Kuhoo: Pradipettan is right about your voice and pitching. :-) You have rendered your part with such ease and perfection. Wonderful job!

Pradipettan: most of the singers who sing ARR vocal portions tend to imitate his voice but here, as you usually do, you have put your own signature in this song. And I believe it wouldn’t be too much to say that had you sung the male portion in the original this would have had a totally different dimension. Those high pitched portions you have sung, at 04:35 onwards, I literally got goosebumps!! I truly wish from the heart that ARR uses your voice in one of his beautiful songs such as this.

This is a beautiful pick and WOW what an effort to execute to perfection…….

1.The guitaring in this song is awesome and moves me even today(as much as roobaroo)…in that sense one of the very few Indian songs where rhythm guitar has carried the song for most parts,before the tabla kicks in.

2.Awesome singing by seasoned players and very very enjoyable……Personally would have preferred Kuhoo sounding her self rather than Lata.Well but then it is just my view.

3.The track is as good as the original…….whether it was re produced or vocal removed it was just phenomenal.

4.The mixing was superb except that guitar panning during the interludes,instrumental portions,which was mildly distracting.

Over all today has been a great day for us here in Muziboo to have been party to two great covers by stalwarts(First one being CC’S Krishna)…….5/5

I liked your rendition better than Lataji’s in terms of note perfection (without the tremble in Lataji’s voice in this song). But I felt that the feel could have been better. Since it is about a mother singing with her son, the feeling of motherly affection I somehow did not get in your rendition. Just my opinion! But the notes were so perfect and all harkats so enjoyably done.

Any word to comment would just not be enough. I first thought you have put the original song in here. Only after I noticed the male voice to be different than A.R.R that I went back and read your description. OMG! Kuhoo sounds just like Lataji. No one’d believe it if you hadn’t sung along with her. By all this I’m least discrediting your talent. To be frank, just that I was a bit overwhelmed by Kuhoo’s voice!

Pradip – Excellent work as always in reproducing the original feel. I’ve always wanted to tell you this, but was not sure if I should. I feel you are such a talented singer and are capable of bringing your own originality to songs. You can reproduce songs brilliantly. But I’d rather hear YOUR interpretation in some of these. I believe that perception of a song is not the same for every one who hears it. There are die hard Ashaji fans who would say that Lataji has never been creative or say in a laymans words added “extra masalas like sangathis” in her renditions. She and Yesudas are more of the Music Director’s obedient student types who never went beyond what the music director said. This shows in their live shows also. But this does not take away the truth that it’s the wholesome impact of what they produce, which is blemish less divine singing with voices which were perfect and has had a wide range with respect to the high’s and lows. In spite of that there are some songs and sangathis that are irreproducible by any other singer! They never used their capabilities beyond what was needed. If we would analyse their voices using DSP based equipments(has already been experimented and proved by experts) we would know the reason. They do not have to add any extra masala to create an impact. Their perfect voice is aided by correct pitching, depth, range, diction, throw, modulation and feel supported by years of rigorous sadhana. That’s why in spite of whatever many other singers do through adept firework display of the vocal chords, it’s always the Lata’s or the Rafi’s or the Kishore’s or the Yesudas’s and S.P.B’s who occupy the primal place in the heart of millions! A God given voice aided by simplicity is the key than complexity which ultimately dawns on maturity and years of experience. One has to work with the likes of Illayaraja to know what I mean. He never allows the singer to even try simple variations to his compositions during recording or on the stage (when he is around). Most of the Music Directors from the old school were so. Maybe that’s why these greats were molded this way. The Interpretation is the overall impact of differences in voice texture, style, delivery, technique, feel, diction, voice dynamics, modulations, experience, flow, and everything that a singer has got rather than a singular conscious effort to make it feel different. This can be subtle which would not be noticed by every one who hears (perception differs) or it can be evident by display of vocal chord fireworks.
Age does play havoc with our vocal chords. I do not know how many of you would have noticed that Lataji who never sounded like Ashaji in her best days(they both had completely different voice textures)sounds like Ashaji at many places in this song. Especially where she goes to the higher notes! Lataji used to sing and speak in the same voice. I have never seen her using falsetto or compress her voice to reach the highs, in her best times. And there are singers who have always sung in falsettos even in their best times :) They are in for trouble when they age. Some small things to observe and think about! We also will reach that age soon!!!
And coming back to the original song, I did observe a glitch by the Guitar player in rhythm strum from 1.12 to 1.16 or are my ears failing me ? Do correct me if I am wrong!

Let me congratulate first on attempting such a soulful composition and doing it so masterfully. As you suggested, I downloaded the 320 kbps and listened it in my noise-cancelling headphones with full volume. And let me tell you what did I hear,
You touched me both so much that I had tears in my eyes. I got goosebumps and was completely numb. I am so touched that I called up my mom to just be with her over the phone.

