Mohini Ninakkayi-Original Song from Manjeeradhwani(1997)composed by Illaiyaraja-With K.S Chitra
Mohini Ninakkayi-Original S... Lyrics & Chords
This song holds lot of nostalgia for me. It was my first one with the maestro Illaiyaraja and my first with my singing icon K.S Chitra!
When I was young, hearing the greats, I used to think that they were God’s and could not go wrong or falter! And finally when I had a chance to work with two God’s of the industry, I knew that I could touch them and feel them and they were as human and humane as we were!
An anecdote from the recording at Chennai AVM C Theatre:
I had to sing in three different voices for this song. This song was very tricky and the part where Chitra sings “Ninne Japichu……” is without any rhythm and the guitar chords and the base guitar twangs are the only guides to the timing. I had already finished recording my parts and was eagerly awaiting in the console room, to hear Chitra sing! When she reached the part I mentioned no matter how hard she tried she could not sing the part correctly. She struggled for almost an hour and with each try she was losing confidence and her voice quality was going down. Finally the music director said. “Chitra lets have a break. Lets’ have food and re-do it(it was already 2.00 P.M)”. Chitra was relieved. “Pradip, why don’t you join us for lunch? Chitra asked me!” Well I was speechless! Her house was close by at Saligramam and a beautiful home she has there. I asked her if she was fine. She laughed and told me. “Pradip, I think you are alarmed by what you saw. These things do happen some times. And when it does, the best way is to take a break, relax and then start fresh”. I had a sumptous lunch at her house and after we came back, with the very first take she nailed the song! Again her speed amazed me!
Well I had learnt my biggest lesson in life.
Our mind is our biggest friend and foe. If we know how to handle it well, then we can conquer anything in life!
Song: Mohini Ninakkayi
Film: Manjeeradhwani (1997)
Music Director: Illaiyaraja
Singers: K.S Chitra & Pradip Somasundaran
Lyrics: M.D Rajendran
Film Director: Bharathan (Late)
This song was transferred from an audio cassette and so excuse me for the bad audio quality. It’s a long peculiar kind of song and am posting it just for the nostalgia

Excellent! Thanks for sharing this, Pradip! This sounds like a real tough song to sing with those dynamic rhythm patterns. Great job!
Your anecdote is very interesting. Also, the lesson you have mentioned is very true. Sometimes I sit with my keyboard and try to compose something for hours and will not get anything interesting. Sometimes I will get very catchy melody lines while I am strolling or driving with a lighter heart. You are very ture…. Our mind set is the most important thing than anything else.
Btw, was wondering whether you had any interesting conversations with the legend, Ilayaraja!

Bala: he does not talk much and is very focussed and serious on what he does. Luckily, it was my day and I could sing the song without any problems so it was totally uneventful.
paras: The I warn you was already there. The language is malayalam. Yes, it is a scene where the actor “Vineeeth” acts in a Ballet where he is a “Shilpi”, there is the Devil, God and then two lovers the "Shilpi and his “mohini” the creation. The tug ends with love supreme succeeding even death…….

Very Nice Composition n singing by you as always.
Actually i started listening music (hindi) from the time of A.R.Rahaman but after knowing Illaiyaraja I can feel that he is the real legend of music……BTW i feel ‘chandralekha’ title song of a.r rehman has a lil bit touch from this song.
Illaiyaraja is a real inspiration !!

Pradip Ettan,
The composition is indeed a tough one. To sing this itself is a great challenge. You have really sung well. But the song didn’t appeal to me :). Maybe because its very much oriented on the visuals, hence it would be nice to hear with the video.
I am really glad to know that you got to work with the maestro.

Hope you had a great time with ‘The Everlasting
Supremo’ and ‘Chinnakuyil’.Loved the song in
your voices and what to say about the legend’s
composition?A very adamant,strict,garvam
pidithavar in his work.Ofcourse these all
qualities is a must in him, otherwise a song
cannot become a super hit.A very serious person
and a less talkative man.Raagadevan’s composing
was something different in this song.Enjoyed
it a lot and great effort by you and chitraji.
Liked your part very much in diff voices.
Loved the description and all the best
Mr.Pradeep.keep singing.5/5 and goes to

Pradeepetta, eventhough this song was released in 1997, I am listing this first time now. Let me tell you frankly, I don’t like this song. :-( May be it is due to my bad music sense. But the ‘experience’ you had with chitra chechi… is really nice to read.
Thanks for sharing….
