Meaning

If you are the great mother who created this world with seas all around, are you not my my mother as well ? Am I not your son ? Why would you not feed me your love? Would considering me as a younger sibling of both Karthik and Ganesh and playing with me belittle your reputation ?

Abirami Bhattar was a poet and devi upasaka. His unshakable bhakti towards Devi can be compared with Meera’s towards Krishna although unlike Meera Abirami Bhattar considered himself to be a child of Devi. In that state of mind he composed many devotional hymns many of which have been tuned and sung by carnatic experts.

My inspiration for the song comes mainly from the imaginary dialogue he had with Devi. I usually like to write songs as a dialogue with certain deep emotion rather than calling the God by a bunch of names. In fact, that is how a prayer generally is – highly personalized. Thus I have conceived a situation similar to that imagined by Abhirami Bhattar and have composed the song which I present today. This was written by me in a language much simpler than Abirami Bhattar’s language.

While Abhirami may be referring to an invisible Mother, the undercurrent of love expressed in poem can easily invoke the thoughts of our own mothers and their affection thus enabling a strong connection with the poem. Similarly all gopika-radha-krishna themed songs have wonderful undercurrent of love and flirting that they can be enjoyed even by non-religious people.

This song was composed in Sep 2005. Orchestration started in Dec 2010 by Sibu. Sibu has been wonderful in helping me arrange some of my songs which will otherwise never see the light of the day since the pace of my orchestration is severely hampered by my professional commitments.

Unni has really taken pains to learn this song well and has rendered it with utmost sincerity. As we were making the song, he also got married and he sill found some clever way to continue his music :) Wishing him a bright singing future and a happy married life.

A translation of the lyrics is available in the youtube video above. Please feel free to comment and let us know how you liked it.

Murali,Beautiful composition on shanmuga priya with apt lyrics…Felt voices been supressed in mixing, controlled the throw.Second stanza last few lines lyrics could have been shaped even better with sandham.

நீ தாயோ ? – is it “thaano”?

If possible give a different bgms for the sec charanam.and You could make a collection of the compositions to release an album.

Unni, very controlled singing….

Excellent song to hum for this week….Enjoyed it…

Dear Murali Anna and Unni,

The initial alaap was superb. Both of you complimented each other. I have one question there though. If you listen the tone in which Unni started the alaap is nowhere to be seen later in the song(It should have been the same tone with his baritone coming in). Later it has become too soft.

Both of you have sung your portions in your own unique style yet sticking to the idea of the composition. The flute portions that kick in when the first interlude starts are very good.

Murali Anna while you are in command through out the song. I am saying this based on the confidence in which you sing. Unni follows mostly like a humble younger brother awe inspired by his partner’s singing.

Unni has sung quite well at certain places Kundarin Velanai…portion had some amazing sangathis….also in the thundu pallavi after the anu….the “Maname” sangathi…. through out the song also there are some subtle sangathis and brihas of Unni that has captured my mind.

I really wish Unni would have given more life to the lines “Amma….Amma…. Amma….” As a lyricist I feel Amma is the only word that deserves all life even if it means you have no life left….

I second Sowmya about a change in BGM for the second charanam.

Please forgive me if I have uttered something stupid here.

You guys have come up with a very tough song. I appreciate that.

Dear All,

First of all my thanks for such quick reviews.

@giridharan : Happy to see a fellow tamil lover. I surely will be in touch

@Meera Iyer: Thank you very much !

@Raj : thanks for your wishes once again !

@ Sowmya / Rahul : Thanks for your kind inputs. Not many take pains to write in detail about the songs they get to hear on web and for that quality of both, I really thank you.

As you may have seen in the write-up the song has been sleeping for almost six years with an orchestral alarm provided last year by sibu. I do agree there are some mixing issues with vocals getting compressed etc, but after persisting with it for almost 1 yr, I was the one who decided : “Ok lets go with this version”. Hence any mixing issues recognized must be attributed to my judgement.

As far as different BGMs are concerned : They are indeed different as you may have noticed the flute and veeNa in the first and the lute kind of instrument in the second. Of course, the dharmavathy portions in strings were repeated only to give a well-rounded feeling. I had a thousand ideas for the BGMs myself. but as you may notice, the song is already more than 7 minutes long ! Longer BGMs may tire the listeners out. Hence, we went for the shorter ones.

This song was a tough composition both for Unni and me primarily because, Unni had distanced from classical singing for long and as you may know I am not a typical classical singer since I am self-taught. Hence, we both put tremendous amount of effort to get our portions right. I guess at some point we had to move on and that call was entirely mine.

BTW it is நீ தாயோ ? The word amma apart from being used for mother, can also be used to address a lady in a respectable fashion too. In this context it is the second. It is more of a ‘scream’ of a devotee.

And as always Rahul : Never apologize for commenting. Your interest and feedback only gives us a shot in the arm.

By far, THE best original I have heard from your stable, Murali.

Both of you did a great job at this, although flow wise, IMO, you took an edge over KB. And I do see your point about him not having sung classical in a long time. From a mix standpoint, thought your natural tone was lost ( as in your voice is naturally more bassier), this was way sharper than normal. KB’s voice on the other hand was not as bright as yours, although it had the right amount of base, which is his natural tone as well. That I thought would have made the mix slightly better.

Plus’s:
Murali—Your flow was absolutely delectable, sangathis fell exactly where it was meant to, and the ease of delivery was fab. And it is even more impressive given your almost non-existent classical background, learning wise!
KB-your emotions were spot on, and I really loved the way you intonated words to give that required bhaavam. Kudos!!

Felt the tones chosen for the orchestration could have been revisited, but then totally see your 7 long years and going back/forth thing. So nitpicks apart, brilliant composition, very enjoyable with the right dose of challenges. I might end up covering this as a solo sometime :)

Cheers,
Meera

Vinay: Thanks for stopping by and providing feedback.

Jenefa : Thanks you very much !

Music Aficionado : Very happy to note that you could feel the maternal love in the lyrics. That tells me that the objective has been achieved. Thanks !

Meera: It is a strange coincidence that my friend sheela and you both had expressed a wish to hear the song in your voice. Seems like people are already connecting your voice with the song imaginarily and that definitely must be accomplished someday. As far as your comments are concerned, I would repeate that both Unni and I had a tough time delivering this ourselves and we did put as much effort to realize this song in this form. May be another 2-3 versions with more refinements could have enhanced the qaulity of delivery and mixing, but after persisting with years together I thought this was good enough to go. However, when I go for any further songs in this genre (which I certainly will) I will accommodate your afore-mentioned inputs. Thanks !

Prahalad : Thanks – yes but with some liberties.

Meena : Hoep you are well. I know I have been away for most part from muziboo, but we can catch up sometime. Thanks for your comment.

Vijesh : Thanks. Of course I am eagerly awaiting our project to complete as well.

Very impressive composition Murali. The choice of raagam went well with the emotions conveyed. Singing wise, both of you have done wonderfully well. Felt a bit more open throated singing in certain spots will give it more punch, perhaps an improved mix could do the trick as well. Felt Unni’s voice was more subdued in the mix and could be raised up a bit. Orchestration sounded very good but perhaps repetition of some patterns could have been eliminated. Wonderful work overall.