I wont say its a song, would say its a treat for the ears of your vocal prowess and unimaginable feelings poured into it.

You guys are the best singers on Muziboo. This is by far the greatest collaboration ever on this space. This site is honored to have such an upload.

Pradipji, Superb writeup about the legends. I also have the same take. Legends are Legends for a reason. It was very inspiring to read it from a great singer like you. I’m a huge huge fan of Illayaraja, SPB, Yesudas, Lata and last but not the least, ARR. My complete lifetime has been spent hearing them in all stages of life. I was never trained in Music formally but these legends are the core reason that I’m here at Muziboo today. Keep us all young inspired music lovers with your valuable experiences in the industry and some good tips every now and then to correct amateur singers like me :)

Illayaraja in many ways have inspired me with his nerve catching songs. Tunes are the life to any song and his tunes are nothing but everlasting one’s. We are all simply gifted to have him score so many movies and songs that can never get out of our blood. Background score – He says the story in it. I think he was the first and foremost music director in India, who gave a very big importance to film scoring and ever since, every music director tried to follow his path and is till trying to make a mark. No one can even dream about coming close to Raja’s BGM’s.

I’ve seen him once talking in an interview where he said, Music is nothing but a medium to reach people, to say the feelings of people. It is full of life and it needs simplicity. I think he has definitely spoken what his music has done to the world. Music has to stay in the heart and Illayaraja would be the Music director who takes the credit to have people hear the songs of 80’s and 90’s, still. Of course, MSV sir is also a genius in his own ways but the orchestration that IR song has is uncomparable. With the fast paced world and full of technology, music creation has become easy but it has seriously become like passing clouds. We hardly hear the song after a month of the first hearing. That is the quality of music these days. But Illayaraja’s music is a miracle. His songs are like sculpture and the stamping is pretty hard to be taken out. LONG LIVE IR

If one can feel proud to be an Indian, Rahman can take some of the credit for that very feeling. The musical creation by MSV and Illayaraja are no doubt the most respected ones but were not able to reach a global audience. Life needs a change and so is Music. Rahman has taken Indian music international. That does not mean music to indians at international grounds but to millions of people totally originated from other nations too. What an achievement made and at what an age!!

I am so happy to cherish the first intro song that Rahman had given through film music and specifically through our ever popular TV program called Oliyum Oliyum. Chinna Chinna aasai came up on the screen and it created a feelng where you see a very beautiful looking girl :). The flute that was used to kick start the song was a never heard sound then. The crystal clear sound provoked everyone. People went crazy and became a die hard fan of Rahman in just weeks after that. Thereater, as they all say, it is History.

The things I love about AR is his theatrical sounding music. Of course there is technology involved but why is other’s music not sounding like that. Yes, the reason is just not that it is technology alone, but the underlying compositions and the musical arrangements that is always stunning. When I used to hear Western Music during my younger days, I wondered if our Indian music can make such an impact. After AR’s entry, it has all vanished. My wish is, AR has been colloborating with great musical minds from all over the world but I want him to for once collaborate with Illayaraja and create a tsunami in Music. I don’t know if that is feasible but I just hope. My true love for AR will be there forever. LONG LIVE AR.

Pradip ji undoubtedly this is your skill showing song…… I felt this part at sariga……ga could have been slightly short…so that the throw in the ga would have came out bit more powerfully……and the reverb would have taken care of the rest of the length in that ga. pa ri is wonderfully sung with that chesty singing at 5:32

Kuhoo has simply eased through the song as a female playback singer should with a lot of skill. Her talent is great.

Pradip Etta, You gave this song a new dimension. It was truly professional. I could sense the thirst in you to excel this song, as it had all the elements to showcase the true colour of someone who has practiced music for a long period. This song cannot be considered as a cover as it is better than the original.

Well I will write only what I feel.

After I heard your version I thought that I did not realise that ARR sang that well. Then I realised that it was not ARR.

Lata suited more for that song because her voice sounds as old as the woman she was singing for. Kuhoo should sing song for younger people instead.

Kuhoo, one thing I observed about your singing (not just in this song) is that you seem to have Carnatic inflections which kinda surprised me :) Not that its bad or anything, just a neutral observation- its quite unusual to find that in north Indians :) Yours is one of the few shrill, yet grounded voices with great breath control. You’re really gifted. Keep singing!

1.kuhoo ji had tat worry a mother has on his child n requestin him to come bak in her voice as did lataji……

2.pradeep ji has tat enthuse in his voice to tell his mother wats goin around him n how beautiful things are …… n when he sings tat part (even though i m in such a beautiful world as in ur stories i m feelin lonely without u )he shifts the enthuse into pain in the voice wch A.R.R did not in the original…. tats y i liked this more than the original……

when eva i listen to this i go n hug ma mum ….
no exaggeration :) ….
