This thread is for listing recording software that can be used for recording new songs.
I personally recommend Audacity .
Its open souce and using lame can also record as MP3 directly. The software for converting videos to Mp3 is listed at the upload page. That is free again (based on a open source technology)

I use Accoustic Mixcraft software for mixing of my vocal and karaoke track.
I do not have much idea about the adjustements of ‘sound effects’ for mixing and recording.
Please give me some good idea of setting of the controls like echo (delay,feedback, wet and dry mix) , reverb, flanger, distortion for producing the optomal vocal quality while mixing.

‘karafun’ is a good free software for recording and editing of song with karaoke. If u want to correct some portion of your vocal, u can correct it with this software easily. Vocal track will be saved seperately.
Then u can mix with other softwares like mixcraft, cool edit pro etc…
