Hi friends

I am writing in relation to the Carlton Towers fire accident that took place in Bangalore on Feb 23, 2010.

Amongst the victims are two first-time visitors to the building who got stuck in the lift and got choked/burnt to death, a to-be father whose wife is 5 months pregnant, an only son who was 23 years old, a mother of two little girls and more such people whose family members were waiting for them to return home that night but instead got a call from Manipal Hospital’s mortuary.

Survivors like me and families of victims have joined hands with an aim to:

1. Spread awareness about fire accidents and how to be prepared (and ensure your building is prepared as well)

2. Ensure justice is served and the guilty brought to book

This group is called Beyond Carlton and brings together people who have lost a near and dear one, people injured in the accident or just anybody who wants to join in and contribute for the cause and add more power to our group by airing their views and suggestions.

A Carlton Towers can happen again, and most probably very soon it will – unless we act now. It could be your office or your home next.

We can not overcome government attitude, redundant policies and red tape in a jiffy, but till things change we can learn how to react in such emergencies and insist on greater safety measures in our daily lives, be it the workplace, home, the malls we visit, the hotels we stay in or the schools our kids go to.

Our kids deserve a better and safer country than the one we inherited. If you believe so too, come and join the group ‘Beyond Carlton’ on Facebook (and Twitter) and make us stronger. Our aim is also to get an online petition going for which your signatures will be valuable.

Join and help us take this cause forward. We believe that India has the potential to be a developed nation, but the biggest obstacle is our own attitude. We as citizens are not really concerned about such issues, not angry enough to be able to change things. Your just being a part of the group on Facebook (and, if you wish, sharing your views) will give us immense strength, and you can stay updated about related events as they happen.

Regards
Nitin
