Hello All,

I am currently studying popular music at the University of Sheffield, England. I am interested in the effects and changes of our ever changing, technologically advancing world. I wanted to post a few questions to musicians, and fans concerning this important question. By finding your way to this music site, I know that everybody here is effected by music in some way and I want to discover how our ever changing music reflects us.

Perhaps through our dialogs, we can learn from each other, and make better sense of this world we live in. I wanted to leave this questionaire open and you can feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Feel free to add your own questions as well.

1. What kinds of music do you like to listen to, and why are you attracted to these sounds?

2. What is your musical background or what kinds of music have you grown up with?

3. How does music connect with people? ie: through sound, genre, lyrics, emotion…Why do you listen to the music that you do?

4. Can you define hybrid music? Is this an important question?

5. Thoughts on sampling of music? Is there a line between stealing music and being inspired by music?

Once again, write what compels you. What are your concerns about music, or what you think about when listening to music. Many many thanks and happy listening.

That looks like an interesting questionnaire. To start off with,
I have no music background. Just interested in
listening to new music. With that I will give my views on all your
questions.

1)Ilisten to all Indian music. What attracts me most…the melody
n the rythm

2)I have only grown up with Bollywood music and some western stuff

3)Lyrics and emotion play a good part. Sometimes videos for music
add to these factors. sounds and genre are ofcourse important too

4)Hybrid music is very interesting. It makes consuming somehting
new and complicated very enjoyable even being an illiterate

5)There is definitely a clear line between stealing and inspiration.
One can always use a concept from a composer and create a whole
different experience. I wouldnt consider this stealing cos I
attach a different experience and feel to the music inspite of a borrowed concept.

What compels?what attracts..what makes some music groovy…Such
questions seem complicated to me at the moment

I would associate it to mood. In India Bollywood music seels cos
it heavily relies on the backbone of “context”. Its not out of the
sky. The music has ppl behind it, those ppls emotions woven around it
and the colors and the costumes and so many other things

Thats why in India it is very difficult to sell Indie music. The
reference n context is heavily missing.

I guess there is a good attempt to change this mindset, sell music
for the sake of music and appreciate music for what it is worth
than associating too many other things…Its a hard struggle to
change mindsets though :)

Hello Kamini, Thanks for writing. You had said that you listen to music for the melody and rhythm. In what settings do you listen to music? for example when you at the house, club…

You had said that lyrics, emotions, and genre are factors that connect people to music. Do you think that the connection is a personal one or a community thing? What effects does music have on culture, or culture effect music? both?

I totally agree with you, that hybrid music can take something familiar and make turm it into something new and fresh. Do you think that music/musician is always evolving then?

Thank you for your thoughful answers. I know that its hard to explain and define music because it is an aural experience that moves our soul, so sometimes that is hard to put into words. There are many ways to share it and I think if people are to talk about it, people will see and appreciate all types of music. They may not personally be over the moon about it, but at least they would better understand the new music. Take care, and hope to talk to you soon.

many many thanks,
j

Music at home, music at club, music at social gatherings, music at restaurants, music at cafes…music seems to be everywhere these days!...but most times it is just in the background, unintrusive. You get to pay attention only when u listen to something familiar.

The connection to music is to some extent personal and to a large extent cultural. It is definitely a community thing. There are certain kinds of tunes that appeal mainly to certain kind of ppl. Community plays a major role. All said, there are tunes that have a global appeal too.

Music to an extent, I feel, has an effect on ones culture. Culture having an infulence on music is undeniable.

With any kind of fusion, both the music and the musician evolves!

1. What kinds of music do you like to listen to, and why are you attracted to these sounds?

PMD : I like listening to rock, some blues, contemporary music (like REM , Fray). Most times I am not even sure what genre a song falls into. I guess I just love songs for what they are. Not really care about genres. Most of the new music i discover is through the local FM channels (English Channel). There is only one in bangalore, where I live

2. What is your musical background or what kinds of music have you grown up with?

I grew up with Hindi music. But now I rarely listen to it. I grew up listening to music from hindi movies (like everyone else)

3. How does music connect with people? ie: through sound, genre, lyrics, emotion…Why do you listen to the music that you do?

I listen to music while working etc. I only call Pink Floyd as my favorite band. Others are just songs I like. I particularly like Roger Waters and his work as a whole. I guess I like the whole creativity there .. not just the points u mentioned above. Even stuff like stage presence, concert appeal. Wall the movie ? Syd Barrett again. The whole air around him.

4. Can you define hybrid music? Is this an important question?

No I am not aware of hybrid music.

5. Thoughts on sampling of music? Is there a line between stealing music and being inspired by music?

I guess there is. If I ever finish learning guitar .. I am sure I would be inspired by what Roger does … my whole inspiration to learn guitar is to be able to play the song Mother, wish you were here etc etc :)

Sorry am not a composer so can’t answer this any better
