Paadariyen Padipariyen - HamsaPriya

Lyrics & Chords

Dear Friends

I have chosen this song for my 50th upload as the meaning of the song fits very well with my message to you all- I have no knowledge/understanding about music generally and I am not big headed! I have not learnt Classical Music at all But I am passionate about music.

I am sincerely thanking the Almighty for giving me the sense to love and appreciate music.

I have to thank you all for accepting me as one of the singers in this forum and for offering your support, constructive feedback and encouragement so far.

I have to mention here that I won’t be singing at all without the faith that a great soul (who doesn’t want to be named here) had /has in my abilities and the constant encouragement, motivation and guidance that this person has been showering on me.
All I would say to that person is “Thank you & I owe it all to you!”

Special Thanks go to Anbu Bro for offering his precious time to mix it down.
Thanks Bro!

This rendition is far from perfect & Please pardon my mistakes.

Thanks to you all for listening & Happy Tamil New Year to all

உங்கள் அனைவருக்கும் எனது மனம் கனிந்த இனிய தமிழ் புத்தாண்டு நல் வாழ்த்துக்கள்

HamsaPriya

ஹம்ஸப்ரியா

I have managed to collate some information from the internet about the Context of this song in the Movie and have tried an approximate translation of the lines in English.

Once I get better version of the translation I shall replace this version.

Sindhu Bhairavi is a 1985 Indian Tamil language drama film directed and produced by K. Balachander starring Sivakumar, Suhasini, Sulakshana, Delhi Ganesh and Janagaraj.
The film’s score and soundtrack are composed by Ilaiyaraaja. The songs in the film were sung by K. J. Yesudas and K. S. Chithra. The film won three national awards (Silver Lotus Awards) in 1986 for Best Actress (Suhasini) , Best Music Direction (IsaiGyaani Dr ILayaraajaa) and Best Female Playback Singer (K. S. Chithra)

The plot of the film revolves around the three lead characters J. K. Balaganapathi (JKB) a renowned Carnatic/ classical singer, Sindhu ( a music teacher) and Bhairavi, wife of JKB.

Sindhu (Suhasini) attends one of the concerts of JKB, where he is performing a Thyagaraaja keerthana- Mari mari ninne which is in Telugu Language. Sindhu finds that some the audience are having a conversation amongst themselves instead of listening to the music.

She believes that it is possibly because the Audience don’t get the meaning of the classical number. Hence she suggests to JKB to sing songs in Tamil language as well in addition to singing classical carnatic songs in his concerts which everybody in the audience can understand and appreciate.

He gets angry at the controversial suggestion of being asked to sing folk numbers or light music in his Classical Carnatic concerts. He challenges her to demonstrate it.

She successfully demonstrates it by starting to sing a folk song and ending it with the same classical number that he sang earlier in Telugu Language. She is applauded by the audience.
KJB gets mesmerised by her beautiful voice and her ability to sing well with confidence.

Few days later, Sindhu apologizes to JKB. He finds out that she is an intellectual equal and admires/respects her for her knowledge of music. They end up falling in love with each other.

All the songs in this movie are exceptional and are composed under the sindhu bairavi ragams and few being composed under the branches of sindhu padham.

The way the folk song “Paadariyen” merges with the Carnatic song "Mari Mari nine” is admirable.

Ilayaraaja is said to have believed that all the emotions, feelings and depth found in the carnatic songs are adequately, if not, equally available in the folk tunes.

When K. Balachander (Director of this movie) narrated the context of the song to Ilayaraajaa that Sindhu sings a folk song and most unexpectedly switches to a carnatic tune, ILayaraajaa apparently came up with the song within 24 hours. This also became the biggest controversy in his career. Maestro ILayaraajaa faced strong opposition from certain classical musicians for having changed the original raga from Khamboji to Saramati
-————
The following is an approximate but not an exact English translation of Paadariyen Padipariyen song (Please pardon any errors)
-————
[Paadariyaen Padipariyaen Pallikkoodamthaanariyaen
Aedariyaen Ezhuthariyaen Ezhuthuvaga Naanariyaen
Aaetula Ezhuthavilla Ezhuthi Vechu Pazhakamilla
Elakkanam Padikkavilla Thalaganamum Enakku Illa]

I don’t have knowledge of songs or grammar of songs/ music

I have not learnt traditional music properly

I am not good with my lyrics and don’t have the habit of writing lyrics down

I am basically an illiterate when it comes to songs/music

I am not big headed person either

[Arthatha Vittupputtaa Athukkoru Bhaavamilla
Pazhagina Bhaashayila Padippathu Paavamilla
Ennavo Raagam Ennannavo Thaalam
Thalaiya Aattum Puriyaatha Koottam
Ellaamae Sangeethanthaan Sathathil Porantha Sangathithaan
Sadjamamenbathum Dheivathamenbathum
Panja Parambaraiku Appuranthaan]

Without meaningful lyrics songs don’t make any sense and won’t have expressions

It should be acceptable to sing in a language that one is used to (i.e. in one’s mother tongue)

Audience can appreciate a song better if they can understand the meaning of a song

All kinds of songs including folk numbers are good Music as well

All the musical notes are derived from sounds of all kinds (including the ones that common folk speak in)

Appreciation of music by Common folk should take priority over singing classical music in a different language that people can’t understand or relate to

[Kavala Aethumilla Rasikkum Maetikkudi
Cherikkum Šaeravaenum Athukum Paatta Padi
Ènniyae Paaru Èthana Paeru
Thangamae Neeyum Thamizh Paattum Paadu
Šønnathu Thappaa Thappaa… Aaa…
Šønnathu Thappaa Thappaa Raagathil Pudusu Ènnathappaa
Ammiyarachava Kummiyadichava Naattuppørathula Šønnathappaa]

Please try not to think / worry too much about singing folk songs

Please sing songs that would reach/ be appreciated by all class of people

Do you think I have said something wrong?

