Raag Bihag - Brief Alaap
Raag Bihag - Brief Alaap Lyrics & Chords
Hi friends,
Thought of just uploading a small snippet of a Raag Alaap in Raag Bihag.
Bihag is a Hindustani classical raaga – It is usually assigned to the Thaat Bilaval, but if Teevra Madhyam (M’) is given more importance, Bihag seems to be more akin to Kalyan Thaat.
I am presenting just an alaap sung in scale G# (going as low as Mandra Pa) which usually preludes a Bandish in Hindustani singing.
Some noise accompanies my Sa/Pa. Please try to ignore it.
Thanks for the wonderful scribbles that poured in so many wonderful artists here. I will open this page up for your thoughts, comments, suggestions etc. This alaap is just a brief presentation and very much a work in progress. Also, let’s have a healthy discussion about Bihag or Behaag – how it is adopted in Hindustani and Carnatic.
**********************************************
Updating with a slightly more detailed Alaap….

Sudha, Very nice of you to share the details of this raag, thaat, and present the alaap. A great start of a trend I can see :-) I think it will be a great idea to have a series of alaaps like you have done – I liked the start of the alaap and the end came too soon. :) You were just getting warmed up. Upload more. Great idea.
Cheers

Thanks a lot Shreedhar, Natarajan, Sarada and Sarmi. Also Thanks Theagaraj anna, Chondryma, Harshan, Harry, Tha and Jaishree for your scribbles and fav’ing.
Friends, I have a loo…ong way to go before I get comfortable with a detailed alaap, but for the time-being and also with an impatient toddler at hand, I wanted to upload a basic alaap. Will certainly present a full bandish (20 min piece) after some tayyari, in the near future.:-)

Sudha, great idea. One of my fav raag in both Hind & Carn, and I like Carnatic Behag more for I feel it brings out the softness and romance of the ragam better – I dont know enough to explain why though. Impressive sustains and strong lower notes too, Sudha.

Thanks a lot dear friends for listening to this quick upload from me, and all your warm appreciative f/bs! I just was warming up, and would love to hear from many more of you on other aspects of this and other raagas – like alaapanais, jugalbandis etc. Would be nice to have one of you sing Carnatic Behaag and see how the application is in it. To my very limited knowledge, what I love about Carnatic Behaag is its closeness to Kalyani. The mP~G M G treatment is done with utmost sweetness.
I will certainly work on your suggestions and take this up further… :-)

Thanks again friends for checking this out.
Really appreciate so many of you listening despite being unfamiliar with this genre. :-)
@Kumar – yes, I completely agree. I could certainly embellish the alaap more. Some mP N D P usage etc. could have been added before descending to GMG. This is a work in progress. I will update this page, as some more ideas come.

thanks for uploading this didi
i got immense pleasure listening to it
Raag bihag is complex a bit coz there are several ragas which use both shudh madhyam and teevra madhyam….so one had to pay special attention on pakad or else this can sound like some related ragas like….yaman kalyan or hamir
you sung it very nicely didi…. really loved it

@Swati – Bingo dear! You explained the raag’s pakad perfectly! While descending, the tendency to go to Yaman Kalyan is one sweet temptation we cannot afford! But the ~GMG phrase holds the fort.

:D i know little bit about ragas
yeah pakad or swaroop actually keeps the raga in its original orientation. this a pattern in which raga moves. like…. Pa M’a Ga Ma Ga is a sign for Rag Bihag and Ni Re Ga M’a is a sign for Yaman which keeps the both raga’s individuality.

@Kaushick – Thanks for the comment. Agree, but its hard to implement… one thing I’d say is the ‘Swar Vistaar’ and aavishkaar develops more as we progress into the actual bandish. This was only a prelude alaap to the actual Khayal which is usually 16-20 mins long.
