Gems of Ilayaraaja- Kaadhal Oviyam ( Cover version) with Narayanan Raju
Gems of Ilayaraaja- Kaadhal... Lyrics & Chords
Glad to introduce Narayanan in his first duet on Muziboo, although we have done a duet almost 8/9 months ago on both our personal blogs.
Narayanan sings with a local Telugu band “Aavakkai” and is blessed with a expression laden soft voice. Thanks Narayanan for doing this :)
This song is probably one that will be remembered by me for years and will be for years to come. Couple of reasons for that. My debut on stage with Thillana, a local bay area light music group happened with this number. Have performed this number way back in college quite a few times that my band in college decided we will not perform this anymore LOL
The most beautiful part of this song are the harmonies, moreso than the main female lead :)) Have done the main female lead and the backing harmonies through the song. For once the track didn’t have backing vocals and I was thrilled to see that actually.
This song was requested by Subbu from Muziboo. So, thanks Subbu and this song goes out to you. Hope all you guys enjoy listening to this interpretation from us.
Movie:Alaigal oyvadhillai
Original music by : Ilayaraaja
Originally sung by: IL & Jency
Cover version by: Narayanan Raju & Meera Manohar
Backing female harmonies: Meera Manohar
Backing slogam: Narayanan Raju
Mixed by: yours truly :)
Thanks for listening and wishing one and all a very happy Tamizh New Year and Vishu!!
Have fun

Meera, I’m glad to be the first one here, but not the best one, of course :). A nice melody and well done by you as usual. Do u know anything more about the singer Jency? Just curious……

Hmm I know this song this is one of my favs. Maatey Manthramo from Seethakokachiluka in Telugu.
Meera and Narayanan,
You both have sung this really well, I was expecting S.P. Balu kind of a voice, but figured out that it was sung by Ilayaraja in Tamil. Mixing/feel/emotions everything is right in this song. Keep up the good work guys.

Ashraf— thanks for the comment. Jency, known to me was IL’s staple singer for a very very long time. Although some say that she’s just an average singer ( which I do tend to agree on), her voice has lent a lot of beauty to some of IL’s soulful compositions. En vaanile, kaadhal oviyam, deiveega raagam et al.
Anu— yes, I have done that on my blog way way back, maybe a zillion years ago. However, it was not upto the mark then. Will redo it sometime soon. Thanks for the comment and the the request.
Dhiraj— hey… I was waiting for you to comment on this one :) I am glad you liked this one Dhiraj. Thanks for listening

Meera – You have started to sound very professional. Keep it up.
I also think it is time for most of the senior singers including you to challenge yourselves from not being just karaoke singers. What I would like to hear is not just a lame repetition of the same film song, but a completely different version of the song. Obviously, you don’t have the facility to change the arrangements to your liking, but atleast you should try to sing the same notes in a different style. I’m not talking about subtle changes here and there, but modifications on the existing melody.
Initially keep the same pallavi, atleast try changing the charanams. It is going to be a little challenging and the results are not going to be everyone’s liking, but the listeners will have something new to listen to. Think about it. You all being exceptionally talented I’m sure it will come good.

Ashraf – Looks like Jency is a music teacher at a school in Kerala. I always wondered how she got into film music, from like out of the blue. It seems her brother is guitarist who works in the same field. Not sure whether he was in IR’s team, but nevertheless that is the connection. Speaking of filmdom to teaching, Jerry Amaldev also works as a music teacher at a school in Kerala.

