The song itself is very difficult to sing. I think you have done well to imbibe the tune and then go improvising on it for quite a length. since this is your first attempt at improvising at such a length, I welcome wholeheartedly and commend it. One area where you could improve is bring out more phrases other than “snpmG” and “GMGMg” also.

While it is fine to attempt the “sa…Sa” octave shift, even Hariharan’s rendition is unconvincing at that point. Brutally speaking he sounds like a rat shrieking when caught in the hinges of a door. I wonder why in a composition of such class, Shri Ramesh Narayanan had to introduce this unnecessary octave shift which of course Hari had to comply with. I personally would certainly not have minded if you had left that out and brought out just the melody of the song.

Similarly I was expecting Kaushik to take up a minute or two in the rendition and improvise the way he would have liked. I believe he has chosen to underplay his contribution. Nonetheless a nice support.

Please share such pseudo-jam sessions. It breaks the monotony of listening to standard covers.

For the very first time, I stayed hesitant and felt ineligible to write anything in this page as this happens to be a distinct and diligent cover, bringing your classical civilization and its illumination to the fore… Could see your hard work in every note and you pulled this off very well… I was not aware of the original and happened to listen to Hariharan’s version this morning… A Real devilish attempt, I honestly felt on juxtaposing this and the other original version… Liked all those embellishments, improvisations and other essential technical parameters… There has been a sudden crest in the stream when you give out that hysteric screech… But understood from Murali’s comment that Hariharan’s version did carry that octave shift… Having dwelled in this version of yours for hours, I can visualize ‘Meera with a nimbus’… :D Great going here… Absolute cracker… Keep covering toughies as this… Good Luck!!

A song very close to my heart too – awesome creativity from you and Kaushik, loved this presentation. Thought the initial alaap and some of the kalpana swaras could be done with more of a hindustani touch as needed for this raag (felt traces of naatai crept in). Diction is very good for the most part – the stress on ’Pa’ribhavangal could be avoided. The harmony @madhasugandhamai was very refreshing. Kudos for the pick and the excellent presentation, salute you both on the tremendous effort you both have taken.

Meera: It is not easy to sing songs originally sung by male singers. Hats off to you for attempting such a song and that too a toughie! Lovely rendition! Harmony in the alaap was unexpected but sounded beautiful! ‘Thirayaai’ and virahadhramai (or some such word) variations were enjoyable. Liked the piano accompaniment. Did you use the chung cymbal?

This reminded me of “Senthamizh cholleduthu Bharathi kavidhayai naan padithen” by Rajkumar Bharathi (DD days) (same raaga, I guess).

On the improvement areas I wish to suggest, like Kumar, I too felt some alaaps and and brihas having a slight carnatic touch/influence whereas a more of hindustani approach would have suited this song better…just a nitpick…not to be taken as a criticism……I am not qualified to critique on a talented singer like you……

Yes Meera, I’ve already heard it on FB but it’s totally worth hearing every bit of this classic work from both you guys. You’ve immersed yourself into the song and the backing piano was soulful. Hats off to you and Kowsik. This is high quality stuff. I always relate to your voice to Bombay jaishree. Such a crisp, sharp and dynamic voice. I think it’s your best to date. I’m sure there will be more to come :).

Beautifully sung, Meera! I think this is your best solo till date after Kaatrin Mozhi. Very tasteful brigaas and improvs! I do agree with Murali about the usage of the phrases he mentioned. However, the swaras were all very beautifully done. Kaushik’s recital was amazing and I have become his fan!

The only scope for improvement would be the way you handle some sangathis (eg 3:58 alayu nee) to bring some smoothness into them.
