Picha Vacha Naal Muthalkku Nee-Puthiya Mukham
Picha Vacha Naal Muthalkku ... Lyrics & Chords
This song without any doubt been the most popular hit of 2009 among Malayalam films released so far. And this is the only song that’s hearable in the film “Puthiya Mukham”. This is invariably one of the very best songs composed by “Deepak Dev” so far in his career. He has not done a film for almost 2-3 years in Malayalam and it has been a great comeback for him with this song. Though the song is very popular the debate to whether “Shanker Mahadevan” was the right choice to sing this song, considering the fact that there was much to be desired regarding his pronunciation will go on. There is also doubt on to whether this was technically one of the best songs that Shanker has sung. Barring the above mentioned doubts, I believe that Shanker has done a fabulous job on expressions, and this song carries itself through sheer melodic but simple arrangements that Deepak has used throughout. The song has simple but meaningful and musically beautiful words woven into it.
This is my version of the song. I have sung it in my own way with some minor variations but largely within the mood of the song.
Song: Picha Vacha Naal
Film: Puthiya Mukham
Music: Deepak Dev
Lyrics: Kaithapram Damodaran Namboothiri
Original Singer: Shanker Mahadevan
I have also posted the video of this song with the voice swapped with my cover :)

Pradip Etta,
The rendition was superb. Nice feel and all. I heard it once in the weblog and now here. So on the second hear a small thing I felt, the second time you sang “swanthamaay” in pallavi….did a stress come on the word?. 5/5 for rendering this song in a pleasant way.

Ohhhhhh Pradip, how beautiful!!!Your singing has every thing that this song needs, I have not heard the original but I am very happy with your rendition, don’t feel the need to compare. Amazing, so much love and affection in singing. I love Deepak Dev’s Compositions; my first exposure to him was “Thumpi Kinnaram”

Pradip ji, I love many songs of pudhiya mukam! And this is one song which got me crazy n kept me humming like kangal irandal with my own wrong malayalam lyrics. This song is such a surprise from you. I definitely like it much better than the original. There was immense feel. Dhirana humming was beautiful. Your emphasis, modulations on certain sangathis were breath taking!! There are so many things which we can all go on learning from you. Obviously the best cover of the song! Goes to my favs!!

Rahul thanks, I sang “swanTham” rather than “swanDam” at most parts, which is how it should be spelt and pronounced and hence the stress on the word. Even if you say swanDam, it should not be too obvious. We all have to learn a lot from the great K.J.Y’s diction on these things. Don’t know why the lyrics writer did not observe this or correct this part :)
Rashmi,Harshan: Thank you for giving in an ear.
Swati: yes, D.D’s melodies numbers are a delight to the ears!
Ramya, Meera: thanks a lot.

Rahul: its so sad to see that many have imitated even the wrong diction of Shanker and sung as picha vEcha instead of picha vAcha :) Nobody takes care of such things today. Not even the creators of the songs. They even glorify it in the name of “Style” !!!

Pradip Etta,
You just spoke my mind. Recently, in an interview conducted by John Britas with Shankar Mahadevan in Kairali. Shankar said that he couldn’t master diction of two languages Bengali and Malayalam. But he was trying his best and that he is not proud of his current renditions diction wise. It is indeed sad that our keralites itself choose not follow the precise diction that our mothers have taught us and follow something wrong for the sake of style. I think if the song was sung in its true diction(not accent) it would add its beauty and give it the right style. Also as you mentioned it should have the lyricist who should have been the right person to make sure the words are said correctly. But I guess nowadays a lot of constraints have come in this fast world. Even I had some diction issues for my akshararoopini song. But atleast I feel bad about it and don’t shrug it off saying it is style :-).

Rahul

Pradip, This song by Deepak Dev is his strong comeback after a gap of three years. The song is good, but I feel Sanker Mahadevan was an absolute misfit for this song. I am all the more convinced about the same after listening to your version-this is how the song should have been!
A full five for your superb rendering.

Kumaran, Dheeraj: Thank you so much.
Rajeev: Thank you so much. Hope instead of foolishly spending hefty sum’s on singers who don’t give what they are paid for, we malayalees realise, accept and make use of our talented singers instead of thinking that the average malayalee is a fool who would happily accept any thing thrown at him! I still believe that a P.Jayachandran, or a Vidhu Prathap would have done full justice to this song! I believe it is the duty of a true professional singer to give 100% for the hefty amount he takes for rendering a song.Who has the time for that today? Music Directors would not give even a penny to our local singers and would spend Lakhs to get a song done by singers who don’t speak malayalam correctly! But there are exceptional singers who take pains to learn the correct diction. We should remember the greatness of S.Janaki, P.Susheela, Vani Jayaram….and many others who have given us immortal songs!

But i think its not that bad considering that fact that the charecter of prithvi is a palakkadan pattar… who would have a tamil influenced malayalam accent… is it intentional that depak dev wants soemone wit that accent to sing this song?? not sure though… just my view. :)

Ha ha ha…… hope in the film Prithvi speaks Palakkadan tamil accent than assal Trivandrum accent too. Dheeraj, our Palakkadan tamils speak better malayalam than us……. :)But still there would be no justification for all songs in the film mainly being sung by Bollywood singers!

Rahul Soman said
Dheeraj,
I totally agree with you about the accent and would like to confirm that accent is not the problem here. The issue is even if the character of Prithvi is a palakkadan pattar, he doesn’t have to pronounce words wrong. The diction is in question here not the accent. Also, if you see the character of Prithvi in the movie, he doesn’t speak with a palakaadan accent does he….:-)….

Priya: thank you so much.
Sam: Thank you so much for the observations. Any song esp this one does require effort from a singer, and is not a “moonwalk” and I will never say that it was effortless. Listen to the original song and the effort will show :) Cutting the breath is easy now a days, in recording software, so it was done intentionally. Breath is an integral part of feel of a song and adds to the continuity and natural flow of a song at many parts. It’s not a sign of effort. If I cut off breath at all parts it will sound funny! Its there in every modern song recorded today. Early, breath in a song, was considered to be awkward now it is considered natural!

Thanks Shampak. The original song does not have any reverb at all! Still I have given a 9 point reverb in TC reverb(spring effect). Do listen to the original and you will know what I mean :) It’s just like masakkali/Roobaroo(Rang De Basanti) song where you have a proximity kind of effect. It’s all how people at our mixing tables are changing our hard built views on how a song should be. More of western influence is there in mixing techniques.Today they say that what we were doing was all wrong. The voice should not be heard loud and clear (as we singers would like it to be). It should just be heard, and the background music should be prominent. They say this is what songs in the west are like :) Well, I myself am from the old school, but you have to change according to the times isn’t it?

I think you have undoubtedly rendered a better version than the original by Sankar so it is 100/5 …however the character in the movie was that of a ‘Pattar’ from Kalpathy where there is Tamil “Chuvai” to Malayalam and vice versa….:-) To my mind Sankar’s singing was delightfully befitting the required characterisation of the protagonist in the movie…
