pavan, thats essentially right. i didnt play the exact phrases though. first i match the sa of ushrinivas/ustad sultan khan (slightly higher than note E), set the sa of my drone on din to this sa, record a few phrases and sandwich them with ushrinivas’s mandolin.

there are 2 major versions of din. in ushrinivas.mp3, i use the bowed version where i use the mouse like a bow to select pitch/volume continously to play indian classical ragas – can do gamak, meendh etc.

in podhuma_wheynuma, i use the plucked version of din which assigns notes of the scale to keys on the computer keyboard. attack and decay of the notes can be controlled and there is a flexible feedbacked delay for fx.

both versions are in development based on what i like to do at the moment. both versions have a range of 3 octaves – can be as many as you want though.

my heart though is with the bowed version as you can really play ICM with it although a bit slowly as i dont have note jumping – suited to alaap in dhrupad style say.

some like bowed. some like plucked. my neighbours probably hate both :)

that was at a practice to get a feel for the play. they wanted some music for a dream sequence and another where the character is in a confused state induced by sleeplessness. we rerecorded again at a quiet pub (oxymoron) later. it was close to the train tracks at balham station and the music was punctuated by trains passing. added to the effect. we also got a review in a german newspaper. it said the music is as oppressive as the play :)
