Satish, Jenefa- Thank you so much. It’s only that I don’t sing any song at one go. I give attention to every small intricacy and give lot of time for each song. I play the original song along as I record, so that I don’t lose focus. Listening a song many times is very very important than singing it just from your memory and is the key for getting it as perfect as possible:)
Maruthi- yes, it’s the way it has been sung in the original. The greatest factor that gives life to all songs of Mukesh is his feel. He was not a trained singer but had a God given voice and unique but simple style.
Shonnie, Shampak, Ahmed, Nithya- Thank you so much for your encouragement.

Suresh thank you so much. Mustafa, the original song does not have any reverb at all. But still I have added 10 pts to it :) Wanted the feel to be of close singing than a far effect. Some times some songs are best with our raw voice without any EQ or effect on it….

I am a bit choosy in listening to songs and find that you have done this job excellently well.
Being a class apart, you can imbibe the style effortlessly, which is rather difficult for a normal singer to grasp and perform.
Sure some of the oldies are my fav’. and grade it excellently.

Pradipetta : No doubt, your rendition is a absolute treat for ears. Modulations were great.
Like Murali, I missed your own style in this song like many other covers of yours.
In my humble opinion, all amateur singers like many others in muziboo including me, would like to hear your own style / modulations in your cover versions from which we can learn. Like Jagjit Singhji’s rendition of Kahin door jab or like SPB songs in his un-sung songs album. If I want to listen to Mukesh , I would listen to the original! Your natural tone is more like yesudas’s voice and i would love to hear all your songs in that tone. Especially the word ‘Saranga’ will be even better than the original with your original voice. Somehow The artificial nasal tone did disappoint me when I heard this.
Pradipetta, again this is just my thought, please do correct me with your views.

Radhakrishnan, Dr. Daniel, Kuhoo thank you so much.
Rajesh- Every classic song sung by a great singer appeals to a music lover because they have been hearing it since ages and they have remained in our hearts. Even the voice texture, the style remains like a photograph in our mind and heart. Neither SPB, nor Jagjit sing nor K.J.Y can ever re-create the same effect as the original singer however great they may be even if they sing songs of Mukesh, or rafi or so on. Likewise no other singer can recreate the same magic singing their songs in a different way. That’s why these versions of SPB or Jagjit Singh will never ever be remembered as their originals. When I hear a song it’s not the technical excellence like how many bhrighas or how many sangathis (harkaths) one sang makes it special for me. It’s the feel and the overall impact however simple the song may be that stays in my mind. Singers like Mukesh and Talat may have sung relatively simpler songs in terms of technicality compared to a Rafi or Mannadey but their greatness lays in the binding of their soul with the song. They were chosen to sing these songs for a reason by the great music directors who chose them even when singers who could sing more difficult songs were there. Those days each song was sung only by a singer apt for the song. I can never ever imagine “Kahin Door” being originally sung by Jagjit Singh and “Hazaroon Khwahishein” of Jagjit singh being sung by Mukesh, though I would say “acha hai” for a one time listen. I will never treasure Jagjit Singh’s version as I have treasured Mukesh’s original! Whoever sings a song first becomes immortal with the song if it becomes a hit with the masses by fate even if were not perfect. A style of a singer once having made an impact stays like a photograph in our mind even if the singer had technical deficiencies like a la Jassie Gift. If KJY says that I can sing Lajjavathi better with correct pitching and better sangathis, people would laugh at him and it would fail miserably as it was the impact and image that has already stayed in the minds of people which reigns supreme. Even in Music Show’s people want to listen the hits as close to the originals as possible. I have found people booing even the great KJY just because he tried to sing “Tamasamenthe” differently!
If my original style was of Yesudas I would never ever have been able to sing a song lilke “Chitti Aayee hai” from Bujjigadu. There is no point in forcing myself to sing a “Chitti AAye hai” in Yesudas style, for the simple reason that that is not what the song demands. If I were to sing every song as how Yesudas would have sung, then Rajesh, you and Murali would be the sole people who would listen to it :) And finally Rajesh, Hindi has to be sung as Hindi and not like Malayalam or tamil or Telugu I mean the dialect part and diction part. As I have said before, people like my cover songs not because I imitate the singer, but because I stick to the basics of feel, pitching, diction and try to put everything in the song. I try to make it as close to the original as I can. If it was a pale imitation of the singers voice, it would fail miserably! That’s why singers like Mano, Sonu Nigaam and Kumar Sanu have survived for even the time they did. But then in their case they had or have a singular style so could not adapt to the changing times. Sonu Nigaam has been an exception who has tried to be different and is exceptionally talented and so has been more successful in this regards.
When I sing my own originals, I do not imitate any singer and the texture and tonality depends on the song’s demand, and that’s what matters the most. You can listen to the post “Flashback” where I have put a demo of songs in which I am on my own. Having said that, it’s also not wrong if you do imbibe good aspects of singing from the greats. Even Mukesh and Kishore and Lataji have imitated K.L Saigal for that matter in the early part of their career. They have not been ashamed to admit it also. Imitation is the very basic nature of man. We all have imitated our parents as we grew. It’s ultimately, the feel, technical perfection and impact that matters! It’s only for a select few singers that I try to follow the original styles. If you hear my covers of singer’s from today’s generation you will see that I have added my own colours to them. You will not find Mohit Chauhan or Javed Ali or KJY in such s songs. You will only find the original style of the song in such songs. I believe classics should be left as it is without much experimentation. Some people also have this blind awe of some few singers and do want to hear every song in the voice of their favourites. I believe that every singer who sang in the golden period was special in his/her own way. Sadly, many so called music lovers or singers today may not even have listened to all the greats closely and still comment on their covers! If they had listened to more of the greats, the more they would have understood on why many including me try to stick to the original oldies as closely as possible.
Well again all these are my own views from my own experience and any one can differ with it as I have been happy singing what I sing and am satisfied with what I do as I do it with whole a lot of passion!
And you know Rajesh, immediately after Meri Awaz Suno, every malayalee wanted to hear only “Kabhie Kabhie” from me for a long long time just because they felt that my voice was similar to Mukesh! Imagine where would I have been today if I would have stuck to singing only Mukesh’s songs beleiving on public opinion! It’s a strange world with different people and opinions out there Rajesh. The public always tries to forcefully stamp a certain style and voice on you. If the singer is stuck to a particular genre or style by public opinion, then that’s disaster to his/her career in today’s music world. It’s for the singer to break free from this and try different things or then stagnation results. Only thing is “let your belief save you” or “Ninte Vishwasam ninne rakshikkatte” :)

