Gems of Madan Mohan/Lata - Naina Barse(1964)

Lyrics & Chords

Naina Barse Rim Jhim – Woh Kaun Thi (1964)
Music : Madan Mohan
Lyrics : Raja Mehndi Ali Khan
Singer: Lata Mangeshkar

This haunting melody needs no introduction. Pre-climax scene in the horror flick/suspense thriller Woh Kaun Thi, with a beautiful Sadhana roaming as a wailing spirit singing wistfully in search of her lost lover. Sung ever so beautifully by Lataji, this is one of the immortal gems from the Madan Mohan/Lata/Raja Mehndi Ali Khan creative treasure-trove.

Recently, Ananya covered this song in her beautiful voice. Was reminded of this song then…
Here is my take at it – I have added some minor variations and my own expressions at some harkats. Thanks to Harshan for his review of my latest take, I have incorporated some of his tips. Hope you all enjoy this.
Do drop in your valuable feedback.

I had to listen when I saw the upload notification… I love this song ( the song is there in Tamizh too… now you know why! :)

So good to hear your version of it, liked the way you put your heart and soul into anything you sing Sudha! Guess that matters most…loved it!

Thanks a ton Rahul and Meera. That was super-quick! :-) Glad you both enjoyed this!
@Rahul – Harshan instructed me specifically not to try any improv stunts in the beginning alaap, however the track (Anirrudh karaoke ;-)) had some different chords in the start, had to do some tweaking! :-)
@Meera – Gotta hear the Tamizh wailer from you then! Thanks so much. :-)
Lemme guess the lyrics “Kanneer Vazhinjudhu”

Sudha!! There is a tamizh equivalent for this wailer… :) It goes ,‘Naaney varuvaen’ and not ‘KaNNeer vazhinjathu’… :D No clue about the incorporation of your ideas as I have not listened to the original… But I have rightly started calling you, ‘the nightingale of muziboo’ since your preference goes with Lathji’s songs… And one nitpick I wish to bring to your kind notice – avoid infusing tremolos very often as it imparts a different mood to the rendition… In this cover, the tremolos were intentional and given the gist, it gelled well… Oru malayaLam song paadi post paNNaen… :)) Would love to listen to your voice undertaking a softer number… Will you??

Beautiful choice of Madan Mohanji’s award-winning composition perfectly rendered by you maintaining the original mood !
LOVED your voice & expressions especially the improvisations !
Standing ovation to your good self !
Sure, this also goes to my FAVOURITES !
The Hindi version was the original & Vedha had copied all the tunes from “Woh Kaun Thi” for the corrersponding songs of the Tamizh version “Yaar Nee” starring Jayashankar & Jayalalitha which had been released only years later.
GOD Bless !
Loving Best Wishes,
Thinkal Govind Kumar.

Thanks dear friends for listening and all your appreciative f/bs on my attempt. Glad you enjoyed overall.
@Raj, Sarmi – Thanks. Yes! aware of the tremolo, but I did the controlled vibratos here to add to the feel – perhaps it was too much? Raj, have sung soft Mallu song…
@Govindji – Thanks a lot for the info about the Tamizh version. Really appreciate your warm f/b.
@Suresh – Thanks so much for those good words.
@Rajesh- Thanks. don’t agree with your slip timestamps. Funny why no one else pointed out…
@Sarmi – no bars or notches ok? Just singing for pleasure yaar… :-)
@Swati – Thank you for being spooked. ;-) Actually, my lil one got spooked, and slept with us. I had to accomplish recording while she was napping… :-)
Thanks all,

It took me 18 days to reach this lovely rendition Sudha. Of course nothing much left to say, goes to Favs!!

But yes One takeway for you :-) . Check your noise gate that you used, it is giving a vibrato effect to your entire song on your singing portions (applied more than needed). K-Track is superb, but do check your vocal track plugins, I may be wrong, so please let me know offline if I am, for my knowledge purpose.

Have a listen to Rafi Sharddhanjli

Thanks Rashmi and Harry.
@Harry – I know, I don’t have great recording conditions at home, let alone rec gear and settings. I’m so glad you recognized the difference between the input and the output (rec. settings). Will really to check with you and some others offline on these fine tunings. Thanks buddy. :-)
