Rating feature - improving usability

Prateek,
I have often seen people intending to rate but forgetting bec one has to scroll all the way up to reach the stars :), espec when already many comments are there on the song – Have you thought of bringing the ‘rating block’ to the visual range of the user while posting comments , maybe on the right pane??

Hi Radhuka
Thanks for writing in. After reading your post, I went and checked the numbers in our database. Last month, we have had comment to rating ratio of 5:1. That is, for every 5 comments, there is one rating. I am sure the number can be improved but I don’t think its too bad. In my experience, I don’t think most people would both comment and rate.
Initially we put the ratings box right next to the player to encourage people to rate while they were listening to the song. Also since its above the fold, people see it first so ideally there should be more ratings than comments. I think in general a lot of people don’t rate at all. We can surely experiment a bit with the placement. We have been thinking of making a few more tweaks to the design and we can test the new placement then.
For now, I can add a message saying “Comment posted. Would you like to rate this music?”, with ‘rate this music’ being a link that takes you to the top of the page. How does that sound?
