Happy New Year friends!
After a harrowing week of snowstorms, a family full of sicknesses, I thought of sharing an iPod recording on one of my favorite bhajans – Thumak Chalat Ramachandra.
This bhajan, originally written by Saint Tulsidas, describes Lord Rama’s antics as a baby. The popular tune is based on raag Jaijaiwanti (some commonalities with Carnatic Dwijavanti).
Here is a humble single take of mine – an iPod recording… I sing this regularly at many occasions locally.

Baby Ram walks, swaying unsteadily
Baby Ram…. His anklets ring in tune with his steps
किलकि किलकि उठत धाय गिरत भूमि लटपटाय .
धाय मात गोद लेत दशरथ की रनियां …
Laughing joyously he stumbles around on the ground
He is fondly picked into the laps of King Dasharath’s queens
Baby Ram walks…

अंचल रज अंग झारि विविध भांति सो दुलारि .
तन मन धन वारि वारि कहत मृदु बचनियां …
They cover him with saris, dusting the dirt off and caressing his bruises
They offer loving and reassuring words of devotion to make him feel better
तुलसीदास अति आनंद देख के मुखारविंद .
रघुवर छबि के समान रघुवर छबि बनियां …

I have listened to many versions of this bhajan – Lataji, Chandrakantha Courtney, Kala Ramnath and TN. Rajam’s violin version too, and mostly have adapted Chandrakantha’s version, but I just sang in my own style.

@Kitcha – my recording system is misbehaving – time for an overhaul/upgrade, so went back to my classic iPod recording ways…the tanpura was also on, so its just one file with both my voice and the tanpura in it… Wasn’t sure how to mix it.
