Celebrating ShankarabharaNam - 1 - E teeruga (cover version) with Murali Venkatraman
Lyrics & Chords
Write up by Murali Venkatraman, but on my space :)
Sabhaku Namaskaaram.
It may not be wrong to call the movie shankarabharaNam as the crowning jewel among the works of composer Shri K. V. Mahadevan. It was a movie that simply established that in the midst of light music, one could really be left captivated by classical music if presented appropriately with a good story-line (by director K Vishwanath) . Although KVM had worked magic all through his telugu and tamil movies (e.g SwatikiraNam, thiruviLaiyaadal ), he made a remarkable choice of a singer in this movie. In all his earlier movies, he went for singers who were either partially trained (Susheela) or at the level of vidwan (Ghantasala, T. M. Soundararajan). In this movie, he picked S. P . Balasubramaniyam (who calls him that ? It is either SPB, SP or Balu) who was completely untrained and established that a committed effort to train him would provide rich dividends. SPB just grew from strength to strength and was associate with so many other films where he breezed through many classical and semi-classical compositions and both telugu and tamil music were never the same.
Science and Art cross barriers. An obscure researcher working quietly in a remote place like port of Madras, was recognized by the great mathematician Hardy only to unveil the genius that was Ramanujan. Ramanujan knew nothing but math. But Hardy ensured that his work was recognized beyond doubt. Similarly for our country that has had many regional problems because of languages, music has often provided the much needed fabric of harmony. How would one explain KVM and SPB’s success then ? SPB – a native telugu speaker – is loved by tamils all over and KVM – a tamilian- whose reputation as a composer in Telugu is unmistakable. Other greats like MSV, IR, Susheela, Janaki, Chitra, and Yesudas and now Rehman have similar reputations. The beauty of Telugu seems to be locked in the fact that it is heavily derived from sanskrit but slanted in a delivery which is southern. In a way it ideally represents a good blend of the North and South Indian elements in sync. Malayalam is another language which has a similar blend although it is softer on most syllables than Telugu.
In an effort to recall and celebrate 30 years since the release of the movie, I team up with my friends ( Meera, Narayanan, Vidya, Adithi and may be some more) to re-do some of the songs in the movie as a tribute. Some songs will be rendered as they were in the movie and some with slight modifications in arrangements. Some of us are not native telugu speakers but have sincerely tried for dictional accuracy by consulting with telugu speaking friends. Despite our best efforts, if there be errors we sincerely apologize.
The first song in this series is “E teeruga nanu” – a classical composition of Bhadrachala Ramadas who may be called the tamil equivalent of Manikkavaasagar. Both were state-servants who out of their devotion towards their deities,, used up the state money for charity and religious causes. Both were great poets and singers and have left a wealth of literature for us to indulge. This song appeared in a truncated form in the movie. Hence when I created the Karaoke track, I took the liberty of expanding the song to include the last paragraph of the original. In the movie, the song was delivered by the inimitable Vani Jeyaram. In here, we present this as a duet with some extra (hopefully) un-infringing phrases. I find that the raga of the song is either Nadanamakriya or Mayamalawagowla. I am not very sure about the differences between these two. The lyrics of the song were obtained from this link and they are provided here for your reference:
E teeruga nanu daya jUcedavO ina vaMSOttama rAmA
nA taramA Bhava sAgara meedanu naLinadaLEkshaNa rAmA |E teeruga….|
Sree raghu naMdana seetA ramaNA Sritajana pOShaka rAmA

krUra karmamulu nEraka cEsiti nEramuleMcaku rAmA

vAsavanuta rAmadAsa pOShaka vaMdanamayOdhya rAmA
dAsArcita mAkaBhayamosaMgave dASarathee raghu rAmA |E teeruga….|
Please let us know how you feel about this song and also about the rest of the series to come.

Awesome pick guys and brilliant performance by both of you. I don’t have words to express the happiness to listen to this song in your voices. Kudos to both of you for choosing this one.
Meera, these lines have some minor issues with pronounciation and diction.
krUra karmamulu – it sounded like krura karmamunu
nEraka cEsiti nEramuleMchaku – it sounded like neramuleRchaku rAmA
dAridryamu – there is no “H” in Daridryam
parihAramu sEyave daiva SikhAmaNi – there is no “H” in Sikhamani
rAmA |E teeruga…|
Other than that its an absolute treat to ears.

krUra karmamulu- was sung as karmamu"l"u not ’n"u
nEraka cEsiti nEramuleMchaku – It was sung as nEramuleNTs/caku rAma since I was given to b’ve that it was to be done that way :D
dAridryamu – there is no “H” in Daridryam. Sorry, breath got in the way I suppose.
parihAramu sEyave daiva SikhAmaNi – there is no “H” in Sikhamani
rAmA- Sang it as sikha initially and had to change it to Shikha :)))
Thanks for the pointers, will keep these in mind for future Telugu renditions.

@Meera: think you had the neramulenchaku part a little wrong……Agree with the neramulents/chaku part you have pointed. But the problem seemed to be before you get to the tsaku part. the len I think you have pronounced as lEn. There is no deergam.
Doesnt stop from going into my favs and a 5/5.

