Kannalanae (cover version) from Bombay
Kannalanae (cover version) ... Lyrics & Chords
My dad completes 74 years on 26th of April. My love for music is definitely partly from him. He is very loyal to C.Ramachandra, the VR combo, G.Ramanathan, Ilayaraaja amongst a notable few. But somehow along the way, think he froze in time…… ARR is not someone he really acknowledges, so this is yet another attempt of mine to make him see that ARR can rock too :)
Best wishes on your birthday Appa, hope you have many more healthy birthdays to come!
A song that has been suggested/requested by many in and out of Muziboo. My apologies, but don’t really remember who all requested it, and this goes out to all of you. However, I do remember the person who requested it last……Raj :)
Monster of a song by Chitra, and just an absolutely beautiful melody by ARR. Somehow I always envisioned this as an emotional roller coaster, thanks to each line showing a conflicting emotion. Hope you all enjoy this.
Movie: Bombay

Ahhhhhhh!!!!!! Ithu over mirattal… Appa kku ARR ah pidikka vaikkanumnu paadina maathiri irukku… :) Happy B’day to appa… As said, a monster of a song by KSC… Your version sounded different and fresh… Open and bold voice of yours projected this song as you actually wanted… So you have succeeded in that aspect… On my first listen, I felt something odd- must be the lags at few places… On subsequent listens, those did sit well as I thought those were intentional… Emoting – that was the only area I’d been asking you to work on… In this version, you have done a very good job with the emotions and this is such a dreadful song that everything should be in proportion and tandem; overdoing anything would spoil the show… At times, your emotions were overflowing but as I listened a few times to recheck my observation it went well with the open-throated singing of yours… Glad that you have come out covering run-of-the-mill songs and started testing your abilities… Kindly note, ‘KaNNai’ was pronounced as ‘KaNai’ towards the end of the song… Way to go!!
Thanks,
♫ ♫ RAJ ♫ ♫

So expressive, and creative in your own style, Meera! Surely, you haven’t kept any of your Mama’s sangathis in your mind, you belted them out…. Want to cover the Hindi version some day.
Loved it,
Sudha

My birthday wishes to your dad! !Very good attempt, Meera! But I am generally very critical about this song since it is very dear to me. The best part of it are the sangathis delivered impeccably by Chithra and the uncompromising feel. I did enjoy most parts but would have liked a tad more softness and elegance in the brigaas. Kudos on the choice of song- not at all an easy one, says experience! :)

Hi Meera….
Happy Birthday to your dad…….All my prayers are there for him to live long with good health….
A big clap for the song selection….Such a beautiful song & Chithra madam had rendered the same as easy as plucking a flower from her garden……Since 1995 , this song is the personal pain of all music lovers………
According to me , it’s very nice performance with apt feel & expressions…….I have seen the comment of Adhithiji above……Myself seems to be helpless as things are much higher for people above than our level of music….I liked the way she noted “says experience” ! That’s how top people are marking things….For me , this is a fantastic performance with your amazing voice clarity & flawless sangathis…….You were very careful through out the show………Fantastic
All the very best & goes to my fav….

Happy birthday to your appa Meera. Liked the track and your singing with those improvs. I felt that the kannalane… en kaNgalai… would have sounded beautiful if it was like in the original (prolonged). (I know that you sing in your own style but I hope you wouldn’t mind if I shared my thoughts) Clear pronunciation. Loved it. All the sangathis have come out well – liked En kangalai… towards the end – tough one.

Meera,
Liked your open throated singing in this one – cryslal clear vocals. Beautifully sung with loads of feel and nice improvs. Felt that the pause after Kannalane and En Kangalai could have been avoided, thought it hindered the flow a bit. These are nitpiks ofcourse. Liked your intepretation of this classic.

@Kumar- with regards to that first kannalane and En kangalai, I didn’t want to be repeating the same thing time and again though the song— so decided to mix it up… More importantly, the interpretation I had in my head for those words were one of pain (contrary to the sweet expression that manisha actually depicts in the movie), and felt those few short endings brought it out better. The lyrics depicts one of a frustrated soul according to me, so guess I did take a big risk there, esp., with this being considered an anthem of sorts from KSC’s stable. However all that said, pointers taken :) Thank you!
@Harshan- thank you, wish your father a wonderful birthday as well :)
Cheers,
Meera

Like your Father, I am also not a great admirer of ARR…. But I love some of his compositions…. This is one of my favourites……
There is no doubt that you have done a superb work here.Your voice is with full of life in it. You can do justice for any type of song.
In this one, there are too many pauses…. Pauses in the sense that you have taken time in expressing the emotions (ofcourse, without affecting the rhythm). In my opinion, it would have been still better if you have done it occasionally. In Tamil, as the saying goes ‘alavirkku minjinaal amirdhamum nanju’, too much of improvisations also gives a dragging effect to the song. I hope you will not mistake me……
All the best….
VINO….
