RABINDRA SANGEET – Phoole Phoole Dole Dole…
Lyrics & Chords
Rabindranath Tagore was an unparalleled genius in selecting germane tunes to aptly convey the mood of his songs. This is a very short but sweet melody in Misra Kedar which beautifully expresses the hopeful and happy state of the mind.
This song was an inspiration from a Scottish ballad – Ye banks and braes o’ bonnie Doon [by Robert Burns (1759-1796) who was Scotland’s greatest poet], which Tagore heard as a young man on his first visit to England.
(You may listen to this original Scottish song here: Ye banks and braes )
This song appeared in Satyajit Ray’s 1964 Bengali movie Charulata in a swing scene and this was also an inspiration for a scene and song in the 2005 Hindi movie Parineeta.
I attempted a translation of this song into English restoring the original rhythm of the song (so that it can be sung in the same tune and rhythm in English also).
Blooming blossoms nod their heads when
Swaying softly in the breeze
Soaring stream with bouncing waves keeps
Surging in a joyful swift
Cuckoos in each flowering twig sing
Coohu- coohu- coohu –wow!
Musing mind of mine does not know
Why it sighs and says alas!
Hope you will all like my attempt.
