Sapnon se Bhare Naina - Luck by Chance (Female take)
Sapnon se Bhare Naina - Luc... Lyrics & Chords
Movie : Luck By Chance
Music Director : Shankar Ehsaan & Loy
Singer(s) : Shankar Mahadevan
Lyricists : Javed Akhtar
A completely western fusion take on classical Raag Bhairavi. Fabulous track with bass guitar chords throughout topped with Shankar Mahadevan’s brilliant bold vocals. The Pièce de résistance of course is the classic improv-style Sargams infused by Shankarji into the middle of the song, and the high notes. What an insanely amazing artiste the world has obtained in Shankar Mahadevan.
The lyrics, as always beautifully penned by Javed Akhtar, talk about the relentless pursuit of one (in this instance, a wannabe Bollywood actor) in search of their dreams. Eyes are filled with dreams, and there is many a sleepless night, but one must not give up for the sake of those awake eyes.
To quote the words of Tagore…
“I have become my own version of an optimist. If I can’t make it through one door, I’ll go through another door — or I’ll make a door. Something terrific will come no matter how dark the present.”
Coming to the composition, the tune is reasonably simple, except for a few tricky upward slides and drops. What I found challenging was the rockish beats to which it is sung – felt like a train ride from slow sleeper to a Shatabdi Express ride! And the track is pretty noisy… so please bear with that.
I listened to contestants on SRGMP and Chote Ustaad sing this, and they were awesome with their live performances…
Here is my lame and brave attempt. I have taken the liberty to add some variations with descents, harkats and also in the sargam. Hope you find it listenable. :-)
Rahul(AJ) has taken the time to clean up the k-track and make a great mix for me. Do check his version as well, for a better quality listen. Thanks so much Rahul.
As always, I appreciate all your valuable and encouraging f/bs.

Heard it on your blog yesterday and on Rahul’s page too.
What an unusual composition!
Liked this semi classical in your voice. It is a tough song, you sounded very comfortable. Second half of the song is my favorite.

SEL team rocks!!! Wonderfully sung and such a neat presentation.Loved it.It was a bold decision to take Mahadevan’s song as a Challenge and you came out with flying colors, like always.Loved it.Already clicked all the goodies :D
I liked AJ’s version better….seemed more brighter.But with your awesome vocals,anything is good.Loved it.

Thanks a lot Paras di and Sarmi.
Paras – Yes, This song is itself an unusual kind for me, a bit out of my usual zone… The beats are very odd, and as such there is no Sum/Taali/Khaali! I was comfortable singing it as I could sing open-throated and use a classical vocal voice.
Sarmi – I agree, SEL rocks. Thanks for your unflinching support dear! :-)

Sudha Ji, Out of the world singing. When I got the dry vocals for the song I just was stunned to hear them. Its a challenging and difficult composition and you just sang it like a stroll in the park:) I am sure its not that easy but you made me believe that it was:) You inspire me:) A LOT
Loved it, faved it is the least we can do to applaud your talent. Standing ovation for your bold attempt and pulling it so brilliantly.

Thanks a ton Harshan, Rahul, Sarada, Madhukarji, Neil, Tha and Latha for listening and your wonderful f/bs!
Harshan – You must have some good memories of your SIES buddy, Shankar. He never ceases to amaze us even in his live concert, when he plays around with rhythms so much. Not to mention his improv sargams and then the taal konnakols. Thanks for the preview as well.
Rahul – Thanks dear for your good words. :-)I did listen to this song endlessly for 2 days, so there was a good amount of Nainas in the house! And Thanks to you for actually making a mix out a horrible track, and even with my vocals, given my noise-prone rec gear.
Sarada – Thanks, I am a fan of your song choices and singing.
Madhukarji – Thanks. :-) I owe you a comment still.
Neil – admire you coming and listening despite unfamiliarity with the genre. Thanks.
Tha – Thanks dear friend. Appreciate you coming back for feedback, and Thank you for your earlier f.b on my deleted post as well.
Latha – Thanks dear. Yes, Rahul’s mixing really saves us!

Somehow I do like more the second part of it, difficult to say why. An extreme difficult and same time unusual composition, sounds to me like the abstract art itself. Splendid performance U have given this one.

Beautiful Sindhu Bhairavi! Loved your take on this lovely composition Sudha! Strangely, I found very tiny offnotes. Some harkats could have been better. But what a brave attempt! Loved your take! :)

Thank you so much dear friends for the listen and the encouraging comments. It was a bold attempt for me, quite an acquired taste, appreciate all those of you who could enjoy and like this attempt.
@Adina – Highly possible coz my voice opened up more after the middle parts.
@Adithi – agree, could have not done that well at places. Recording on headphones with a bass guitar drone throughout – hmm… bad for ears! I may have taken the liberty to do my own harkats at places, esp. the Pukars from the middle. Do feel free to point out improvement areas. :-)
Kala Chechi, Ananya, Anju – yes, a very different tone here, I think Rahul’s mixing also projected my vocals more boldly. He does the magic with the voice.
Anju – The original is a few 100 times better, so do give a listen to that.

Let me congratulate you first on attempting such a difficult song…. It takes a lot of courage to attempt a Shankar Mahadevan song !!

Thanks Chondryma. Yes, this was some random radical mood upload. I know, I sing this better w/o headphones. Those oddly placed notes, a bit random, for Bhairavi, does throw one off. ;-)

Good one Sudha. Nice bold song selection. Seems like the composing team wanted to came up with a fusionised song :-).
You’ve done very well. Felt the voice processing could’ve been handled a bit different. Don’t know if that’s how it sounds in the original.

Thanks Biju and Kitcha. Appreciate your candid yet warm feedbacks! :-) You bet! I have to completely agree this is a song that only grows on you with time. I have passed on the mixing f/b to Rahul as well. All of you do have to discount that unlike the original, this is not multi-track edited tracks. All I sent Rahul was one fat and dry voice file (done in exactly 3 takes) and a horribly noisy k-track. I do agree the vocal gain could be lowered, and perhaps some gradation in volume would be nice too…. but I think yeh chalta hai for just an experiment done on a whim. :-) :-)
