Mystery behind Poongaatru- ... Lyrics & Chords
This is one of the greatest compositions of Ilaiyaraja Sir and I have a conviction that he has tuned this during his happiest times. Something inspires me each time I hear this song and the lyrics provide different feel and concepts each time. I would describe this as a ‘Mystery Song’ (Puthiraanathu) and the theme of mystery has been portrayed well through the background score, thanks to the Maestro. I loved the way the song starts with the galloping of a horse being admired by Sri Devi and Kamal Haasan carrying her on his shoulders like a horse… Yes, Kamal ji yaanai illa guthirai thaan appdinu enniko prove pannirukaaru… While this movie got released, Kamal Haasan was already a big star in Hindi and Tamil industry and this was the year when I started to breathe my first poongaatru in 1982… Actress Sri Devi has outsmarted the hero throughout this movie. This is the best performance I’ve ever seen of Sri Devi, thanks to Balu Mahendra for such a wonderful script where the heroine really had a dominant role and scope to play. It’s not very easy to play the role of an insane girl and simultaneously maintaining the cuteness, charm and the beauty. All the more, the co-star was like her sibling who also graduated from the AVM School of cine arts where both used to fight and play right from the childhood. He is a very simple actor and looks like my younger brother even at his old age and no one on earth would know of this ‘Ulaga Nayagan’. If Sri Devi required the whole movie in length to dominate, Kamal Haasan would just require 5 to 10 minutes of this movie at the climax to equate her performance. Many may dislike this legendary actor for his personal life attributes (as if we will be happy if someone comments about our personal lives), but all would love him for one good reason that he knows to act (Meyyaalumey Nadikka Therintha Kalaignan). Ilaiyaraja sir must have been highly energetic to produce this rejuvenating tune, background music score being at its best in this song. I never felt conscious about my voice or singing and rather enjoyed rendering this song because I whole heartedly loved the music and the lyrics and the way it’s being sung by Jesudas in an inimitable style. I’ve sang this with words ‘Puthithaanathu’ and ‘Puthiraanathu’ at places as heard in the original by KJY… I would say I just spoke rather than sing, because of the background music that I actually enjoyed and got diverted each time I attempt to sing. I just wanted to deliver some song for this New Year and thought this song would be okay and did it in very short time. I accept tomatoes, stones and eggs if you wish for having marred the beauty of this song, but omelettes or half-boiled please. And I take this opportunity to wish you all a happy Bisu, Bihu, Visu, Baisakhi and Vikruthi Tamizh Puthaandu.

Glad to be back here again, Dwarak! Was thinking a lot about this song after listening to it for the first time.
I was very upset that Sridevi did not win “Oorvashi” award for this movie as she was fabulous in it. Appram the tune was probably a prelude to Raaja’s peppy number many years later perhaps with a different mood. If you hummed the interlude, you could easily be lead to the Charanam of “Valaiyosai”….:)
Timing in this song is very tricky so some more work to do on the timing front. Mattrapadi very good singing :)

Yup I watched the cheenu’s climax performance on youtube even yesterday and he’s a typical performance oriented actor and strives to outperform his previous performances. That’s the reason I insist he’s the real horse and I am very sure that Rajinikanth sir would have all his praise for Kamal ji. And yes, timing issues innum irukku but I would work on that in future. Sridevi kitta Oorvashiya pesa solliduvom ka. Yes, I agree with ur observation about ‘Valaiyosai’ song. Appreciate your effort to let me know of timing issues.

Very well sung….Only timing issues…… How do u record? In Audacity? Cos I also get this same problem….While singing vth ktrack it will be totally fine….But when I export without Ktrack then there will be timing issue…. Latency problem…. Adu adjust panna seri aagum…. Check whether u also had the same problem…. Song paadinadu porutha varai sooper….and dubbing part sooopero sooper :)

This song, shooting and the whole movie brings a lot of memory again since it was shot in Keti(close to Ooty), Kotagiri(home town). My friend used to live in Keti and we used to walk down those railway tracks….
