How to Evaluate Original Composition ?
Shashank Gokhale posted
Guys,
You can not COMPARE one creation with other becuase each has its own UNIQUENESS….But People use words like GOOD Composition and BAD Composition…. Would Like to listen to your perspective of Evaluating an Original Composition….? What is your Criteria (rather priority of Criteria) for judging Composition ?Posted on January 04, 2008

Shashank,
I haven’t gone through the whole discussions so I may be repeating few things but this is what I have to say – I personally give more importance to the tune of the song …Does it strike with the listener at the first listening itself …The simple melody that an average listener can relate to easily ….Rest of the things are important but secondary …of course the perspective will be different if I am judging an amateur vs professional musician’s composition …
At the heart of the song is the tune …If you have a good material, you can hire people for orchestration …A professional singer will lift the song to a different level altogether ….even some bad lyrics can go unnoticed ;) ….A good mixing/mastering engineer will add that “A ha” factor to it….You get the point :)
Listen to this initial draft by Narayanan Venkitu who composed this song ….
Now listen to the final version with all the orchestration, mixing etc ….This is sung by Jo and Vidyu …
Cheers,

Hi Shashank
For me Original composition first mean not other version of an existing music or song. Then Original I think also mean that bring something new and quite unique.A music with personnality that hook your interest from the first notes and keep you listen until the last note.

See first of all i guess :
1.all the basic timing, tempo, sur, evrything shud be correct.
2.then comes the most important thing the completeness and meaning of the song, like it shud be something.
3. Lastly feel ,A great song may not be technicaly very difficult or some strange augmented chords are used. What matters is how much you enjoy it and how much feel it gives to you.
So maximum points should be given to how much you enjoyed the song… rest all can be made…
