Ilaiyaraja like attempt.......Subbu's

Ilaiyaraja like attempt....... Lyrics & Chords

After working with Bala on his 80’s feel,I got inspired to do one number with similar feel arrangements……The lyrics is being written(Find it the hardest part, taking helluva time)in the meantime as usual here is the instrumental version………
-——————————————————————-Situation :

Hero(preferably Mohan….LOL)is a musician and one evening, having been ditched by his lady love,in the morning)is strumming his guitar with his band (pl imagine Thyagarajan on Drums,Rajiv on Strings etc…….:))and they start playing a composition(the crowd starts gathering to watch them inaction) and it starts raining…….suddenly his lady love appears in the scene with an apologetic smile(Ambika!)…….looking through his eyes……suddenly then it becomes a ’kanavu scene"……!!!!

(Please imagine all men wearing bell bottoms and tight shirts with floral patterns and 3 inch belts)…….LOL
-——————————————————————-

Credits :Music and arrangement,Guitars Keys,Subbu.

Thanks Bala for his ‘legendary’ imtakum sample"(Percussion)
-——————————————————————-

I intend to make this from here on a full fledged collaboration.I think the melody lines in charanam have scope for improvement……Lyricists required and a key board player for better playing of the various instruments.

Please excuse the synthetic sounds.

Headphones Recommended.

Hey Subbu,

Heard this like 4-5 times. Here is my first impression towards this composition. Very nice tune and goes with the situation very well.

Loved the prelude part, superb arrangement there. Nalla harmonies and very smooth start and once the song takes off it picks up beautifully. Your pallavi is the highlight. I am already humming it here as i am typing.

Coming to the interlude, A very interesting choice of instruments i shud say. The string arrangement that follows the guitar piece in the interlude seems to me that there is an important situation in the middle of the song. Probably like this, Mohan completes the pallavi and the movie pans out to ambika probably travels by an auto and at the end of the interlude shows up and they get face to face. I dont know i am just guessing. The intresting choice of instruments make me think that way, dunno if you actually did it that way.

The following charanam lives up to its start. The percussion really is a highlight, ilayaraja feel sooper a kudukuthu. Very nice subbu, Are planning for another interlude and charanam ? Think it would be good to extend this.

Cheers,
Balaji S

Subbu: The write-up was quite interesting and was smiling as I was reading it! Bayangara ilayaraja, TR combination-a irukku. (thyagarajan on drums…. Rajeev on strings…LOL – that reminded me of some movie.sarita starrer?) Mike Mohan…. this song will be a super hit :)

It was good. Waiting to hear the complete version…

Very nice tune and good arrangement, Subbu. Sometime, you guys have to explain the basics of how you go about creating a tune and taking it from inception to arrangement and to completion. Mighty impressed!
The tune sounds a bit like the Dhoom score, but in staccato style…
Liked it!

Subbu,
This is amazing. Once completed, this will be your obvious best on Muziboo. The prelude is excellent – I just love it. The complex timing of the prelude reminds me of those complex thoughts of Raja in 90s like siraichalai, Veera, etc…. The pallavi tune is very very catchy. I am humming it now! Very apt bass line and rhythm guitars.

I think the following will make it tighter. Please consider these as you are in any case going to work on the next version of this:

  • In the interlude try to use some crashes, cymbals and light rolls. It will add amazing filling effect. Let our Thyagaraajan do something here!
  • Definitely need some better synth keyboard tones.
  • Interlude beginning is good. But, in the middle the string parts does not gel well. The ending is good.
  • Charanam beginning is good. The middle part from 2:04 to 2:13 needs some work. The ending is good.
  • As the prelude is so good, you can copy and past it for the second interlude. You can include some more layers to show some difference.
  • Sriram Srinivasan will be a good fit for this Mic-moham-orchestra combination.

From your write-up I see you are already aware of most of the issues I have mentioned above. I still wanted to highlight those so that you don’t miss a thing!

All the very best, Subbu!

“Limitations live only in our minds. But if we use our imaginations, our possibilities become limitless.”

Subbu anna aka sagalakala subbu!!! I am really startled by your description about this composition and of course wearing a 70mm smile. :-) A creator cannot be made and he is born. By the traditional training, he goes to the next level. And when it comes to music, no body can accomplish anything without music flowing through the veins. You are one such creator I am admiring a lot. Age is neither a restraining factor nor a constraining one. I harp these words as I had a chance to read a few words which u uttered pointing out ur age and that u had never taken any sort of training in playing any of the instruments in one of your comments. Age can harness our deeds but not our creations and dreams. You are a perfect creator and lot more concentration would shower us with the best of music. So I pray that you dont succumb to your earthly pressures. :-)

