Firstly….thanks George for starting a discussion like this. Its nice to know the singer’s perspective :-)
Music for me started as a hobby as a child. My parents enrolled me in Carnatic vocal classes and it was just a routine for me. Never really tried to learn anything extra….in short never really paid much attention to those classes. The realization that music is much more than a hobby, actually a passion, came to me much later in life. There was this time, during my college days, when I would listen to hindi songs like crazy and I think that’s where my actual lessons started. I owe my fundamental knowledge to my music teacher but Hindi film music has been my inspiration for a long time now.
For me, music is about the notes, the harkats, the alaaps. I consider Asha and Rafi to be the ultimate icons in Hindi film music……truly worship them! I also listen to Malayalam film music. Worship Yesudas and Chitra too! Apart from that, I listen to Ghazals and other forms of semi-classical music. For some reason, I find it difficult to associate with Western music……maybe because of the style of singing….I am not sure.
Singing wise, I have a long long way to go. I think I sound good at the mid-range and I can manage the lower registers also well. Even though I can manage to hit the higher registers, my voice sounds funny :-) It loses the depth and sounds shrill and unpleasant. So am working hard to better that.
2008 has been the best year for me musically. I found my Guru who is teaching me Hindustani Classical music, and I found Muziboo, thanks to Harshan. The amount of talent here is unbelievable! I love the way people train each other and train themselves in the process. Muziboo has given me hope to better myself as a singer and I am really really thrilled to be here!

Smitha,
I admire you being so clear in your self assesment. As fas as ur singing is concerned, its always very good as u r in pitch all the time….SUR is the biggest gift to you according to me……Your low and mid-range as a singer are brilliant……some of ur renditions has taken me aback to think whether you are still learning or r u a professional singer……Even though ur voice sound a little young at high pitch, it has an endearing quality which will surely suit some songs……As George, pointed out that u can take care of that by equalization…So please work on that……Its the final end result matter and if equalization can make you sound mature at high pitches, thats cool for me and many others…….:)
Also practice KHARAJ as it will open ur voice at high notes too and will also give some more body which you want to develop….Also experiment with a lot of different genres, classical, hindi, english songs too as u will broaden ur skill rather than sticking to ur strengths…….
I really feel honored to be in a singing community where there are so many talented singers……and you are definately amongst them….Good Luck to you in all your singing endeavours…….
Regards,
AJ

Smitha you have a very distinct voice ….which has some flavour of Ashaji. There is a character to your voice, which I like immensely. Also you are a trained singer, so pitching is not an issue for the most part when you sing. Also you are one of those few singers who just go full blast when they sing the upper notes ……love that in any singer. I can see that you are improving with every post, you just need to work on the throw of your voice in the mic ….I can already see that it has improved quite considerably from your last post. With time you will become an expert with mixing ……glad to have known you and introduced you here. Keep singing with the same passion ……god bless.

Very well written Smitha. I was kinda sad to read that you find it “difficult to associate with Western music”… We will have to work on that :-)
I feel you have a uniqueness in your voice that is so very distinct that it can be a blessing and a curse at times. Your voice can give certain songs a totally different dimension that is so damn cool. The reason it can be a curse sometimes is coz it can make you sound too young in certain high pitch songs (not always though). I think you are very consistent when it comes to pitch (this is very rare on muziboo). I do agree that you sound best in your mid range, but feel you sing fine when attempting high range as well. Its just that you sound young (as a result of the lack in depth as you pointed out). There are ways to fix that though using equalization. Good luck on your musical journey! Really glad that you are part of the muziboo community.