Meera and Murali,
The movie Shankarabharam is a class in itself I heard people over the years use expressions like ‘Na Bhooto Na Bhavishyati’ or alighnment of stars (both astrological and Tollywood) that made this movie a reality, etc. And, songs of that movie made me (and I am sure score of others in Andhra land) reconnect with classical music strong enough to actually go to a teacher and try to learn it.
Coming to the present song here, Amazing voices and terrific mixing. Your expansion of the song with your humming of Raama (the slight straying from the original) has in fact beautified the song, in my opinion. Other have already pointed out a few issues with Telugu words pronounciation… Not something that you cannot address in other songs. Love to hear more.
Best,
Ravi

Just Divine to the level of the infinity dear Chechi and bro Murali.
This rendition definitely is one of the IMMACULATE and IMMORTAL renditions and surely will elevate the finite consciousness of a soul to transcend to the level of infinite consciousness of God – Super Soul (Paramatma).
Amazing and Wonderful Chechi – Krishna’s Meera and Krishna’s Murali, wonderful rendition from the heart and soul.
Soul stirring praise of Lord Rama indeed. It indeed feels like the synchronization of Radha and Krishna singing in tandem about Lord Vishnu’s seventh incarnation of Rama.
Know that Lord Hanuman was pervading all through the song in full devotion for this servitor of God along with Sita and Rama.
Both of you gave it the perfect feel and poured your soul into it.
Here’s something that came to my heart in Kannada while listening to the song:
###############################################
Ah….Brahmanda Kotiya Udara Dolege Pasarisida Paramatma Nine….Veda gallelu Shrutitide….
4 (Nalku) Vedas, 6 (Aaru) Shastras, 18 (Haneradu) Puranas ninannu kondadisutane….ooooo….Maryada Purushottam Rama….
“Shri Ram, Jai Ram Jai Jai Ram”
###############################################
It goes into my favorites and surely Lord Hanuman’s favourite list too.
Infinity/5 for this rendition to both of you. Both of you were at par and in divine sunchronization all the way because of the high level grace passed on to you two during the rendition of the song.
Murali very good write up, it shows your Bhakti (devotion) to this field. Stay the same always.
Chechi Meera I am a divine fan of hers along with you also Murali :)
I wish you good luck and pass on blessings and grace so that you succeed in your humble attempt to show casing the wonderful divine renditions of Shankarabharanam Movie and also masterpieces from Tyagaraja in your own divine creativity graced upon you two by Lord Krishna and Maata Saraswati.
Take Care both you divine souls,
Keep the faith always,
Peace be with you two,
God Bless You two and all your beloved ones….

As a kid, my Granpa used to make me watch this movie a gazillion times :) So I’m familar with some of the songs. I think you’ve rendered this song beautifully. Nothing to point out there. From a mix perspective, it sounds too sharp. Also looks like your panned Murali’s vocals. I would have kept that at the center itself. Sounds kinda odd this way. Meera, your voice in general is sharp and thin and if you are not careful in the mixing process, it can very easily sound nasal. Something you need to watch out for.

Fantastic……Just Fantastic……The idea by itself is very noble. Hats off for that.
Coming to the song….It was very very Serene and Pure… I loved it all the way. Some diction issues were pointed out already. I’m not going to go there.
I will let you know some that were not said. Not to take anything away from the rendition but just to let you know for future renditions.
@Murali:
1. The line below:
Sree raghu naNdana seetA ramaNa….
and it is Sritajana with “Sri”. I heard it as “Srutajana”. I may be wrong but just a pointer.
2. In the last stanza….
dAsArcita mAkaBhayamosaNgave…
The second word is actually 3 different words….
mAaku….aBhayamu and osaNgave…. the line means O! Dasarathee….the one who is worshipped by Dasas….Grant us the wish(the Abhayam). When you say it combined, it should sound like….“mAkaBhayamosaNgave”. So you should say it as ……“mA”…. “kaBhayamosangave”…
Don;t know if i made sense @ all.
The way you pronounced was very odd and i could not understand it initially.
One Suggestion:
===
The Rama humming might have sounded great if you have included more voices.
Overall excellent project and super rendition. 5/5 and looking forward for more….

Dear all,
Thanks to everyone who has taken their time to check out our work. Your encouragement is our impetus for the oncoming work.
Vamsi and Narayan:
Your pointers are well received. Although I ensured that I got my pronunciation corrected with Narayan, I somehow missed to ask him the proper enunciation and if the way to split the words are correct. Vamsi’s explanation is very clear. Before we set foot on the next song in this series, I shall ask the singers to consult you guys (if you are free) and then deliver. After all, if sangeetam (music) is the atma (soul), sahityam (lyrics) is the jeevan (life).
Vamsi – I have indeed sung it as sri and not sru. But I have failed to split the maakabhayam properly.
George :
Thanks for your input on the mix. I think Meera has uploaded a corrected file now.

Wonderful memories down the time.
I am a Kannadiga, and do not understand Talugu. But Shankarabharanam music crossed the barrier for the time in terms of films music. I don’t know any Kannadiga who has not heard Shakarabharnam songs during those days. Because of the songs, the movie of a superhit in the interiors of Karnataka too, where people hardly understood Telugu. Till now, I have Shankarbharanam songs in my MP3 player (from analog to digital, the songs remain the same).

This is one of fav song. Beauty of this song, I feel, is the minimal use of instruments with just voice hanging in the air – basically the singer should take you there……and sure you guys did just that.
Keep up the good work!

Hi Meera ji,
I heard all your songs till your latest update ‘Snegidhanae’. Among all these, I felt this as your BEST. Your extra fittings in this song was at its best. It is more pleasing to hear and relieves the pressure in us. The clarity in your voice is great in this song.
IMO, your voice looks great with these kind of soft songs.