Good one:)
Meera, Lovely track. Great Job. Loved the harmonies.
Narayanan, Great beginning. Your interpretation was quiet different frm the original, nevertheless good. Still I missed some nuances in places like ‘Mogam theerave’. Sounded like Surendar’s version to me.
Cheers:)

Good job guyz… Narayanan- do you have any solos here in Muziboo?
Murali Venkatraman said
Very Good job on harmonies and shlokam.
===
Narayana :
It appears like you have converted some of the gamakams into sangathis in some places or may be I don’t remember all the nuances of the original.
ThedinEn oh…en jeevanE -
1. I think the Ohs have more gamakam than sangthis
2. thEdinen – There is more curve at the end of “En”
Mogam theeravE – theeravE seekkirama theerndhu pOchu :-) a little more sustenance is welcome.
And why inhibit yourself ? Be vocal when you are singing (pun intended).
===
Meera:
There is more nasality in your tone than in the earlier blogging days. Are you constraining your voice ? If you do that, it will start shrinking.
Meera Manohar
said
Thanks all for your comments.
Murali: Did this in March beginning, right out of laryngitis. So the nasality is my guess. You wouldn’t have found this problem ( I sincerely hope you didn’t ;-) in Maargazhi poovae or in aaja nachle, where my voice is almost my usual self. Unfortunately, this was in the throes of laryngit-omania :))
Thanks for commenting, Will keep the nasality in mind since I do know that always can creep into my renditions.

Outstanding rendition….and Meera thanks a ton for taking the request.
one of first songs I learnt guitar rhythm for (thanks to Kishmu)and the highlight of this song is use of Maj7th and minor6th chords in the charanam. The line thaedinaen…….has DM7, where in the raise in pitch to naen……reaches the flatted seventh note and stays there w/o touching the 7th actually, creating a beautiful tension, precisely done by IR……Meera felt you have done it exactly like in Thaangumo……felt Narayana has done it like a dominant 7th by reaching the 7th note straight. That said it sounded nice too.Just loved the Pallavi as rendered by Narayana
over all enjoyed it to the core.
Regards,
Subbu.

Meera and Narayanan,
Excellent job! I have listened to this song atleast 10-15 times continuously!
Murali captured all the comments I had in mind. Narayana’s rendition was falling short on few gamakams, especially the “Mogum….” part in the second charanam.
I loved the veda ucchaarana and harmonies following.
Meera, looking forward to singing this song with you :) Loved your voice!

Excellent you guys!!! Great job. Loved it!! The track is excellent (no noise at all). Good job who ever found it.
Meera: Your voice is sounding a lot different in this song (in a good way)!! Does Jency’s voice sound that way in the song. I did not listen to the Tamil version ever.
Narayanan: +’s: Superb dude!! Just loved your voice and expressions. Very suitable for this song. I know this song rendered by SPB. so you matched him.
Question: In the slokam…Your "Sa"thendriya
sounded a little different. is it right or did you mis pronounce it?
-‘s: agree with Murali’s observation. People have already pointed it out.
Excellent job you both. You both HAVE TO do more duets.
Check out my first song here
Please do comment. They help me encourage and improve.

Excellent work, Meera & Narayanan. Both of you sound so good and in perfect sync. I don’t understand the language but one thing I do understand is that you guys are totally in sur, laay and taal, etc. It sounds so sweet. Congrats, guys……

Vamsi,
I agree with your comments on the Veda uccharana. I noticed that too. may be we can ask Nari later. :)

This song is one of the trickiest one from Ilayaraja and is driven entirely by the music in that the lay-ins depend on the interlude and background music for support. Considering that you guys did an excellent job even with a bad track.
I particularly liked Meera’s voice and Narayana’s expression. Difficult song but you guys pulled it off. Commendable job.
Again, dont let the comments that compare your rendition to the original affect you. You guys made this song your own with your rendition and your own “andaaz” – a mark of a good singer.

Meera, very well sung. Pleasing meera but having heard to your newest works, this one has a little scope :P …… The ending notes cud ve been free flowing.
Gency’s voice suits well on these dream songs & situations, her range being very good. IR never tried her in these real challenging numbers maybe she was a little underused ? maybe !
Smooth male vocals, could ve been a little crisp. Good singing.

One of the evergreen love songs of Tamil flim. IR & Jency were too good in this song.
You two have done really well. Thanks for bringing this number. Thanks to
Subbu as well. Subbu was bang on this observation. He is a big fan of IR, it will be nice and intersting to listen to him talking about IR and his compositions. Too much of an information… very modest as well.
Liked it. Looking forward to more such numbers from you…Meera…
