Smitha,

You are one of my favourite singers in muziboo….but for this song can you add a more punch. I felt it initially….then in middle you become more open….its a tough song ….you did well….

Smitha … evergreen hit song and good pick.
Track in my opinion was not that great. Your singing was blunt in places too and didn’t have the necessary sharp line-ending extensions that are the life blood of this song.
It was a good attempt nevertheless but on another day you could possibly do better.
Thanks for presenting a timeless classic and sorry to sound a bit damp … intention is to give you my genuine feedback. Cheers.

This is one of my favourites ….the foot print of this song ….is nothing but voice modulations and voice throw ….

Smitha, you sang this very well. I loved the anthra’s ….it had the desired effect with a lot of punch ….the mukhda could have been better ….but singing wise I didnt hear any offnotes ….these are some finer points. I guess it becomes very easy to comment on others performance ….lol

Mixing wise …. compress the ktrack …it would create a lot of energy.

5/5 from me and thanks for covering this song.

Hi Smitha,

Thanks for asking and I will point out a few areas so that you will get my drift and hopefully take them on board.

0:30 – “Dum Maro Dummm” – In the ending DuMmm the Mmmm is not prounounced well. There should be more sustain in the Mmmm. In your rendition the Aaaaa takes off without resting on Mmmm. Similarly in “Mitujaye HUmmm”, the Mmmm in the Humm is not heard. In short, your MMmmmms are blunt and hardly heard.

1:15 – “Thooo….Turuturu etc” – For more impact you should start with “Thaaaa!….and then…TuruTuru”. The entry of “Thaaa….” is more dramatic as it is a more open syllable than Thoo. That whole humming part needs a more ’don’t care attitude’ expression. For me that was lacking.

1:30 – “duniyaa ne hum KO diyaa kyaa?” – The KO there should be straight up with more vocal volume. Similarly in “duniyaa se hum Ne liyaa kyaa?” the NE should be straight up with snappy expression. These are the high points of these short lines. Without them it sounds weak and blunt. That is what I felt.

1:35 – “hum sab kee pawraa kare kyon?” – For “Kyon” you are giving a push from down to up which loses its impact. Instead “…kare Kyon” should be said in one straight flow with dramatic high note in Kyon. Please note that in Asha’s rendition.

I won’t go into other places as I think by now you would have got my drift hopefully.

These may appear to be minor things, but when you put all these together in repetition, it certainly blunts it and that is what I meant. With these kind of impact songs, the approach of notes is more often straight and dramatic rather than a sliding approach.

At the end of the day, we work with our given voices and we may have limitations. However, the approach and attitude should be seen to be present and thriving.

Hope you took this constructively. Cheers.

Hi Smitha,
Very well sung… Just that I felt the singing was too controlled, and the kick was lacking a bit… You are no doubt one of the best singers on muziboo, but I felt this particular song didn’t suit ur voice that much… Its really great that you try singing in different genres though… :) With all due respect, that’s my personal opinion, hope you wouldn’t take offence :) Cheers…!

Smitha … just felt like saying that you have more than the basics going fine, but try to work on the impact areas like mentioned above. When you open up more with a sharper attack (in these type of songs) you will sound awesome!. There is often a fighting re-birth out of all these reviews!. Your effort in this song is very much to be appreciated.

On mixing, afterall we are only mixing the track with the vocals (2 to three elements maximum!), unlike professional studio mixing which can involve even more than 100 tracks!. I think in our case, all we need to understand is comparative volume levels, some vocal compression and effects and finally having a good set of ears to make the right selections for our voices and for the song in question. With some decent hardware and software and some reading up, we should all be coming up with better sounding songs. Have to invest some time there for long-term benefit, but it is not mind blowingly difficult to address these basics. I agree it can be a bit confusing for beginners … best thing I would say is read up read up read up!.

Keep it up!.
