Shenbagame Shenbagame (Tamil Cover)
Shenbagame Shenbagame (Tami... Lyrics & Chords
A lovely Asha Bhonsle song by IR, the maestro from the movie Enga Oooru Paatukaran(1987).
I still remember falling for this song during the tape recorder days.
Srini had asked me to cover this song almost a year back and gave me this vocal cut he had done for me. Sorry, Srini that i took so very long to get this here.
This is one of the toughest song that I have covered till date. Only when it came to recording this, did I realise that I was carrying a much diluted version of this song for a long time, which i found difficult to undo from my mind.
Though I have given it my best shot, am certain this can be a lot better. And my apologies, if I have butchered the language. Looking forward to your feedback, as always.

Dear Radhika Sis,
Lovely singing by you of this beautiful composition of Ilayaraja sir!…Really loved it a lot:)…I think you tried to match Ashaji!…Unga voice romba superba iruku…Ashaji doesn’t know tamil…so that only her pronunciations will be differing!…you have captured her singing accurately. Hats off!…Higher notes pogumpothu konjam gavanam thevai…mathapadi I liked your singing a lot sis:)…tc…

Lovely cover Radhika… agree with Harry … you truly sounded like Asha ji.
I felt that in your rendering of the opening humming and mukhda, particularly the latter, you sounded a mite tentative…I may be wrong… in fact in each of the pallavis you didn’t sound very certain , almost groping cautiously… but both the charanams were excellent… you just cruised through them near perfect… the feel also was quite good… closing na na na was superb however…
Regarding butchering the language…. you did no more and no less than the butchering Asha herself had made in the original … lol…
Overall… an excellent cover

Kaushick & Saroj – thanks a lot.
Kaushick – thanks a lot for those pointers. You are spot on about the humming (thanks to a very different convenient version that i had latched onto!), but the pallavi – didnt feel too uncertain there, but will check what you pointed out.

Loved the murkis and those subtle places – Ashaji’s speciality. Kudos……!

Amazinggggggggggggggggggg pick!!! Such a marvelous tune that even a layman like me wud love to hum – Thanks to the Maestro IR Sir. Hats off to you for attempting this cover irrespective of the language barrier. This is certainly not the place to show my prowess on Thamizh/ Tamil diction…. It’s the music and ur voice that adds beauty to this rendition…. Asha ji has undoubtedly sung this in style and Radhika ji has sung in her own style to the best of her ability at this point of time. That’s the way I would like to register my honest opinion…. And u wud know that many try their best to butcher their own sweet mother tongue…. It’s called official butchering if it had been ur mother tongue; otherwise it’s not…. In the second stanza, I felt ‘Paarthu’ @3:27 required more sustenance at the turnings. Nevertheless, a laudable performance by you. Once again, it was a pleasant treat to my ears. Many thanks Radhika for kindling the nostalgic moments through this rendition…. Best wishes for the future renditions in other languages….

Radhika,
Very well sung….
Felt the start didnt come out as well as you could. Maybe you were trying hard to match the original in all aspects(?).
The rest of the song is as good as the original, except at few places.
Good job done. Keep singing.

Not many of us would like this movie but only the songs and as usual, due to my eccentric fondness, I like this movie very much for its stupefying melodies; diligently weaved background scores and down-to-earth screenplay… And you recreated that magic with your inimitable tone/texture and I could spot Asha ji only at a couple of places in this whole cover… Initial humming could have been better and would have come out well, had u understood the succeeding lyrics… I mean, the humming ought to be delivered with a glee that gushes on face, thinking someone ‘special’ and the rest will surely be felt by the listeners… :-) This is the basic problem that frequents when we cover songs from another language without any clue of the meaning or the gist of the movie… But honestly speaking, I loved this rendition and an additional care to iron out those phonetic glitches would ve made this the best compared to the original… But I remember having listened to this cover version from you long back… Not sure… May be a deja vu… :-)
Thanks,

Rads: Nice song pick for your voice. The best thing I liked about your rendition is the expression – how well you captured the ‘feel’ of the song and presented it. Knowing your potential, there are some places I think you could do even better – flow in pallavi, the initial alaap and a little more care in diction. Charanams were lovely and the ending was neat.

Know that you dig this song and actually your dabba player made me carry a lighter version (Yeah, when your vocal chords dont have it in them, blame it on xyz!) Problem is that most of my recordings are weekend impluses and you know that AM the best native language speaker around there – Point well taken – wish i had picked up the language like you did, at least folks would know that its Tamil thats being attempted :-P!)

Lovely pick, Radhika! Some places were awesome (eg. un mogam paarthu, en veettukkaaran paatta). Agree with others above on beginning aalaap I think you retained the original humming in second interlude. But I know you are capable of much better than this with a little more diligence.
Enjoyed it much! :)

Radhika,
Very nice to hear this song in your voice!
Diction issues and alaap clarity etc already pointed. The original itself had diction issues….so a non-native cannot rectify them and pronounce it correctly in the cover.
you sang very well, your feel was excellent.
Very welldone….really enjoyed it.

Lovely pick, Radhika and your voice is just awesome like Ashaji – alaap at 2nd antara – was it the original or you? Beautiful expressive singing, and I can’t comment on diction/accent much, but I felt that could be improved on. Esp. wherever you say “hey”, if you sang “ey”, it may give a more Tamizh feel perhaps?
Liked,
Sudha