And now about this composition, I am not happy at all about ur artiste selection. Lol. You have forgotten to include Thyagu who starred in many of the movies with Rajeev playing an instrument cladded in those bell-bottoms/tight shirts/step-cut hair-style and 3-inch belt. And Thyagarajan’s inclusion is the result of creativity and dreams at the peak. :-) Mic and music shows are attributed to Mohan really. Lol. So what next?? am also a dreamer whiling away my time mostly in my own dream land where only actresses accompany me. he he he. I have tried my best to rope-in Ambika(though she should be called an aunty by me) and somehow convinced her to act. Hurray!! And Mic Mohan is a real smart guy. Happened to meet him in Hotel Greenpark at Chennai. He looks very young still. Vaazhvu thaan avarukku. Lol. Now the song is getting transcribed here below:

0:00 to 0:12 – Mohan thinks of the humiliation(a true and sincere lady love would never ditch her lover. he he he) he faced in the morning. And he is looking very gloomy. Camera shows his face from all the angles from 0:00 to 0:12 with long-shots and close-up shots

0:13 to 0:29 – Lightnings start flashing; starts drizzling; Ambica’s feet are shown treading towards an auto and the auto is shown and after a cut shot, Ambica gets off the auto and there she brings an apologetic smile on her face. Mohan acknowledges it after talking to her through his sharp eyes(though not sharp, need to accept as am the creator here. he he). Now they are ready to visit the world’s best dream land which they have hired from me for exactly 2 minutes.

0:30 to 1:13 – Though they are about to visit my dream land, the chemistry between them should come back to jesting terms from jousting terms. So he appeals her with his singing and flatters Ambica with his innocent singing.(Muziboo la yaarukku luck adikka pogutho Mohan kku paada). Now camera approaches my dream land after 1:13.

1:14 to 1:43 – Now Mohan does his hop-style running.(Dont really know how to term that run he usually does in songs. ;-)) Ambica comes from the other end. And when they approach each other so closely, the camera freezes giving us a 360 degree shot. And there, the white dressed angels swarm-in waving their hands above their heads. Mohan wears a flashing(minuminuppa irukkumey) head band over his forehead. Ambica wearing simple ornaments(Cos wives would pester their husbands to get those ornaments. So am taking pitiful husbands into consideration) looks so gorgeous.

1:44 to 2:29 – Then comes Mohan dancing with his friends around him and Ambica ………. Keep guessing. This is a teaser. So can describe the scenes only till this. Watch out the premiere shortly in Muziboo when Subbu anna pays me for the script and when he finds time. ;-)

Nice creative work. Hats off. Would love to listen to this in voice than the synthetic tone which is not invoking the mood, to be honest. And would be glad to help you if u r in need of any lyricist to pen down the lyrics and any instrument players. We can really help u if u wish. Do post ur compositions as much as u can plsssssss

Thanks & Regards,
RAJ

Hi Subbu … sorry a bit late in my contribution here … not sure if this going to really help at this stage as you may have progressed on with further improvements. However, here is what I noted and I am doing this playing, pausing and typing here … so here goes:

- Smiled at your scene introduction and the bell bottom imagination!. So when exactly does the kanavu scene cut in?!!. Time stamp please!!. If you want to make this more full fledged, please nominate your muziboo actors also and lets have a video shoot as well!!.

Now to the serious part!:

0:00-0:30 Opening – you have beat issues … what you are playing there is not conforming to a beat cycle as far as I can make out. With original compositions, I would love to hear your 1,2,3,4 to guide the music right in and then start playing. The only exception to this is an introductory piece that is a raag aalaap of some sort. In your case that opening piece must conform to a beat cycle and this is not clear.

0:30-1:13 – Pallavi tune … I like it. I would do a minor modification between 0:55-0:59 to make it sound better. Apart from this it sounds pretty good to me and very workable with suitable lyrics.

1:14-1:23 – ok

1:24-1:38 – Sounds like an odd scale change unless you are planning on having some nasty clouds gathering in the skies!. You need to seriously change this part I think as I cannot fathom it!.

Bit up to 1:45 seems like a good appeasement!.

1:45-2:02 – Charanam tune; sounds OK but pattern is very similar to the Pallavi except that it is pitching at higher notes. I would change it to make it more interesting somewhat.

2:02-2:12 – Sorry this part is out of place and I would rework this to keep it in the scale. So many other interesting notes available, and do not need this oddster here!.

2:13-2:17 – Nice appeasement here and I like it.

2:18-end – Back to pallavi and sounding good again.

That’s my 2 pence worth and hope it is useful.

~With a rhythm is born a song. From a pulsing heart is born music!.
~ Arvind ~

Subbu said

Absolutely Arvind, very nice to have you here and receive your feedback,as detailed as ever.

The opening part I deliberately left the lead notes ‘unquantized’ to give that casual scratch practice kinda feel……while the chords perfectly follow the beat cycle.I would leave it the way it is unless you strongly feel it MUST be changed!

The rest of the stuff,I agree 100%……Truth be told, played some accidentals, here and there,to give that unexpected change, typical of IR……But I agree that I messed it up……in terms of the placement of the same in the progression……I will re do those portions Arvind……Thank you.

Subbu.