Nice to see such discussions here in Muziboo. Civil ways of asking questions and constructive pointers while handling them. Totally unlike esnips, where there is a merciless curfew for anything knowledge giving
The message from the audience to Pradip bhai is “We love you, but tough love”. And Pradip bhai says, “I have my take, assisted by experience, on the understanding of singer’s ‘originality’ for these given circumstances”.
Hats off to all your talents and insights.
Rajesh Raman said
Hi Pradeipetta,
Thanks a lot for your time to jot down your Thoughts. We are on same page with respect to being open to different styles, genres etc. Only point i beg to differ is changing the the voice tone to suit the original singer’s voice. Sometimes it happens involuntarily when we try to bring the expressions like what the original original singer has done….
I have realized that If we sing the song as close to the original voice, it will be a instant hit, ….especially true for live programs! The audience will soon say ‘the singer is more of a mimicry artist’ :) It has happened to me and i know the pain :)
And specifically the comparision with yesudas was just for the tone of the voice…I am sure everyone out here will agree that you are even more versatile with the type of songs you cover.
My point is, everyone would only prefer to treasure the originals of classics. If another cover version needs to live long, that should be the singers version of the song( which definitely should be in the boundaries of what the feel & lyrics demands)…the perfection and the acceptance depends upon the singer’s imagination and caliber.
Again, do consider this a healthy discussion. Platforms like Muziboo were professionals like you are sharing your thoughts with amateurs, are meant to be exploited like this …. :)

