When George suggested that i should open my entry in Self Assessment, much as i wanted to do so, my reaction was that its too early for me to do so since i havent been around here for long. But when he said that maybe early on itself, it might make sense to get others views to better my singing – i thought he had a point.
So here goes…
My short term goal: Be a singer who doesnt make basic errors like in pitching, beats, notes etc.
My long term goal : Be a singer from whom consistent performance is guaranteed and who is continuously improving in terms of quality and preferences.
Strengths:
1)I can connect well to whatever i sing. Emoting comes naturally to me and most of the time i dont have to consciously try and bring in feel to my voice & singing.
2)When am in control of my voice(pl see related point in weakness), i do decent modulation of my voice.
3)Mid range and low range is decent most of the times
4)I like to push myself beyond the limits of what i can do with ease and hence my song selection is not necessarily limited to what i can do well.(At times this can be at the
cost of you guys who are listening though :) )
5)Not to fish for compliments – but a month back, am certain you wouldnt have found this entry from me in my strengths. Honestly till i came here i had never thought high of my voice myself bec i considered it to be very different and not necessarily accepted by all. But now,i do think that i have a generally accepted distinct voice. Though at times i have heard feedback of sounding similar to Asha Bhonsle or Geetha Dutt when i do their songs, I believe i have my own different
voice and its just that the tonal quality sometimes seem to bring in a semblance.
Weakness:
1)Gravest of my crimes – at times i tend to slip to off notes. That way , am not a natural who without practice can hit all the notes right all the time.
2)At times i dont seem to have full control over my voice throw which tends to bring in the off notes. Now that i have started to use my voice more regularly after joining here, i think am getting better in this aspect – but not yet where i wish to be.
3)When i sing semi classical, am not able to bring out clarity of all the notes that iam touching( its related to point above)
4)High range need to improve. The strain in the voice can be felt when iam singing at higher range.
5)My voice doesnt suit all kinds of songs.
6)Hindi diction – till i came here i thought i had a decent Hindi diction :) , but i realised that i have a lot more to improve
7)Since i have always been exposed to mostly Indian music, i take time to open up to other genres of music. Am getting better, but i can be more open
Even though you havent heard me long enough, would greatly appreciate your views on my self assessment.

pretty neat write up Radhika. Self assessing certainly helps to improve. U seem to know ur strengths and weakness very well. Like the way u have set ur goals. U r a very good singer, have a beautiful voice and as mentioned emotions come natural to u!! so… have fun singing:) Loved the way u had handled Ek Lau. Thats my favourite of urs:) wud love to hear more such numbers from u. Do work on high notes… easily comes with practise…

Radhika,
First of all, a great job with the assessment. Agree with you on all counts. When I think of your singing, one thing that sticks out is expressions. I think you do a good job with that. Your low and mid range as you stated is your strength. I think you tend to hold back when you sing. I think its a confidence thing. I am sure in a couple of months, I will have to ask you to hold back :-) You are very good in your element… but at some point you should venture out and try other genres. Trust me, you will surprise yourself. Alos try to stretch yourself in terms of range. When I joined muziboo, I never thought I could attempt half the songs I have ended up doing. I just kept pushing my limits. You should do the same. Mixing is another area that needs improvement. It is true that a good singer does not necessarily need to know how to mix. But in this day n age (Web era), it is a very useful skill to have.
I am extremely glad that you are part of this community and wish you the very best in your musical journey.
