Yamuna Veruthey ( cover version) from Ore Kadal
Yamuna Veruthey ( cover ver... Lyrics & Chords
Covering a Malayalam number on Muziboo for the first time. My audioblog has quite a few in this language in the last 3 years since I started audioblogging.
Credit goes to Roshini for suggesting this song, taking the pains to send me the original and the an awesome k-track to back it with :) If not for you, I don’t think I would have listened to this song, and I ended up adoring it so much that I jumped my line of songs to do this one first LOL. This song goes out to you Rosh, and thanks for requesting this!!
The movie Ore Kadal ( a totally off beat film with brilliant performances by both Meera Jasmine and Mamootty, the former earning a Shantaram’s National Award & Kerala State Award) has music scored by Ouseppachan (earning a Kerala State award as well). Interesting tidbit about this album is that, all songs are in the raagam Subha Pantuvaraali, probably one of the most frequently used, to depict pathos/sadness/despair.
I know there are a lot of non-Malayalam speakers in Muziboo, who still take the interest and time to listen, so here is a short description of what the song is about to help make your listening experience better.
“Yamuna Veruthey” is about a woman who longs for her lover who has deserted her. She equates herself to Yamuna and her lover to Krishna also known as Nandalala (one of the many names Krishna is referred to by). So, there goes the general picture :) Add a lot of sadness and despair to the feel of the song and this is bound to be haunter. Don’t forget to listen to the original by Shweta Mohan, D/O singer Sujatha.
Song: Yamuna Veruthey
Movie: Ore Kadal
Music by :Ouseppachan
Original by: Shweta Mohan
Although I have native roots which lead to Kerala soil, I can probably speak or read Malayalam only in my dreams. So, here’s an anticipatory bail to the pronounciation part :-)
Appreciate those of you who are going to be patient in listening and moreso to those who are tolerant to the pronounciation and still keep listening :)) Pointers are welcome, since this is a language that I am still trying to get a hang of!

Expressions are good Meera. Somehow singing did not reach my heart. I felt the initial pallavi needed to be better grounded (hrudaya gaanam). It seemed like you warmed up int he middle of the song.
Or may be I am listening after a tiring day’s work and my judgment is marred.

Brilliant expressions, Meera! It is such a tough song and yet you have sung it with great ease.
Just a few observations:
- wondering if the effect would have been better if the shruthi were a tad lower.
- You may need to pay more attention to some sangathis(eg. very last “paadi”).
- You adherence to shruthi is just stunning!
Thanks for the treat!

Good singing Meera. You have sung this song well and I don’t know if it is the language, but I felt that the longing of lover was not truly felt. I think perhaps it is because your voice in this song was too nasal and not so open throated.

Thanks all for the comments, tips and suggestions. Truly appreciate it.
Murali & Jo: Will take your comment seriously and work harder the next time I do Malayalam. It not being my mother tongue is not helping in the diction I suppose :D
Adithi: this is trifle lower than the original, the original was a tad too high for me :)) Thanks for the note on the ending sangathis. Will sure keep that in mind for my future renditions.
Cheers,

Meera,
Explanation helped a lot in getting the exact mood of the song. Very well sung by you, it doesn’t sound like you are struggling with pronunciation. Felt little nasally at times, may be it’s the mixing. But i loved your expressions.

Meera, It took some time for me to reach here. But yeah, as they say Better late than never.
As usual, you have sung it very nice. Liked it very much. But I felt the same Jo had pointed out. But I love your singing :)

Meera,
I thought you sang this very well, but maybe not to your own potential. The expressions (the feeling of pain especially) would have been portrayed better if you sang certain parts of this song open throated. The start could have been better. You did sound a little nasaly. Could be eq settings. For the most part diction/accent was not a problem.
So in short, this is very good, but the above pointers will give it the extra shine!

Thanks Dhiraj, Arun and George.
Dhiraj: Nasality has crept in here and there. Will remix and see if that works.
George: For the nasality, will try to remix and see if that gets taken care of. Open throated has always been a challenge for me. I tried it in urugudhae, but didn’t try it too much in this. Guess I will have to work on that part constantly.

Very good rendition. Appreciate your diction.
You have rendered this with very good feel. I liked the way you modulated your voice in certain lines like ‘oru novu paattin….’. Keep up the good work.

Very good singing Meera. Can’t flaw the technique or the modulations etc., they are all very good. I think you have most of the aspects covered.
What I am about to say should be taken in the right sense please … what is lacking is singing from below your throat. Somehow you need to bellow it up from below rather than from the throat if I can put it that way. It sounds thin from the throat and expressions do not get the right spacious sound.
It is easy to resign and say “that’s my voice, take it or leave it” … if it was as simple as that I would not comment this. I sincerely feel that you need to open up somehow and make your lungs feel heard. It will be awesome then and your technique and modulations will blow up 10 fold. I would give this priority if I were you.
Thanks for putting up with a long comment….hey … in my case I believe it is the opposite….I need to improve technique and modulations!.
Hey guys leave a comment for me too! hehe……

Meera: Thanks for pointing me to this one. Now, I have this urge to attempt this even though I know that I have some barriers to cross – language, expressions (not my cup of tea) :)
Regarding your singing, I liked the way you brought out the expressions for this song. Nandalala… aha… was nice. I have to agree about the open throated singing suggestion though I am not sure if that would have help maintain the feel. In any case, I enjoyed listening to this one.

Thanks Kiran!
Uthra: Glad you could enjoy it despite this being not a very good rendition singing wise…This was at a point when I wasn’t that much of an open throated singer. I have learnt a thing or two in the last 2 years that I have been on Muziboo :P
