Friends v/s Follow in Muziboo

Last couple of months as activity on Muziboo has increased, we have been wondering if we should move from friends to a follow model. Here are our reasons

  • You may not know the person but may wanna follow their music. Follow does not need approval and so you can follow anyone’s music.
  • If you are followed you get a notification. You can follow them back if you like their music
  • The current friends on Muziboo will change to mutual follow if/when we move to this new scheme.

We have seen that as the place grows, people are more reluctant in adding others they have never interacted with as friends. However follow has no such issues. Do let us know your thoughts. Some other sites having a follow model are Flickr and Twitter

makes sense, because even if i add someone as a friend and many more in the due course, i would not have the time to check each and every persons profile. Though i currently do it through RSS feeds.

but with a general users perspective, those who are not friendly with RSS feeds, following would be a good feature. Only thing … you may need to add a feature where i can have tags of users, which will enable me to filter and see just that persons updates from the stream that i receive.

my opinion:
well i think it should not be friends vs follow…
instead it should be friends and follow(same as saying im a fan IMO) as two separate features.

*how is a friend different from follow?
friend: people i know already or wanna know more about
follow/im a fan: people i wanna follow for their music

*how and why it affects Muziboo?
Not everyone on muziboo community is a musician….so i might see his updates under my “friends’ updates”
but i would not like to mix it with “updates from musicians(users)” who i want to follow for their music.
if we mix the two as one…we will have certain user base with “orkut/facebook friends’ update feature mindset” and another with “twitter follow mindset”…i would personally suggest to have it as two segregated features as they have different purpose.the former is a normal social community based feature, while the second one is applicable for a music followers community base.n i feel muziboo is a mix of the two.

Think about it.

Hi Mohit

The only issue with that is that it should not confuse people. In that case, probably being a fan is better term than follow. So you keep getting updates from your friends and fans but they are sorta separated.

However I still have a feeling it will confuse people in general. In that sense, follow has a clear message: follow their music …. fan does not convey that message very clearly. Let me think more about it :)
