Lab Pe Aati Hai Dua

Lyrics & Chords

One of the masterpieces by Dr. Mohammad Iqbal (1877-1938) includes this dua (prayer) which asks God to bless us with love for the entire world, love for one’s country, love for knowledge that becomes a blessing for the entire mankind and lastly, compassion for all human beings.

Dr. Mohammad Iqbal is referred to as Allama Iqbal in Pakistan. The word Allama means a highly knowledgeable person. He wrote from most simplest to the most complex poetry in Urdu and Farsi. A great philosopher and thinker who wanted to rejuvenate the Muslims in India. People say he was the originator of creating Pakistan but I feel contrary to that. He was an Indian nationalist and wanted entire Indian nation to perform its best in all walks of life, especially Muslims to help understand their past and what they can and must do to become a useful tool in society. I firmly believe Pakistan was a creation of Britisher’s not Muslims. They deliberately created environment of hatred between Hindus and Muslims of Sub-Continent and promoted people from within India to help achieve their goals using divide and rule policy and later promoting want of power and greed among the then politicians. It was their own idea of creating a New World. The Indian population and masses were herded as sheep and goats.

Allama Iqbal addressed the very basic element of schooling and education. There must be millions of boys and girls from my age group who recited this nazm in their morning school assemblies. If you ask them they will tell you how much they believed in this most simple and beautiful dua/poem. No political, no religious motive behind this nazm….just a sheer wish, desire and the right of every child to become a good human being, serve and help his countrymen and achieve his or her dreams and live fullest of what life has to offer.

I am sure the tradition of singing and reciting this nazm/dua in Pakistani schools came from schools in U.P., India. I have never heard this dua with a background music so prepared one for myself. Actually it is more of a live playing and singing.

Following is an internet translation with minor edit:

May longing comes to my lips as supplication of mine O Allah!
May like the candle be the life of mine O Allah!

May the world’s darkness disappear through the life of mine!
May every place light up with the sparkling light of mine!

May my homeland through me attain elegance
As the garden through flowers attains elegance

May my life like that of the moth be, O Allah!
May I love the lamp of knowledge, O Allah!

May supportive of the poor my life’s way be
May loving the old, the suffering my way be

O Allah! Protect me from the evil ways
Show me the path leading to the good ways

Naqvi Sahab,

I saw your upload notification as I was about to break for a small lunch break and the new song name also intrigued my curiosity and I stopped by…… Lovely thoughts in this simple yet powerful poetry / dua / prayer. I can see young children singing this prayer before they start the school days…. reminded me of my early days when we used to sing similar prayers. Wish, people would learn some day to get along….

Wah Bhai Muzaffar, bahot khoobsurat dua gayee hai, bachpan mein le gaye…. Sir Mohammad Iqbal remains in India both a controversial and revered figure. To nationalists he is the misguided intellectual progenitor of Pakistan; but to many lovers of poetry he is one of India’s greatest 20th century poets, perhaps next only to Rabindranath Tagore. There are controversies about him….but whatever…….he was a great great poet. Bachpan mein main Delhi mein Ramjas Higher Secondary School mein padta thaa, wahan par roz subah prayer bola karte thay, “Wah Shakti hamein do daya nidhay Kartavya marg par dat jayein”……mere khayal se ye bhi Sir Iqbal ki likhee huee hai.
Muzaffar Bhai, bahot shukriya aapne mehnat se iska track banaya aur is dua ko pyaar se gaakar sunaya. Aapke hoonar ko SALAAM!
Keep singing,
Best wishes,

Wah Naqvi saab….I read your introduction to this post and I also agree that the partition was the brain child of the British …. unfortunately it became a reality due to the agreement of a few leaders like Gandhiji and Jinnah saab.

I am new to this poet but your gayaki and the soul which it conveyed was just awesome. Even I used to stand in assemblies and sing with others joining the lead singers who were singing into the mic…and the worst thing was that these lead singers were horrible when it came to sur and thaal….LOL. They were the teachers favourites so they got to sing into the mic every day morning….:)

Also kudos for making such a beautiful BGM on your own….shows your passion for this nagma and it reflected in your rendition….loved it sir

I too believe that Great people like Iqbal can never think narrow!!…I fully endorse your views about him….it is the fanatic and political minds that uses such people unethically to achieve their goals……even today this great poets song is sung as our National song in India!!

Naqvi sahab… kya ghazab dhaaya… kheench ke mujhe seedhe mere school ke dino le gaye jab har Thursday ko hum ye dua assembly mein gaate the… what days those were! Ab mujhe apni assembly prayer book khojni padegi jisme aur bhi aisi kaeen prayers thee jo mujhe bohat hi azeez hain…:D If you don’t mind, please send me this superb bgm you put together for this prayer. I would love to sing and share it with some of my school time buddies who I am sure will love it…haha!!
As for your other thoughts around the partition… couldn’t agree more! The British certainly were the primary culprits… that said, the naivety of the general masses (which continues to this day unfortunately) that allows them to be manipulated by these sorts of political forces with extremely vested interests is no less responsible. God knows when the common man of India and Pakistan will finally realize this and stand up for humanity and not communal-ism, caste-ism and many other “isms” that have hampered the progress of both nations. Amen!!

Wonderful singing Naqvi ji and what great lyrics…!
Thanks for the translation.
Loved your beautiful introduction and the healthy thread on those lines in the various comments of our friends here. I am sure but for this great music forum, such a good, healthy and cordial friendship would not have got nurtured between many connoisseurs and music enthusiasts like all of us from these two countries of the sub continent. Times are changing and I am sure more wisdom would start prevailing upon the minds of people of both the countries.

I knew only the great song – Sare jahan se acha Hindustan hamara associated with the name of this great poet Mohamed Iqbal. This song was so popular during my school days even in the remote southern part of India where Hindi was not popular. (But I think it has vanished from schools and school functions now, I am not sure). Thanks for your very informative write up which threw more light on him.

Quite an enriched and melodious prayer song that blossomed with perfect sublimeness and purity in your serene voice.

Kind regards,

Vinod You are absolutely right in saying such great people can never be narrow minded.

Giri Bhai I am so glad to know you are familiar with Saare Jahan Se Achha. You touched my nerve pointing this nazm. Philosophers like Iqbal wouldn’t change their ideology over a span of couple of years. His statements were skewed by the Zamindars who prevailed in Pakistan after this system was to be abolished in India. Off course narrow mindedness made him a national poet in Pakistan and consequently ignored in India….that’s why you don’t hear his poems much in India.

Rajesh Bhai khushi huee aapko passand aaya.

Srini Yes Harshan’s comment made me smile too….and if you read some other friends too.

Thank you so much Hemanth. Dr. Iqbal has several ghazal/nazms and other poetry volumes to his credit. Very dynamic and an eye opener type of a poet he was.
