Toch chandrama nabhaat - Marathi Geet by Raghu Kedar
Toch chandrama nabhaat - Ma... Lyrics & Chords
My tribute to Babuji……
Today is the 92nd birth anniversary of the late Sudhir Phadke, fondly known as Babuji in the world of music. Needless to mention that he is an iconic figure in Marathi music, having composed and sung in his magic voice for scores of Marathi movies and albums.
Babuji scaled dizzy heights with his masterly narration and singing of G.D.Madgulkar’s Geet Ramayan, which has a staggering 56 compositions, each of them a masterpiece.
Very few may be knowing that Babuji has also rendered the music for many a Hindi film (Bhabhi ki chudiyan – 1961, being one. Who can ever forget, ‘Jyoti kalash chhalake, by Lataji?) The extremely popular Kishoreda number, ‘Aaj pehli tareekh hai’ too was Babuji’s composition.
Today, I am posting a very popular geet (Sugam Sangeet) composed and sung by the master himself. The lyrics are by Shanta Shelke.
For those interested, here’s a translation of the poetry.
(you are the same moon in the sky, you are the same night of Spring)
(you are close to me in solitude, you are, my beautiful)
(you are serene just the same, like the misty moonlight)
(the shadows you form are the same as beautiful drawings)
(you are the same fragrance as a glade of jasmines)
(you are close to me in solitude, you are, my beautiful)
(everything is same, but where are those heady days?)
(you are same, I’m same, but where is that love?)
(there’s no longing in the heart, nor dreams in the eyes)
(you are close to me in solitude, you are, my beautiful)
(where have the signs of our earlier love disappeared?)
(I am searching in vain for scent in the dried flowers)
(the same song may not come again, now with these broken notes)
(you are close to me in solitude, you are, my beautiful)

Raghu ji, What a dedication to Babuji on his Birth Anniversary ! Trully, a Great Performance. Felt like live. The translation is also very appropriate to convey the emmotions of the words by Shanta Shelke. Liked it very much. Awaiting many more Marathi Bhavgeets. Check my ‘Kevha Tari Pahate’ uploaded yesterday.

Wah Raghu bhai…. You brought me back to my childhood days in Mumbai…. I was raised with several maharastrian neighbors and early mornings used to be filled with radios blarring with such sweet sugam sangeet. Sudhir Phadke is indeed a BIG name and you have rendered this beautie with great finesse. Of course you have been a tremendous contributor on this forum. Hat’s off….L+F
