Very well done…great expressions and pitch perfect….I think you are all set for going live! can’t comment on diction as I don’t speak Tamil…your voice needs to come up a bit more on the mix….good luck on your live performance.

Very good for one take. One suggestion, few phrases u seem to start boldly, later the volume n clarity slowly fades out especially in the first charanam. Ending of the charanams tat humming- eventhough thr r no offs, sum notes out of the raga,if your audience dont mind its ok.
Kaladi thedi vandhen – vandhen n following nindren can be clearer.
Nice one Bcuber. All the best for ur live!

Good attempt BCuber. Lovely voice you have there! Very good pitch control!

Are you trained in classical? Nice sangathis but many “podi sangathis” (eg. kural koduthaal, ezhudiya kolangaL, thedi vanthen) need to be polished.

Agree with Ramya with all pointers above. Lyrics: Kann vizhi pidungi nindren is the right one! :)

Give us more songs! :)

Thanks Ramya and Adithi, exactly the kind of criticisms i was hoping to get…. I am not trained in classical, hence the issues in trying a classical number like this one.
- Never like pidingi ninrein…. adhan changed it :)Thinking of it now…. pidingi makes more sense….
- wrt podi sangathis, are they to be totally avoided or do they need to be in the proper sthaanas? Pl. advice :) Also to gain control over the sthaanas, i know varnams help, will doing Thodi and Kalyani varnams be a good start?

no, please do not avoid the sangathis but make them more refined and freeflowing.

Do you know the above varnams? If so, yes they help but the best training for getting a grip on sangathis is doing the sarali and janta varisai in all kaalams in a few raagams! :) Carnatic training definitely helps :)

For me this one is too good :-) As Ramya has said, I too observed the loss of energy towards ending phrases ( I have the same problem, and you sound far far better).

Not an easy song to sing, you have done a wonderful job. Some of the improvisations you made didn’t exactly come out boldly. But for someone without classical training you have great voice control.

If you are looking for some “self tutoring” in carnatic, check this site out:
www.ecse.rpi.edu/Homepages/shivkuma/personal/music/
But if you have time and a available guru, please consider taking carnatic classes. You can do magic with yr voice.

Thanks Sowmya! In the second charanam, i was experimenting a bit with emoting, adhan :) “kan” i wanted to see if I shrink the timing a bit it would seem like winking, same with “saaythu”, “soduku” and “avasthai” looks like they did not translate well ;)Thanks for your comments, glad to be part of this group!

Hi bcuber,

Good singing :)but just a couple of things that I noted.Ur pronunciation is good but u seem to have changed that final sangadi in the charanam that comes after “undan vaartaiyil ulladadee” and “pudu kavedaygal endruraippaen” and also some podi sangadi’s in “undan kaalade thedi vandaen” but other than that it was great and your recording is perfect.keep it goin bro !! Do listen to some of my renditions if you find time and post your comments :)

Your Ennavale song was good. But listen to the original again. That was sung by Unnikrishnan. The Legend. There is some unknown mystery. Some unexplained complexity. A really brilliant vocal rendition.
Anyway, make sure that this is constructive critisicm. Listen to Unnikrishnan like mad. It is a sure shot way to improve your gamakas. Remember that Rahman openly told that Unnikrishnan is the one with “A Golden Voice”. A.R.Rahman’s easily recorded around 30 songs with Unnikrishnan sir.
