About this music
Kannatthil Muthamittaal is one of my favorite movies from Mani Ratnam. Needless to say that the music by A R Rahman for this movie is awesome. My favorite song from the movie is Vellai Pookkal sung by ARR himself, but the title song is also beautiful. This song gave Chinmayee a huge break and made her name famous in the south Indian music industry. The male version was sung by P Jayachandran, one of the finest singers of our time.
When Sindhuja suggested that we put the male-female cover versions of this song in our blogs simultaneously, I thought it was a wonderful idea. We did the initial humming part in each other’s versions too. The karaoke track was in slightly higher pitch compared to the original though. I must say I like Sindhuja’s version a lot. So head over to her blog after listening to this. And do let us know your comments as usual. :-)

Original singers: Chinmayee, P Jayachandran

I am not too sure about the ambient chords playing in the background of the karaoke tracks.. i think they got it wrong or something
Yes, the track is not so good and we had to edit at certain parts. You will notice the difference at places like towards the end etc. :)

ENVEEK - In my “Second Innings”
Hey Joseph,
Yes, the songs from this film are my special Rahman favourites, particularly “Vellai Pookal”, but I absolutely dig the title song too. What a complex tune it is and what intricate arrangements! Yes You and Sindhuja have done a great job here! I felt that the key was a bit too high for a female singer, so I guess she had to stretch her vocal chords a bit, right? But it was right in the zone for you, Joseph I think. Yes there’s a slight editing glitch in the track towards the end, but that’s marginal. Your voices sound good together. Why don’t you guys do songs from say, Pudhiya Mugham or Thiruda Thiruda, something like that?
Keep up the good work!
Gaurav, thanks a lot! :)
NVK , thank you very much. :)
Susmit, Thank you. Yeah, there are slight editing issues. We will try to do these other songs. Thanks much. :)
Heard Sindhuja’s version yesterday and posted comments there. Your version sounds awesome also. For some reason the recording quality of your version is better than Sindhuja’s version.
Thanks Kumar.
hey this is one of my favourite songs. sends shivers each time i listen to the telugu version. haven’t heard the tamil version till now.
Thanks Suresh.
Nicely done, Joseph! Particularly, singing the charanams in this song is difficult and you have done it well. Am I correct in saying that the tempo is a little faster than the original? My only suggestion is this: PJ is known for the way he subtly sings some nuances. You may want to incorporate this in his songs. Good job!
Hi Adithi, thanks for your comments and observations. :) Yeah, the track was faster and higher in pitch. I will definitely take a note of the nuances that you mentioned. You are right about it. These subtle nuances are which we usually ignore while singing covers but would actually give a lot of listening pleasure.
