Ilaya nila by ilaya Raja - Miracle - SPB -- Cover
Lyrics & Chords
Raja n SPB is the best combination ever possiblle, lot many songs can be listed to prove this and Ilayanila tops the list.Heard from few musician friends When they learn Guitar when filmy musicians come for auditions to the colleges in search of Guitarists,The first and last test they ask them to under go is to play first interlude of Ilayanila !SPB in Asianet channel interview mentioned that,The Guitarist took 16 takes to complete this song recording… Ofcourse Raja might have composed this in no less than 16 minutes…:D Who knows??? Such a Ratchas lol
Love to sing this song, tried some chorus too, hope it didn’t spoil the soup.

Very interesting pick, Sowmya! I admire the way you venture to do covers of songs sung by male singers.
As always, enjoyed your expressive singing. Some places were slightly pitchy. Also, the “kaaNume” sounded as “kaanume”….
Enjoyable cover! :)

Very bold attempt. Liked the mixing of chorus & that different singing of MSV’s style adopted towards the end of the song. Superb. Mind-blowing. Pointer as far as I could listen with my zebronics head-set is the punch u gave while singing, Vaaname at the beginning. I wish it was sung softly. Its my opinion and u gave it in ur own & unique style. Hats off.

A mellow fruit suggesting that it tastes sweeter than a tangy alternative?!. A song that generally draws the vibrancy out of any singer in a manner that even the lyrics are overlooked due to the compelling music magically woven by the Beethoven of India. Only a genius could write such music as far ranging from Western Classical to Blues to Rock to Indian folk music!. Thiruvasagam is I think just a little resting place for the mountain of music that stopped erupting as an everyday occurrence. Some were stunned by the long passages of music in Thiruvasagam but after hearing our loving “Ilayanila” is it any surprise!?.
Sowmya, when a man cooks a curry it is usually on the spicy side and when a female cooks it she makes sure that it is palatable to all. Likewise your singing is sweet fodder to the ears to the extent that the lyrics come to prominence. Vairamuthu has described the sky and the moon and the stars in grand style and I really enjoyed the lyrics through your singing. Thanks for slowing down the song for us a bit to express yourself extra melodically through which the lyrics shone. It truly is a masterpiece by Vairamuthu … lines like “vaanaveedhiyil mega oorvalam….” really are very imaginative and beautifully subtle fit for any King!.
Everything was great about your singing and voice and the chorus that you gave in the background was quite nice too.
If I were to be picky I would say that:
- singing tempo in first charanam starting lines were slow and was not tight with the beat.
- your diction involving the big “Naa” as we know is a problem yet to be overcome.
- Your bass was a bit subdued and did not come out as well as I thought it could have … words like “ILayanila” should have a bass kickoff to make it sound punchy combined with perfect note precision … a bit more perfection could be aimed for I felt. The problem is we tend to sing these kind of mega hit songs without in depth analysis as we have heard it a thousand times … however there are some intricate nuances that SPB gives in his live singing that are quite notable and worthy of attention.
- the Chorus part to me sounded like a Strings accompaniment to the singing … instead I would have used the chorus as a filler in between the lines … for example there is adequate gap between Ilayanila and Pozhigiradhey … I would have used chorus to perk up that gap rather than along with the singing like you have done.
- the ending turu turu along with the guitar was not in perfect pitch and I feel this is not necessary … I would rather hear the guitar which was pretty good in your track.
I liked your style and the feminine version was laid back and gave us this song to full potency!.
Awesome effort!.

I fully endorse Arvind’s views about this performance. He is just perfect in his observation. Good learning.
Only IR can bring out such a wonderful compositions. Such compositions are milestones in Indian music industry. Imagine this IR’s effort is about 25 years old. Still we are not yet completed our explorations!
Thanks for reminding this ever green number.
Keep it up.

Evergreen song, well sung by you Sowmya. You obviously enjoyed singing this and I enjoyed listening :-). Adding the chorus was a nice idea – sounded good.
Agree with others about KaaNume sounding as Kaanume in several places.
