Mathura Nagarpathi.....

Lyrics & Chords

A haunting song in Subha Mudgal’s powerful voice that tears me up every single time I listen. It is from a brilliant movie “Raincoat” by Rituparno Ghosh. It is impossible to not fall in love with this song when the movie opens. Besides the powerful voice and a simple arrangement, it succinctly weaves the whole story into simple lyrics.

Here is a summary:
It talks about Krishna leaving Mathura, where he is the King, to go back to Gokul, in order to meet his beloved, Radha. It describes the pangs of love that so suddenly encompass Krishna that he renounces his regalia and kingly duties and feels the need to head to Gokul in the middle of the night, while his people watch in dismay. Radha on the other hand is a house-wife now, engrossed in her daily chores. She has long wiped off the tears of separation.
Poet asks Krishna repeatedly : Oh lord of Mathura! Why do u wish to go to Gokul now?Why do you want to bring back those painful memories once again?……….

And here is my version of it(This song sees the light of the day after many software crashes, having an extremely bad quality mic didn’t help either. Please bear with the very-far-from-perfect recording quality :-))

Song:Mathura Nagarpathi
Music: Debajyoti Mishra
Movie: Raincoat
Lyrics: Rituparno Ghosh
Original Singer: Subha Mudgal
Unplugged version : Kavitha Nagarajan

I thoroughly loved it!!! You’re our muziboo’s subha mudgal…. :)
The only point of improvement is the recording. The lack of clarity, kills the beauty of the song. But, I am sure you will get better at it with practise. Keep posting more.

Kavitha : This is very strange. I wrote a song very recently in similar lines. Check this out.

Your bassy voice and rendition sound very good. Have you tried some of the fast sangathis that shubha does in any of the songs ? thsi song probably does not have it. But, your voice is kind of teasing my expectations. You have done some very subtle sangathis well and I have a feeling you have a pretty powerful voice for much more complex sangathis.

@Rashmi – Thank you. I totally hear ya on the recording quality. I have an extremely bad mic(just an internet mic) and to add fuel to the fire, Audacity kept crashing on me – I almost thought it was a sign that I just shouldn’t be attempting this song or something…:-)I had to record like a million times. I had half the mind to not post even:-)This I guess is the price I pay for being a cheapo and not investing in a good recording setup…:-)

@Murali – Thank you. Very interesting indeed. I enjoyed ur poetry and had a few thoughts – comparing the two songs and perspectives they offer. Can I mail u in detail?
Regarding this one, this is the first song I am attempting in Subha’s voice, although I have tried Usha Uthup and Malgudi Subha before. I am in general very weary of roller-coaster sangathis and approach them with caution…:-) This song like u noted, has more subdued and subtle sangathis as neccessitated by its compelling mood.
Please do listen to the original if you get a chance, let me know any areas of improvements.Thank you again , Murali.

Nice rendition indeed, as Rashmi mentions you need to concentrate on technology a tad better.

@Neha, Thank you. I agree with you 100% on the technology part . I had a tech-melt-down during recording of this song. :-(

You have a very mesmerizing voice Kavitha. The listener cannot do anything else but listen to you. You have that feel in your voice and especially in this song. Beautifully rendered. Please get some good recording gear quickly because you are depriving us of enjoying some quality singing.

Hi Kavitha….glad to listen your voice. You got a very unique voice….i think you can sing in a wide range of pitch than typical female singers range….good sense of pitch, smooth take off and landing…it’s all very nice. quality can be achieved no problem…good luck.
