Manjal Mugame
Manjal Mugame Lyrics & Chords
In the recent days, Kizhakku Pookum (Anwar) a Malayalam song kept taking rounds in Muziboo. As I kept listening to it, got reminded of ‘Manjal Mugame’. Thanks to Kaushick – here is why – “what reminded you about Kizhakku Pookum is probably the rythm which is 7-8 ( misra chaapu) in both the songs… the raga, however, is not the same…”
I’m not sure how popular this song was at the time of its release. But I just love the tune. I didn’t find a K track so ended up making a vocal cut. It is half baked and you will notice volume flying up and down between my verses and the chorus, request you to bear with it. That’s all from Disclaimer deck :)
Something to chew around this song… okay to start with, I have always wondered why Hanuman Slokam was required in this song!? Anyone?? Moving on, Tamil films have some standard visuals for songs such as this – Vandathey from Kizhakku Vaasal, Thoodu Selvathaaradi from Singaravelan, Paatu Solli from Azhagi. The female movie watchers (fanatics) will understand what I mean – from costume (Yellow silk saree for sure!) to accessories to a tree oonjal – they are all stereotyped…. but still beautiful. Choreography in this song is especially noteworthy – and yes, I cannot be more sarcastic about it! Another weird aspect is to literally try and capture the metaphorical lyrics on screen. I think most film makers assume that general audience deserve no credit and can be graded with zero intelligence. Subtlety is beyond our scope. Here is a for-instance that amuses me – New York Nagaram song carries this lyrics – Naangu kannadi suvarkalukulle naanum meluguvarthiyum Thanimai Thanimayo – so director thought it would add value if the hero sat in a restaurant with glass windows all around with a candle in his table.GRRR :-O Not to mention that ‘New York’ nagaram song was shot in Swiss (look for its flag)… Unbelievable! Manjal Mugame has one too – lyricist did a grave mistake of writing this line – Baaram Thaanga Vandha Vizhudhey…Marathin Vaeraaii Aana Amuthey – so the heroine runs to a tree and hugs it… symbolizing ‘marathin vaeraai’ possibly!! :-((
Jokes apart, I wanted to do this song for Vasanth. I was not in the best of my times when I met him… truly god-send and a blessing in disguise. So here goes :)

Revathi,
Nice write-up and not familiar with the song. The other songs you mentioned made me to imagine the situation of this song. You have done beautifully well which is so usual from you, but the K-track was a bit noisy probably a vocal cut one.
Liked it.

One of the few best songs from Iman… Guess the music was by Iman… Welcome aboard!!! :D I mean, to the vocal-cut track users’ club… Can understand how special this song is to you… Machchi is lucky… :) Singing wise, you could avoid those tremolos which at times impair the beauty of the cover… Take care of those offs grinning here and there… Never thought this would get posted today… Surprised me indeed… 16 um petRu peru vaazhvu vaazha en vaazhthukkaL… :-)
Thanks,

Thanks Kaushick. I wanted to add a list that felt similar – Chinna Thaayaval (Thalapathy), Thoothu Selvatharadi (S.Velan) – tunewise and Neeya Pesiyadu (Thirumalai) too… now I get it… rhythm did the trick!

So sorry for getting here so late, Revs!
Immensely enjoyed your write-up! Totally agree with you, especially about the out-of-place sloka usage in the tune!
I have never heard this original and the movie. The tune was pleasant but there was something very irksome about it- not able to put a finger to it exactly. Imam is not one of my fav MDs and will find it difficult to take this tune with me beyond this post :P
Excellent singing and very good feel in it. Intha paattai itha vida sirappaa paada mudiyaathunnu nenaikkaren….you did very well :)
I was thinking that your voice will suit Sujatha songs very well if you can manage that high pitch. Please do try it out when you get a chance :)

“Raamanukaaga thoodhu pona Hanumaney en poNNukaaga nee poga maattiya”, cries the dad of the actress Sneha, a young widow, out of agony that he wanted his daughter to get remarried to the actor Shyam in the movie “ABCD”. May be that’s why “Aanjaneya Mathi Paata Laananam Kaancha Naadhri Kamaneeya Vigraham” sloka has been used in this song that follows immediately after the dad’s such dialogues…. Nevertheless, I respect the opinions registered in ur write-up…. Most of the Tamil movies revolve around some kinda sentiments and the serial killers who survive by making people cry through their back to back TV serial shows, must start thinking out of the box to relate to reality…. I too got reminded of ‘Kizhakku pookkum’ song while I heard this song, but unsure as to why, thanks to my poor music sense…. Liked ur natural expressions through out this rendition…. Nice dedication to Vasanth…. Best wishes….
