Maestro Ilaiyaraaja's Natham Ezhundathadi - Raga Sri Ranjani - Improvisational Swaras

Maestro Ilaiyaraaja's Natha... Lyrics & Chords

I have tried singing some variations of the opening lines – each variation is sung twice like a Carnatic composition – well shouldn’t it be, after all, it is a grand one from the Maestro in Raga Sri Ranjani?

Also, I have tried “suggesting” variations of the swara patterns for 1 bar (1/2 aavartanam) to the Maestro…I know it is like looking for the sun using a flash light. But what the heck….fantasies are free. :D

My motto is to show variations for the m d n r | – s – n | n d d m | m g g r | phrase, which leads me back to Naadham. Also, I wanted to latch onto the “m d” starting notes every time I sang the notes improvisations. I could come out with some 15 or so variations spontaneously. The thrill in such exercises is the fact that I do not know how I am going to sing it – I mean I do not consciously cram the swaram patterns up. All I know is that I have to pick up at m d notes and on the start of the bar and sing for no more than 1 bar and end at Naadham. That’s it.

Imagine, how many such variations must have crossed through the composer’s mind before the swarms were arrived at for the recording!!

Very happy to hear your rendition arunagiri. Happy to listen to your improvs. Some minute offs can be easily be corrected if u were to do a multi-step recording. Good job.

Thanks Murali.

Multi-step recording is a good idea but we live in a world where such things are possible.

But then there also are composers and artists, in this very world and in these very modern times, who do things live. I want to approach my karaoke recordings and improvs like this one, not by multi-step recordings but through practice. There in lies the challenge. People have done it in the past, they still do and therefore we should be able to do it also.

Cheers!

- Arun.

Unforgettable movie by Karthik-Priyadarshan-IR combo…. Your improvisations are delectable and feel ur throat didn’t comply with u to the fullest… May be a sore throat!!! And again you have pointed at me for not having learnt music… :-) Envy your prowess over those notes… A few off-notes intruded the flow… Nevertheless a superb attempt intriguing me to go in search of a Guru… :-) Thanks for sharing…
Thanks & Regards,

You must be kidding me. A volcano which spews lava all around in shruthi and layam is anything but dormant. :)

@ Deepesh: thanks man! Thanks for friend add.

@ Srividya: thanks a lot for stopping by.

@ Raj: your comments are always so well thought out and you spend time to post them in a manner that puts even a seasoned reviewer to shame. On the notes: I could have slowed down a bit I think. But anyway, I whinged it and as I told Murali Venkatraman also, I want to challenge myself to do it in front of the mic, pretending that I have a “real time” audience, which ofcourse is people like you.

Cheers!

I like your attitue towards one take recording and thoughts on multi-step recording. I’m also a very firm believer in that and would like to use Muziboo to improve the quality of our singing & to help us when we do the live shows. Keep up the good work!!!

Dear Arun:
Superb idea and execution. Again your imaginative trait of finding an opportunity where we didn’t see one is stunning. Various permutations that you came up with for just 4 aksharams, demonstrate that sky is limit for carnatic music and the musicians (I missed a long final flourish of one kalpana swaram spanning multiple aavartanams though, just like how you did in Vedam Nee).

With Love

@ Raja: thanks Raja for your kind comments. Live Music certainly rocks. And I hope and wish the composers of today out more “live” into their live show tours. When I watch Maestro’s “Andrum Indrum Endrum” concert, I get elevated to dizzying heights. So inspiring to watch the Maestro live!!

@ Vicky: I missed a long final flourish of one kalpana swaram spanning multiple aavartanams though, just like how you did in Vedam Nee

My description now hopefully answers your comment sufficiently, as to why I did not sing a final pattern.

Arun, enna solradunne therila. So happy to share a space with you here. Also it will be helpful if you can also mention the swarams for this ragam, I mean the arohanam and avarohanam.

True. I go with Vignesh. As always, we are fanatics in the paradigm of Carnatic :-) Nonetheless, sprinkling effort. Hope to hear niravals too :-)
