The Made
Listening to The Made is like hearing the whole of Hip Hop music in one group. Existing in the space between mainstream and underground hip-hop, their music somehow ties the tradition together while placing their own unique stamp and personality on it. In the tradition of the greatest artists, they rap the truth, straight to your face with no apologies or hesitation. They are committed to excellence above all, making them an exceptional young group on the rise.
Like many great artists in the Hip Hop world, William “Willie Rich” Browder, Joseph “Meko McAfee” Jamerson Jr., and Bryson “Bryce” Hebert were first exposed to music through their parents. Their parents were heavily influenced by music of all sorts. On any given day you could hear sounds of The Gap Band, Luther Vandross, and The Isley Brothers in the hallways of their households. Meko McAfee performed in his first talent show in the 2nd grade with some friends. Dancing and singing along to Bobby Brown’s “My Prerogative”, they came in 2nd place. At that moment he knew he wanted to be a performer! “Every since I was a boy, I knew entertainment was for me”, Meko states.
The three of them really started to develop their craft in junior high school on their friends 4 track machine. As Bryce recalls, “It would literally take hours to lay down a track, but that practice was definitely needed”. By their sophomore year in high school they started recording in a professional studio. Shortly after, they formed a rap group called “Self Made Hustlaz”. By the time they were seniors; they had performed in numerous talent shows and house parties, juneteenths, etc. In 1999 the group had finished their debut album titled “Low to High”. They began selling it out of the trunk of their cars while using grassroots promotions to create hype around the project. The album quickly became a must have within the city. “We sold over 2,000 copies independent”, Willie Rich states.
The group would follow up with projects like Willie Rich’s “The Syndrome”, Bryce’s “Bopper City”, as well as a 2nd Self Made Hustlaz album titled “Bow Down”. In 2006 at a industry party in San Francisco, their friend and bay area super producer Traxamillion introduced them to a dj who worked at Wild 94.9 (a popular bay area radio station) by the name of J. Espinosa. The group submitted their new song to him and the following Friday Self Made Hustlaz received their first airplay. The song titled “Bay Whomp”, also produced by Traxamillion, hit the airwaves and became instant success. Due to limited funds and knowledge about radio promotion, the song never was broke into major rotation and stayed in the mix show circuit. Meko states, “Bay Whomp taught me a lot about the music biz and how you better have a plan if you do get airplay. It also taught me that being a superstar isn’t as farfetched as I thought”.
Since then the group has decided to redesign itself, “We needed a fresh start”, were the words of Bryce. The group has renamed itself “The Made”. They dedicate all their time and attention into reinventing their sound with more industry standard production and thought provoking lyrics. “We are simply making marketable music”, states Willie Rich. In early 2010 they will release the self titled album “The Made”. The group’s image is very fresh and well polished to match the quality of their music. Willie Rich confirms “We couldn’t be more focused right now”.
In listening to The Made’s music, the album conveys it all. It’s there in “Gotta Make It”, “Check My Fresh” or “Oh My God” where hardcore yet witty rhymes unite with infectious beats to create something utterly mind-blowing. The Made also shows their ability to make a hit record with songs like “Futuristic and Boss Like Me”. “We want to be respected lyrically like say an underground artist; however we’re not just trying to be underground artist, we’re trying to be international icons”. “So we have songs on the album that can reach different targets”. “This album can target audiences anywhere from the Bay Area to New York to Japan to Germany”, says Meko.
The Made has been building up his fan base through playing shows and internet presence, but it’s clear that their ambition is enormous. “We want to be international superstars,” Bryce declares. “We always been a dope mc’s and now its time the world should know.” Their attention to detail is meticulous: “We scrutinize every piece of everything and we do everything professionally.” “When “The Made” album drops this winter, you’re going to know what I’m saying”.
The Made is one of those rare artists who has it all; charisma, style, talent and distinction. With the right production, it’s clear that they’re someone who doesn’t think in terms of limits, but one instead who sees everything being possible for their music and his career. Meko concludes, “We’ve being doing this for so long, a lot of ups and downs. “A lot of questioning and doubt, but knowing we about to give the people one of those memorable albums, it makes the long road we walking well worth it”.
