Dil Cheez kya hai - Umrao Jaan (1981)
Dil Cheez kya hai - Umrao J... Lyrics & Chords
My humble attempt over a k-track of a beautiful classic immortalized in none other than Ashaji’s beautiful and dulcet voice. I have sung this song back when I was in college and was a lucky winner of the music competition then.
The Umrao Jaan album was one of Khayyam Saab’s best compositions and he deservedly won the National Award that year.
Track was a bit restrictive at key points, so please bear with the obvious flaws. I have tried to do my best with what was available.
Listen to my talented fellow singer Sarada Bhagavatula’s wonderful rendition sometime.
This song is loosely based on Raag Bihag.
Please listen when you get a free moment, and drop your lovely constructive f/bs. I am catching up with all your uploads this week.
- Going to shelve this for a re-take with a fixed track. Thank you folks!
Movie : Umrao Jaan
Year : 1981
Singer : Asha Bhosle
Lyricist : Shahryar

Came running here as soon as I got the notif(which is working now, thankfully), for 2 reasons, for my undying love for this song and for my undying love for your sweet voice :))). Whats not to like about this song, eh Sudha? The drop-dead gorgeous Rekha, the beautiful voice of Ashaji and the lovely lyrics all make this song a complete package. Loved all your improvs , the harkats and the pauses.Beautiful rendition.I felt your real voice came through in this song, of all the songs Ive heard. Not surprised at all you won at the competition. Simply beautiful.

Thanks a lot Rahul (opening batsman!), Mushtaque Bhai and Priya for your quick listens and wonderful f/b.
@Priya – So true, I love this song way too much and the true joy is watching Rekha portray it so marvellously as Ashaji sings it. Yes, this is my natural voice from the start. Thanks so much for your wonderful support! :-)

This is an interesting upload Sudha….one of my most favorites among favorites. A book can written about it but I would refrain and keep myself to the following 2 paragraphs.
Sudha I think this is the best available track for this song. The producers rightly produced it a note below in B and reduced the tempo somewhat to help facilitate the singer. I have studied this song note by note and can play the entire song along-with the interludes all in one go since I had the opportunity to postmortem this track last year for my own craving to sing this song. With the exception of intro where singer need to improvise, the remaining is absolute perfect, hence you can not say that certain harkats were difficult because of the track.
Now coming to your rendition….I agree to Priya I too felt the real YOU in it. Your harkats were good too. A proper recording, editing to some degree and final mixing can make it top notch….no doubt about that. The only place where I had some KHUTKA was at the adaeiygi of “Ghaur Se” in 2nd and “Ghair Ka” in the last Antara. The two words in each need to be sung in continuity without a break to blend in with the beat. This was a very courageous attempt of your’s and deserves all the praise. I am thankful to you for bringing not just another song but a real classic and such a decent song. Fav is not enough….I will download it.

Thank you so much Naqvi Sir. I really appreciate your detailed f/b – but I don’t feel I got enough space in the track to complete the landing harkats (to be very honest) coz I was closely following the video to see kahan kahan jagah daleen hai Ashaji ne. Every time the beat changeover happens, it did have me stymied for lack of space to bring the nazuk 2nd harkat. I will analyse the 2 places you mentioned here. I can always re-visit this song. It was a challenge for me to do it over a pre-programmed tabla track. Will ping u offline for further tips. Thanks a lot Sir. :-)

Hi Sudha…. great selection of this classic of Asha ji and yes I did hear about the track where beats seemed odd to a singer…. so can understand that part. You sang it wonderfully with all those murkhis/modulation and yes on those two spots if you had merged them like GHAURuSE and GHAIRuKA…… it would sound much better but no worries as it doesn’t kill the beauty of the whole cover. Loved it in your voice…. just keep sharing like that.
Best of Luck!!!

Beautifully done, Sudha. Fantastic song, truly a classic that male and female singers equally wish to cover :) Rekha literally lights up the screen in every single song in this movie. Loved your own adaayegi that you added. Voice came out well in the mix. Enjoyed it Sudha !!! Also thanks and appreciate you mentioning about my really humble attempt of this classic :)

Sudha ji,
Lovely song you have picked…. and my hat’s off to any one who even tries to render this song. Having said that, you have done a commendable job and I can see that you have felt constrained by the track for the required harkats…… b/c I know you are quite talented to be able to deliver. I wish, you had a better track….

To Begin with,This is One of the Top notch song’s of Asha’ji in the Classical Mode…….& I too Give it a try Quite often on this One, Just love this song…….
As far As the Classical touches at Various places,You have perfectly Hit the Note’s & The Expression’s Were just Superb……Minor Bit’s Here & there Are Alway’s found….Because,We Record at Home without proper Backing of the Track & Professional Recording Materials….
Also Without Classical Base,It is just Difficult to Even Attempt this no……Excellent is a little Word for your Performance…….Just Brilliant….Would like to Hear More Often from you….

Listening to it again Sudha Ji and mesmerized again. I am a very big fan of your voice. Aisa lagtha hai kisi Guru ko sun raha hu:) Classical touches are your forte and this song is full of subtle tricky harkats and you have sailed through all of them effortlessly. Mix was very good too, track is not good but not so bad either. Enjoyed this lovely rendition. Already in my favs playlist;)

YOU are our Asha, dear Sudha, at 80% of the places, you sound just like ashaji…the track seemed constricted, some places of the track needed stretching…in spite of that you played ur magic here…i need not say that loved this…cherished every moment of listening…

Near to “In aankhon ki masti ke”, “Bheeni Bheeni Bhor Aaye” and “Akeli Hoon Main Piya Aa”, this is another fine one of Asha Bhosle.
Proffessionally done harquets and high level of expression have brought this rendition of Yours to a very class apart standard in my oppinion. I felt some “bit” issues in the track but I might be wrong as I am listening through a pretty poor audio devise. Little lower scale and the slite slower tempo than the original have given it a personal kind of charm which makes it sound “warmer”. Beautiful!