Rajesh

Rajesh, in fact I am happy to be discussing with an amazing singer, composer and musician! It’s a pleasure to share thoughts on music in muziboo as for me, there is lot to learn from the extremely talented musicians here! I respect you and admire your talents and that’s why, I find happiness in sharing my thoughts with you!
I have been singing right from 1982 on stage and since then have sung as it appeals to me. It’s my opinion based on personal experience that never ever in my whole life, I have been dabbed as a mimicry artist. As I said before, only those who have dedication and special talent can imitate and get away with it. It’s not for the weak hearted and those who just try to imitate the voice without taking care of the other aspects of singing. I have even sung 20 songs of Kishore Kumar and almost the same number of Mukesh songs as seperate Mukesh/Kishore nights at Swaralaya Palakkad! In these programs I have for almost 3 hours sung as close to the originals as possible. Both these programs were special to me. I was never ever called a mimicry artist. Even on my Blog there are 130 odd songs where I have tried to emulate the original singers. Here also I for even once have not been subjected to any comments on mimicry. People are intelligent enough to see through your singing skills even in songs where you imitate the original. But only condition is that the singer should be exceptionally good and not fail. People appreciate the fact that you have sung it extremely well and the fact that there was an attempt to make it feel as the original will only come secondary if it’s close to perfect in singing aspects! All mere imitators will eventually fall and fail. Only who is versatile and has originality in his/her original songs will go far.
I also have said that only the original versions will stay. The covers even if sung differently will not live long as once the original is a hit and is impressed in the mind of the masses, it cannot be replaced by any other version even if it is better than the original! But it is also a fact that even covers can give immense joy to the listener, otherwise there would not be so many covers in the market! When we hear a cover and enjoy it, it is a tribute to those who originally created it!
What we all do when singing covers and what I do is not to prove anything, but just for the joy of singing such classics. If 99% of the listeners enjoy what I do and if I can make so many people here happy with how I sing, then I should continue doing what I do as it means that the purpose of my music is served. Music is first for the singer and then for the listener to feel relaxed and happy. I do have other platforms like films, albums and recordings where I have to sing original compositions and it’s there that I have to prove myself enjoy and sing in my own natural way.
And you know Rajesh, the first song that I sang for the audition of Meri Awaz Suno was “Dil Aisa Kissine” and the last song I sang was “Kabhie Kabhie” in the mega finals. I sang both these songs in the same way I sing now. Only difference is that technically I have improved a lot as a singer since 1996. If I was a mere mimicry artist I would have not crossed the audition (it was judged by none other than Sanjeev Kohli-Son of legend Madanmohan and Pamela Chopra-Wife of Yash Chopra) or won the mega finals (judged by Pandit Jasraj, Lata Mangeshkar, Bhupen Hazarika, Mannadey)! And Rajesh, I still remember my days at Andhra University Vizag where I used to do stage shows for an orchestra called Raga Vipanchi. There I used to sing “Akasha Desana” of KJY Garu and you know in many villages I used to have tears in my eyes when the locals used to come and put garlands of 100 rupee notes on me and make me sing the same song many times! You know why they used to do that? It was just because for them I was KJY himself singing on stage and not Pradip Somasundaran! The love and admiration for the original singer was being shown while I am just a medium through which they realised their happiness! These are sweet memories I will cherish always in my life!
And Rajesh, when I did a demo for Sandeep Chowta, in 2006 it included “Oo Sathi Re” a Kishore da song. Incidentally he liked it very much and I eventually landed singing three songs for him (latest one for the Telugu film Saleem in April 2009)!
My point is Rajesh, people have the knowledge to see through if you are good as a singer or not eventually even if you imitate or not! So just for the sake of sounding different, I would not kill the joy of imitating those select great singers who have left photographic images of their voices in my brain which I hear even today in spite of them not in this eternal world with us any more!
And for everyone who reads this: I never ever would force any of my opinions on anyone. Whatever I sing is only from my own experience as a singer and it need not be true or work for every other singer. Every one has to choose his/her own path eventually as every one of us is different and uniquely created by the ultimate creator

This is a wonderful discussion going on here. I actually wanted to add my views earlier, but then felt that being a novice, it would be inappropriate to raise my voice when two genii are discussing. But after the last post of Pradip Ettan, I couldn’t withhold my urge. First of all, let me start by appreciating the two of you for being such versatile singers living in this era. One of the best things that has happened to me in Muziboo is my getting to know both of you. Your music has given my heart immense pleasure and happiness plenty of times and I am sure they will continue to do so with God’s grace.
Now coming to the point. regarding cover versions, my understanding about them has significantly changed thanks to the talented singers in Muziboo. I think that at times the audience would choose to hear the cover version in its original form from the new singer attempting it or to hear it in a different style. But mostly, people want to hear songs close to the original. If the singer who is singing the song has by God’s grace the talent to make it 90% close, the audience will be elated. I would not call this an imitation, because here, the style, the way the words flow, and emotions are all depicted. Mimicry is a term mostly used in film arena related to acting where the artist tries to just imitate the voice and mannerism. But if you actually watch films, all great actors who have enacted wonderful roles would have been inspired by some real life character. They are not called mimicry artists. They just live that role for the 2.5 hours. Even in a song if you can just bring back to life Mukeshda, Kishoreda for those 5 mins, I would not sideline it as mimicry, but praise it as sheer talent. I have never seen those great singers perform live on stage, I may get videos but that is not enough. For me, if Pradip Ettan or Rajeshji can bring them back to life with the boons that God has showered for them, I would applaud them with the last bit of my life.
Pradip Ettan’s cover versions and original version are unique, charming and separate entities. He has put so much effort to make both be acceptable – the way audience wants. I remember a kid in a village called Koranhiyur in Kerala, glued to the TV when he heard a guy named Pradip Somasundaram singing Kabhi Kabhi. I didn’t know whether Mukesh sang the original, or whether it was Kishore, but it was Pradip ettan who struck the chord. So while saying this, I stand from my seat (even though no one sees me) and applaud this fellow human being who has utilized God’s gift in its truest essence to provide happiness to a soul who seeks solace in music.
These are my humble views and I think maybe Pradip Ettan has also said the same thing. But, yet I wanted to tell it in my way :-).On an ending note thanks Pradip Etta and Rajeshji for singing your hearts out for music lovers like me.
Regards,
Rahul

Other than L-P most of the music directors were of par excellence and soulful .All of a sudden in our generation we don’t find any so great melody maker .Ya Illayaraja is the only living legend .Paridip ji has sung this song beautifully other than the start “saranga” take which looked bit artificial after that it was smooth take off
