Reality Shows….Well I watch few times….They make sense to me…

PLUS :
—Learn to Compete
—Get Popularity
—Chance to go near Real opportunities(not sure but)
—Hard work you do in all these days is just pure gain


MINUS :
—I hate Voting System as Voting is State based instead of Music Based.
—Singer just beg like a begger instead of let his music speak for himself….
Just remember a scene from movie called ‘SAAZ’ where Raghuvir Yadav sing a SONG , in heavy RAIN , called ‘BADAL GHUMAD BADH AAYE ’ as his friend said u r a begger asking for 20 Rs. He say I am not begger and sing that AMAZING song to EARN it…I just love that attitude in SINGER ’s personality. But here situation is after you sing…you have to BEG ….thats a worst thing I have ever seen…
—SMS count decide the winner doesn’t make any sense to me…but its needed to let reality show going well.

—All faltu music directors who do all kind of faltu Bakwas should be replaced with comments we have on MUZIBOO …which make some sense…and encourage to learn…


I would not say that INDIAN IDOL doesn’t help…But I am just not happy with the NON MUSIC things involved in this….So I prefer to change the channel once participants sing the SONG ….


Few more Ideas:
—We have lot of talented composer…there should be a competition on Composing and Lyrics writing…
—There should be competition of music Arrangement…Music arrangement is a key part in any successful music these days.

Shows like Indian Idol and many other shows are prima facie a boon for a singer. It all depends upon how a singer utilises his/her opportunities. It can make or mar a singer..

I do agree with most of the points what Shashank has said above. Would add a few more.

These sort of shows more or less puts a virtual stop to the leaning process of a singer..He/she is put to too much of fame and adulation. This gives them a feeling that they are the supreme singers and that added to the lack of time almost forces them to unknowingly stop practicing. Managing fame is an art, which many don’t handle properly.

And then the system of selecting a singer supremo by voting is not the correct method. This is not politics where popularity counts. The talent should be rewarded whether it is popular or not. We have seen people spending lakhs of rupees to canvas for the votes for the contestants. Votes are sent based on the communal/regional preferences which are still a bad practise. Many even tell this while making a vote request.. Bengalis voting for a bengali contestant, Punjabis voting for a Punjabi contestant or andhriite voting for a telugu contestant is not a nice practice.

Then comes the judges..There is major ego clash amongst the judges. They try to prove/show off their caliber more than to judge that of the contestants. Moreover there is rarely a concurrent view on a singer’s performance. They tend to argue in a very cheap manner on TV which is not really a healthy trend.

Lastly but not so in its order of importance…The way the comments are passed on the singers performance. Sometimes they are too much insulting and sometimes too much praising. Both are bad..They should know to have a balanced commenting which will make the right impact. This will prevent the contestant from getting disappointed or over confident.

At the end of all these, what happens to even the winners , we have seen. Road to success is still not so smooth to many…

ENVEEK - In my “Second Innings”

1. Agree with all the points made above.
However, the voting system, the drama and the reality element is what seems to be keeping the TRPs up. so, if u take out the voting system, ppl like u n i may watch it with more keenness. but the producers want mass audience following. :D just the way, saas bahu serials go.

2. to generalise, if u watch something on TV tat u perceive is unintelligent .. it is probably going to be much more popular. Cuz it is made for a mass audience and most ppl love laughing at others.

3. there are also shows such as roadies and splitsvilla.. which are constantly tryin tat much more to “westernize” the indian mindset for the bad. i m not against them being aired, but i dont see the point.

4. in comparison, i guess music reality talent hunts are probably better off. they do provide contestants genuine oppurtunities to knock on the right doors.

5. i guess there are quite a few contestants who realise tat stardom thru such reality shows is just a jumpstart to their career.. and not an end in itself.

I don’t know whether i am a right candidate to write my opinion here since i have divorced television as a dumb and passive medium quite a few months back.. My marriage to the Internet serves me well with all the information i need, with the interactive company of quality friends like Prateek and Shashank.

I was however pushed to participate in this big racket called Indian Idol. Yes i do feel after seeing the whole process, that its a racket of the SMS providers and the TV channel which can go to any extent to show media buyers that its got eyeballs.

Indian Idol entry process:
The process of entry requires you to send atleast 3 premium SMSes. Most of the people there waiting on the line did not even have the requisite confirmations. But they were rounded up like a herd of goats and so the herd psychology goes. I began to get more curious

I saw people doing all sorts of circus to get featured in the recording. Hanging from banyan vines, doing mimicry and everything but music.

The long wait: People from all over the country were kept waiting for 8 long hours without water.

audition: was done in a room with a yuppie sitting four feet away.. with a loud pedestal fan giving accompaniment.

Most professional singers in my group were right away rejected. Some of them had come from very remote places.

The Great drama: I stopped watching Indian Idol after i got assured that they are not showcasing talent… rather like the Hindi news channels, they are trying to sell cheap sensation. Which in no way can help an artist. Its not a wonder that right from the groups created by channel V through talent search and the past winners of Indian Idol are nowhere to be seen.

The cabaret of Judges: I was appalled to see SOnu Nigam doing a near child-abuse, rudely speaking to a child participant. Maybe both of them were trying to act a sensational drama… but what are we trying to convey here?

Sonu Nigam and the other judges with the “X-factor” are nowhere close to the musical stalwarts we have in this country. They are just plain popular by false publicity and their music hence will have less shelf life.

When Indian Idol speaks about X factor.. they better be clear.. are we appreciating talent in Music… or are we creating night club singers?
