Meera on the “forced emotions”.

But it is so easy for me to sit here and write all this……almost everyone in Muziboo by this time knows how difficult it must be to cover this song. Maybe some day, I have to try it too LOL!!!!
