Ilayanila - Our musical moon and the boon! - Ilayaraja/SPB - Cover by Arvind

Lyrics & Chords

Such a great timeless melody composed by the one and only Maestro … but sung by all!.
Although we received this song some 28 years ago, I still cannot get over it!.

I slowed it down a bit in my humble attempt to enjoy it more and hopefully you like the outcome!.

Greats are Greats! Nothing more to add!

Thanks for listening and please do leave your comments.

Very nicely done! :) I liked the idea behind your extra sangathis. Liked your “adhu mazhayo” :) very much.

Just felt that the classical touch could have been suppressed in the charanams.

So nice to see so many IR covers in the past few days……Inda isai mazhai “Idhayam varai nanaigirathey”

Arvind,Gosh,it takes real guts to even think of improvising such an iconic number…….Kudos……and you know have come out with flying colors in rendering too……some places are really cool and unexpected like the second pallavi and second charanam…….Yeah,if you could have pulled of in the higher tempo……this will be at a different level…….over all it was thrilling :)enjoyed it….

Excellent, Arvind….improvisations well done and good feel….at some parts you sounded very much like SPB

Anil – thanks kindly!.

Adithi – Thanks and glad you liked it. Classical touches were not intentional, just tried to maintain a flow!.

Vishnu Mohan – Thanks and glad you felt that there was a style variation that you liked.

Kumaran – Thanks and glad it went down well for you … what more can I ask! :-)

Ajay – I suspect most of us have sung this mega hit song for audiences at some stage!. Glad you liked my little ‘venture’!

Subbu – This song is so ingrained in most of us that I wanted to give some light touches for a different grain … glad you thought my attempt was worthy. You are a keen observer and I thought your comment was a notable one!. Regarding the tempo its a catch 22 … if it was faster then it is not easy to pull off the variations convincingly … at least for me!. Original recording tempos are always comfortably paced to extract maximum nuances without losing the tempo feel … it’s a fine art and MDs like MSV and Ilayaraja, who did a lot of live recordings, are geniuses at this. Thanks Subbu.

Tara – Thanks and I guess you did not read my title brief about this song. Cheers.

Tailgunner – Thanks and I am sure you would have mastered this song on your guitar?!. Envy you guys who can play an instrument properly!. Cheers.

I am very much familiar with this song …thanks to many covers on this site and also reminds me of kishoreda’s neele neele ambar pe.

Coming to your rendition, loved your singing as always with that voice of yours. Just felt you could have used some softness while saying Ilayanila. There was the signature laugh which is so beautiful, while adhering to the sur aspect. One of the best covers of this song, I have heard till date ….awesome breath control buddy ….keep it up. LOVED it and to my favs.

very nice Arvind, as usual.
Obviously as one of the millions who idolized SPB growing up, this was one of the gems to listen and savor repeatedly.
Liked the improvisations and your great control on what I consider some tough parts of the song.

Sing and Be Merry!

Arvind….simply superb.
my favourite song all time sans doubt.
sounded like SPB on a stage show……the subtle improvisations……loved it.
tempo could have been the original….guess that i ahve heard it faster so many times thats the original is not replacable in my mind. 3:32 — 3:35 could have been better.
my only complaint is that the emotion of the song was a tad less…….couldnt picture ur song with a smiling Mohan and a disgusted S V Shekar.
i never get bored of listening to this song. u r such an awesome singer and i loved listening to this one in ur style.

I totally echo ur sentiment “Although we received this song some 28 years ago, I still cannot get over it!.” I hope I never ever get OVER this song.

My humble request for u “Ithu oru pon malai” whenever u get the time. looking forward to ur other uploads.

Hats off, I loved your rendition a lot. This is one song which inspires you a lot. A gem composition. Only thing I felt was that Ilayanila could have been sung with a little bit of softness…and the meghaaaam stretch after anupallavi was sounding a bit odd. But awesome singing.

Very nice song to pick.
Enjoyed the different style of delivering it.
“paruva nila……” @ 1.46 was very enjoyable.
anga inga added sangathies was different and very nice.
But you could have avoided the “haaAAAA” @3.29
well its just that it gave me a thought that I am listening to a classical song that’s why.
But totally enjoyed it :)

Hello Mr.Arvind,

I was waiting for this song in your voice and
atlast you have done it,thanks man.I don’t get
bored of listening to this wonderful piece
composed by ‘The Everlasting Supremo’ Isaignani
Dr.iLayaraja and rendered by our lord.

Nice singing brother with beautiful expressions
and too too too much of improvisations, lol.
Already many have commented upstairs about the
issues in your rendition,so dont want to
repeat it again.
I felt that you were not at ease in the high
notes vaanaveedhiyil mega oorvalam,kaaNum
podhile aarudhal tarum and same in the 2nd
charaNam neelavaanile veLLiodaigaL,odugiNdrade
enna jaadaigaL,may be due to too much of
improvisations,in my opinion.
Otherwise i enjoyed it in your voice and you
have sung odugiNdrade enna jaalangaL,its
jaadaigaL.Please ignore it,if iam wrong.
All the best and enjoy singing.

Harshan, Venki, Vishak … thanks a lot for listening and commenting … much appreciated and I appreciate your sentiments. Thanks again.

Sowmya … Cannot have a more appreciating music lover than you … I think you enjoyed this more than even what I did when I sang it!. Really happy that you liked it a lot … I guess a versatile artist like you can pick out the finer points for inspection and enjoyment!. Thanks.

Rahul, Biju and Roshnie, thanks a lot and appreciated your comments.

Srini … thanks for your detailed comment and it is appreciated v.much. Jazz Blues scale is totally about improvisation and these kind of songs although masterfully composed lend themselves to interpretation. Nothing ventured nothing gained. You could be right about Jaadaigal (oops!) … my own lyric there but in the same spirit. Thanks Srini.

Excellent rendition and fresh interpretation of this classic. I enjoyed most of your improvisations – liked the last repetition of the pallavi the most.

There is some thing odd about the K-track, seems to be wavering very slightly in pitch; was especially evident at the start of the first interlude and the ending guitar sequence. Your singing was fine though.

good singing…. i loved the way you reproduced this…. i liked the small small improvisations that you did also…

if we sing any spb/hariharan song, its bit tough…. they used to put some natural sangathi’s and its really challenging to make a cover version for their songs….

good effort…. i enjoyed it…. keep singing!!!
