A beginning Alaap in Raag Bageshree
A beginning Alaap in Raag B... Lyrics & Chords
A very Happy New Year to you all, my fellow melodious Muzibans!
Sharing a small alaap in the majestic stately Raag Bageshwari.
Raag Bageshree/Bageshwari is a very beautiful raag & the main beauty of this raag lies in swars म ध & नि॒. In this raag swar प is eliminated generally, but used stylistically to anchor the beauty of its Ma and Dha.
Raag Details:
Bageshri is an old and ‘big’ raga, the warmth in its tones wraps the listener in enchantment. It finds mention in the older treatises as “Vageeshwari.”
Thaat – Kafi
Jaati – Shadav- Sampoorna
Vadi Swar – M i.e म (मध्यम )
Samvadi Swar- S i.e सा (षडज)
Time – Midnight
(़ this indicates that it is a lower octave (मंद्र सप्तक)
Andolan on Komal Ga (g) and nyaas on Shuddha Ma (M)
Komal Swars : ग॒,नि॒ (g,n)
Will ensue with a medley of some wonderful songs later.
Enjoy this warm New Year Sunday in the company of all your loved ones! Here’s to the melody in each one of us!
Do feel free to pen down your insights about this raag or songs you like in this raag. My fav. light music number is “Na Bole Na Bole Re” sung by none other than Lataji, and I plan to sing it in the near future.

Thanks so much Paras di, NaqviJi, Rahul, Latha, Giri, Harshan, Jivanji, Swati, Ranjith, Ramesh, Vijay and Priya for your wonderful f/bs on this enchanting raag. :-)
@Parasdi – Thanks – yes, I love those songs too. Another one, Jao Nand ke Lala is beautiful as well, in which Lataji belts out 2 rapid fire back-to-back taans before landing back to Khali!
@Naqvi Saab – Hearing insights from a seasoned musician like you is always an honor. Thanks for the encouragement.
@Rahul – Thanks dear for the fav. Just a learner and have lots to improve. The key thing for voice stability is doing a ton of Sa practice, and one thing I’ve heard passed on from my Guru, and others is tons of Kharaj practice.
@Giri, Latha, Harshan, Swati, Ramesh – Profuse Thanks for your unflinching support always! :-)
@JivanJi- Thanks a lot. Only a beginner. Yes, listening a lot is so important, only then comes practising. Piya Bina sounds like a raag called Rageshri (derived from Khamaj thaat) and uses both Komal and Shuddha Ni (as I’ve read).
@Ranjith, Vijay – Thank you. :-)
@Priya – Thanks a lot. Welcome to the world of bliss! Tons of songs in this raaga.

Thanks Hemaji, Sheba and Biju.
@Hemaji – Bilkul sahi kaha aapne about Pa. :-) Lekin Bageshree ke kayeen prakar prastut kiye ja rahe hain… Some present it in Audav/Shadav form where Pa is outright varjit (not allowed) in aaroh/araroh, some in Audav/Sampoorna where Pa comes in vakra form during avaroh but varjit in Aaroh, and the latest modern approach I guess is Sampoorna/Sampoorna where Pa is varjit but used vakra both ways. I am following what my Guru taught me here.
Sometimes, artists used Pa and even nyas on it to bring a different dimension. Listen to the contemporary artists who are mindblowing like Kaushiki Chakrabarty, Sawani Shende and Pt. Sanjeev Abhyankar.
@Sheba – Thanks. Sharing the little that I know… :-)
@Biju – Thanks so much. Yep… that’s right.

Sudha ji,
Very informative and soothing aalaap for Raag Bageshree. Thanks….
I was thinking about “Mere Sang Gaa” from Movie “Janwar” skillfully sung by Suman Kalyanpur was based on the same Raag but upon looking it up, I learnt it’s actually based on Raag Rageshree.

Sudha, a fav rag of mine too. Enjoyed this to the core. The opening low and long sustains itself soothed me out. Couldnt help wish that this was longer :-) .My favs in this raag – saagara shayana vibho (i think an MDR comp)from among the classical pieces. Btw Jeevan se bhari teri ankhen – isnt it mostly Bhageshree. What a beautiful song! Keep giving us the classical treats, Sudha.

Thanks dear Archana! Na Bole is done… This surmandal is from my iPad – just using the iTabla app. I am not Kishori Tai’s disciple but hugely am inspired by her gayaki style and works. In fact, the biggest inspiration about her is her story when she lost her voice. :-)
