Thank You George for starting this. Wanted to start my discussion long back, but I had vry few songs in muziboo then.
So uploaded more so that people viewing this dicussion would have a fair idea about my singing. I have been trained in carnatic music for about 10 yrs
from different teachers, but was never serious about it until recent times. Also I have sung in a light music troupe for a couple of years which my cousin brother conducts.
Though it did some good of introducing me some great 80’s and old songs, I developed a bad false voice which my latest music teacher pointed out and insisted on openthroated singing.
I am very passionate about singing and have participated in plenty of competitions during school, college n TV shows too, won vry few :).
Later, I became more serious about music and have been striving hard to improve till date. Thanks to Jo for introducing me to Muziboo, I became passionate about listening and sharing wat i feel too. And of course, I get a great audience for my singing and valuable comments to improve it.

Here goes my self assessment(not able to analyze + and – separately) ,

1. Lack of breath control – which result in poor line endings either flat or off.
2. Straight forward singing/Lack of expression – I just concentrate on the song musically and dont feel the lyrics and sing
eventhough I can memorize the lyrics easily.
3. I have a fair grip on shruthi, but when singing mid range/high range, at times I tend to go sharp.
4. Lack of energy in some songs and lack of clarity of sangathis in some.
5. I concentrate a lot on diction as I have a love for my language, Still that has to be improved on Hindi. Will have this in mind when I sing in other languages too.
6. I have received comments saying my notes have to be tighter, so should improve on tat too I suppose.
7. Am yet to learn mixing. I apply the same effects which sounded decent once to every song of mine.
8. Yet to go a long way in managing time.
I have a thirst to learn semi-classical/classical based songs, old melodies and not very popular IR songs & render them.
If I like the music, I would attempt any language of course doing considearble justice to them.

I would really appreciate if you could spare some time and leave a feedback on my assessment. Thanks in advance:)

Cheers:)

Hi Ramya,
Thats a very thorough analysis and I must say its very accurate. Thanks for taking part in the exercise. I think you are a very good singer who is bound to get better as time progresses. You sing in an open throated fashion, which I love. I think your sense of pitch and timing is good for the most part. I am not an expert in languages, so cant comment on diction. I agree that expresssions can be improved. As far as mixing goes, it takes time. You should just try and read as much as you can and practice different settings to see what works best. However a good singer does not necessarily need to learn the finer details about mixing. I strongly feel that you are one of those singers who will improve leaps and bounds in the coming months/years!

Good luck!

-George

You have a very nice voice which has a lot of potential. Based on the few songs you posted recently, I think you are still getting comfortable with recording and mixing. I agree with your assessment that you have good pitching control but the imperfect notes that creep in are probably due to focus on other aspects while singing. I think you need to enjoy singing more and you will find your renditions go to a new level automatically. Your breath control will also improve because you are more relaxed.
Keep singing and posting.
-Kumar.