This tune is perhaps new/unacceptable to you

However this tune has been sung by village folk ages ago

Mari mari ninne moralida nee Manasuna daya rathu (Telugu lines of Carnatic song)

Mercy is not coming in to your mind,
even when I entreat you again and again

Excellent singing Hamsa…
Absolutely flawless and wonderful rendition.
It is so difficult to sing this song confining within the thaalam especially in the beginning and you have smoothly and effortlessly glided over.
The Alaapanam was so perfect, especially 1.31 and 2.29 and the swara prayogas are really superb…
God bless you.
Kind regards,

Hamsa,

Very Happy to be part of your 50th upload and I believe you are going to make many more of this 50’s in the coming future. As Priya said, you have not only been inspiration to female singers but also to many singers in their duet renditions. A variety of songs that you have posted for the male singers proves that statement.

Marvellous Singing and it’s quite hard to believe you are not classical trained. Only “Isai Bhakthi” or “Isai Veri” (not Kola Veri) can make such feat possible and acheivable. Hats off to you for that !!

Wishing to hear more and more such wonderful numbers from you !! GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR VOICE !!

Regards

WHAT A SONG PICK!!!!

Your sense of occasion is amazing :-)

I echo Anbu brother’s comments – it is quite hard to believe that you aren’t classically trained – The amazingly sung line “Ellaame Sangeetham thaan aaaa….” was when I decided that I should start typing my comments :-)

There is no words to express this rendition of yours – choose any superlative you want!! 1000 times favorite :-) It is such a pity that I can click on the favorites only once :-)

I am no expert to appraise the song, but as a listener the experience of listening to this song is unbelievably fabulous!!! I can post two comments per line, but I don’t know whether there is restriction on the no. of words per comment :-) I clapped non-stop for a few minutes after the song ended. Would have given a STANDING OVATION and a bow if I had seen you in person!!!

I echo everyone else said – I think this is a fantastic place to pay tribute to you.

This tribute is not just for the 50 songs you posted as Hamsapriya, but also for the 145 k-tracks you posted as HamsaRishi.

I am so glad that I searched for male k-tracks in the internet. My breath control was all over the place for a solo and therefore I was looking for duet tracks when I found yours in the internet. What would have been a small experiment that would have ended within 1 day (it started for an office party and would have ended there), became a passion because of the list and variety of songs you posted as k-tracks for male singers. What amazing song selections, fantastic renditions!!! I came to this forum knowing only you and you were so warm, friendly and forthcoming with help when I approached you. I am a very shy person and I choose my words carefully, but you are such a wonderful person that I even didn’t need to be careful with my words.

I owe you not only my 70 songs posted in the forum. I owe all that I will post in future too (and some that I wouldn’t post :-)). You have been an incredible boon to all upstarts like me and I know at least few more male singers who take advantage of k-tracks – this is only the people who I follow – who knows how many singers download your k-tracks and practice using them, but never post them anywhere (I myself never posted for the first 9 months). Just take a look at the statistic, how many times your k-tracks have been downloaded :-) That should tell you the story.

Thanks for reaching 50 and letting me get these things off my chest, which, otherwise I never would have been able to express :-)

Congratulations on your 50th upload – but actually you are only 5 short of 200 :-)

I wish you many more hundreds and hopefully much higher pedestals than that!!!!

Congratulations to you my dear friend and GOD BLESS YOUR SKILL, YOUR VOICE AND YOUR ABILITY TO GET INTO ANY SONG.

What a privilege to know you, to listen you and be able to post comments on your renditions!!!

GOD BLESS.

Chandra

Singing comes naturally and if you have it training might help polish it but nothing else. Your singing is neat, poised and nice sounding. A little training will definitely help you improve tremendously. A very unique and vocals oriented song this was. Hamsapriya you did very well. The track and mixing is also very good….your voice was projected very well. Enjoyed it, a good listening experience and yes congratulations on your 50th upload.

Hamsa,

Just wanted to listen to this again :-)

Since I have put in a lot about this rendition in my rather small(?!!! – lol!) comment above, I thought I will share something else.

During our 10th standard, I don’t know who came up with the lyrics, but some one did (or may be taken from some magazine) and I used to be the designated singer to sing the below:

Sine ariyen Cos ariyen
Trigonometry naan ariyen
Square areiyen Cube ariyen
Geometryum naan ariyen
Notula ezhudha villa
Ezhudhi vachu pazhakkamilla
Formula padikkavilla
Manapaadam seyyavilla

Oh, I was completely in agreement with the above lines at that time. God got even with me, I had to finish graduation in Mathematics eventually :-) – Final result varumbodhu vayathula rombave puLiya karachuthu…. lol!!!

- My comment is an opinion. Opinions are like wrist watches and I have one. I am not sure the time in my wrist watch is the right one.
