Kannodu Kaanbadhellaam (cover version)
Kannodu Kaanbadhellaam (cov... Lyrics & Chords
One of most popular numbers of ARR which introduced Nithyashree to the Tamizh Film music listeners. Needless to say, she was an instant hit, with a totally commanding voice and a classical base as a solid backing.
Now, that being said, this version of mine is not and was not intended to be a carbon copy of the original :)I have tried to bring in a softness to this rendition which I think the original lacked, no offense meant to Nithyasree fans out there! Some key components/sangathis have been retained intentionally, with some new ones being my interpretation based on the lyrics and/or the melody.
I hope you all like this version, and many thanks in advance for listening.

Meera ….I am familiar with this song sung by Nityashree …….I liked your softer version of this song ….not taking anything away from this wonderful rendition ….I would have loved it more if you could have rendered this with the power of the original.

I swear you are waaaaay better than Nithyasree. Her voice gets real squeaky in high pitches. Am assuming you have sung the song in the same pitch as the original.
Are u classically trained or something?

Beautiful is the word. I liked your renditon of this song, Mixing could have been a bit better, volume levels were not uniform. But your sangathis/gamakas were on the dot, excellent job on them. 4/5 from me.

Very nice, Meera. This was one of the earliest karaokes I did in my previous life (with regard to recording techniques lol) Recorded along with the original on a music system, using the karaoke button to suppress Nityashree’s voice…. (http://octaves.blogspot.com/2007/01/when-recording-meant-nothing-more-than.html) this song brought back memories of that experience :)
But for some small mismatches between swaram and swarasthaanam in the swaras at the end, you’ve done a great job, as always!
Narayanan Raju said
Very nicely sung Meera…….as was pointed out already some swarams seemed just a tad out of place……otherwise it was well rendered.

Meera,
I have not been a fan of the original version of “Kannodu” but you made this song sound very pleasant with your very own singing style.
I honestly feel this song sounded like a beautiful pathos to me, may be it lacks the required energy and enthusiasm.
I am sure you have the potential to make it energetic and more entertaining… some thing like “Singara Velane Deva”

Other than that only one more observation : You are more melodious than nithyashree. It is a plus in Sahityam and a minus in the swarams. Swarams mattum innum konjam adichchu azuththamaa paadu.
Extremely tiring week…and now it is weekend…and your rendition was a balm for the battered mind.

Thank you all for those wonderful, encouraging comments.
Tara: The panning was intentional on the backing vocals
Nithya: It’s a note lesser than the original. Wish I could reach that high !! LOL
Sindhuja, Narayanan & Murali: Thanks for the pointers on the swarams. I sure shall keep that in mind for other semi classicals in the future.

Very nicely done, except for a few minor swaras and some mixing that could have been better, as already pointed out by many people.
I really enjoyed your voice and improvisations with sangathis, although at places (towards the end with the swaras) I felt that the singing style was kind of discrete and it would have been even better if you sang with more continuity/flow.
Excellent voice! Keep it up!

WOW !! was the first thing that struck me :)
As many people voiced, I like this version more than the original for the sweetness and softness you have offered here…. but the swarams need not have been subtle, is what I feel….
A very very enjoyable presentation :D

Thank you. Excellent cover.
I enjoyed your version a tad low on the scale by design. You pulled it off. Congrats!
I disagree with Nityas comment.
Director Shankar and ARR didnt mean for the song to be soft. The song was not meant to put a 3 year old to sleep. If you recall the scene, the twins try to outwit the hero(fast paced etc).

Hey Meera,
I dont know where you are from and whether you do this as a profession or what so ever.
My name is Prathadsan and I am a singer myself, and got to listen to your track by accident.
I have to say, you have done a reaaally good job. As you said, the softness in Nithyashree was definetely missing, and you have brought that into your version. Well done for that.
If you do not mind, please contact me on
prathadsan@live.co.uk and we could potentially work on a song together in future.
