Ambalappuzhe - cover - Sumeetha and Sudhir
Ambalappuzhe - cover - Sume... Lyrics & Chords
Original Credits:
Song: Ambalapuzhe
Movie: Advaitham (1992)
Music: M.G.Radhakrishnan
Lyrics: Kaithapram
Singers: M.G.Sreekumar, K.S.Chitra
This song is like our “family song”. Let me explain: My wife, Sumeetha, likes to sing this. I like the music arrangement. My daughter, Shriya, treats this as a lullaby and falls asleep when this is played. What is it with today’s kids ? They treat romantic melodies as lullabies !! :-)
This is a song that showcases the “Edakka”, a wonderful instrument played when “Ashtapadi” (- Geetagovindam, to be precise) is sung in the temples of Kerala. Geetagovindam evokes bhakthirasa as well as romance since it is supposed to be all about love between Krishna and Radha.
This is a cover version sung by Sumeetha and me. The entire accompaniment music was arranged using “softsynths” i.e. no real instrument was played (If you are not aware of what MIDI or Softsynth is, please read my blog post,http://godsownband.blogspot.com/2009/02/all-about-old-jeans-and-guitar.html). Obviously it was extremely difficult to match the tone of the real musical instruments using software. So, a lot of approximations/simplifications were made, hopefully without sacrificing the overall feel. e.g. My Edakka softsynth, despite various trials, refused to sound like the one in the original – so I had to employ “Udukke” softsynth (a similar but smaller percussion instrument and having different playing style) along with Ganjira/Kanjeera and Ghatam to give the rhythmic accompaniment in place of Edakka. Softsynths used for all the Indian musical instruments were provided by a plugin called “Swarplug” provided by “Swarsystems” (http://www.swarsystems.com/). Similarly Veena pieces which have glides have not come out exactly like the original – using the pitchbend wheel on a keyboard is not exactly my strength, so I had to change the music a bit to suit what I can play :-)
Instruments in this cover version:
- Udukke, Ganjira/Kanjeera, Ghatam, Santur, Manjeera/Jaalara, Chimta, Veena, Sitar, Bansuri, Dholak and Mridangam on Swarsystems Swarplug
- Strings, 12-String Guitar, Bass and Electronic Percussion Kit on Cakewalk TTS-1 Synth

The accompaniment you have created is beautiful. Loved the sound of every instrument.
Sumeetha & you have a very nice voice. The main improvement area is pitching. There were lot of off-notes in the vocals which will surely improve with practice.
Do upload more songs.

Rashmi – you are very right about the off-pitch notes. Both of us will definitely try to improve. Lines that start with “Naalalariye” and “Velipennayi” parts are the most prominent. I am glad that you liked the accompaniment, it does take a lot of effort and time. If you don’t mind me asking this, can you and NVK sir add your vocals to the karaoke tracks that I have uploaded separately and make your version of this, it would be a treat for all us. I hope you don’t think that I am putting you in a spot for making a comment :-)

Sudhir – the track has come out GREAT – to be honest, many times better than what i expected since i had heard from you most of the limitations that you were facing during its making! There are quite a few good songs thats doing the rounds without karaoke (hint hint hint :) ). Singing however could have been better.
Sumeetha – i liked the alaap the best. your voice sounds nice…but a bit more of opening up and emoting would have enhanced the song. “Punyam” and “kaivalyam” sounds very nice. good job!

Sreeharshan – glad that you liked the tracks and thank you for the encouragement
Vijay – thanks for your comments – you are right about the need for more clarity in diction; will try and improve on that
Santosh – thank you for your comment
Radhika – thanks for the detailed comments – you are an insider and I think you have an unfair advantage over others in providing feedback :-) Hint taken about your struggles without karaoke tracks, let me know ONE track that you want; I can’t match up to your speed of churning out hits :-)

Tara – thank you for the kind words; have been listening to your songs – great job; long way to go for both Sumeetha and I….
Really appreciate all you guys for taking time to listen and providing the feedback.

Sudhir,
I love this song – one of my favs. Nice track. The flute bit in the second interlude is one of the highlights of the song.
This is a commendable effort. Pitching could improve but your voices are very nice to hear.
Keep the passion going.
-Kumar.

I can’t belive that you artificially created the back ground scores! It was close to originals, spcially the Edakka. Apart from the song I very much liked your introduction notes. Really funny, that your daughter falls asleep when listening to this number. My son, he is at 13 now, always wanna hear “Mustafa Mustafa” by ARR when he was only 6 months old :) This is the new generation yaar :):)
Take all the advices upstairs on singing, both of you will rock! Regards to your family, you made us feel that they are verymuch close to us!

Kumar – thank you for listening and really appreciate your comments.
Ashraf bhai – glad to know that you enjoyed the song. Your son, like me and my daughter, seems to be a die-hard ARR fan; you wouldn’t believe this: My daughter (17 months old now) starts shaking her head rhythmically as soon as she hears an ARR song. I am also glad that you are pleasantly surprised with the tonal quality of the softsynths. I too was, when I first heard the demo. Just FYI – the trend of using softsynths in commercial Indian film music is catching up. Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy have used it extensively in “Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna”. Although I feel that we need to support traditional instrumentalists, how practical is it otherwise to get a traditional “Edakka” player to accompany you or me?

Sudhir and Sumeetha,
Have heard this song just once before. I really liked the music arrangements. Could not tell the diff from original. As far as singing goes:
Sudhir – All experts have commented. I hope you you already know about it.
Sumeetha – I want to stress Radhika’s point again (since no one else did), the first thought that i had listening to your voice is “Opening Up” You have a lovely voice. Just open up and sing. It si very obvious in the song that your are not letting your voice out. Please let it go……again yu have a very very nice voice and so do you sudhir.
Hoping to hear more form you guys….
Check out my first song here
Please do comment. They help me encourage and improve.

Vamsi – Thanks for your detailed comments; glad that you liked the music arrangement. Feedback that all have pointed out regarding our vocals and singing style are very well taken; and we will strive to improve. I’ve also passed on your comments on Sumeetha’s singing style to her; “Not opening up and not singing full-throated” issue is something that we too have discussed often; she would definitely try to improve on it. We really are thrilled to have genuine and constructive feedback in this forum.

Sudhir & Sumeetha,
Nice arrangement, singing wise— guess both of you need more practice and ofcourse singing makes perfect!
I somehow missed all the classical touches in the original.
Very nice to pick and cover!

Good job.
Many parts of the song sounded a little flat since it lacked some of the carnatic melodies which were present in the original.
The transition from the last line of the stanza into “ambalapuzhe” could have been a little smoother.
Very nice song. Nice rendition….but I feel u guys can do better!
